He opens the handkerchief and holds out what it contains, visibly nervous.

"I hope that black market vendor didn’t just sell me a regular onion, pretending it was some rare specimen," he says, almost ashamed.

He’s examined the bulb from every angle. Weighed it, pressed it, brushed it with his fingertips, sniffed it. The smooth surface, the faintly pungent smell... Everything about it screams "onion". But he wanted to believe otherwise.

Evelyne doesn’t move. She stays silent. Far too long for his liking.

The silence is unbearable! Nothing in his young life has prepared him for the anxiety of a prolonged silence after giving a gift he’s not even sure of. His stomach tightens.

"By Merlin’s beard!"

He jumps.

"It’s a Mirror Narcissus bulb!" Evelyne exclaims, her voice overflowing with pure, almost childlike joy as she cradles the bulb with infinite care. "Where on earth did you find such a marvel?"

He shrugs, feigning nonchalance, though his heart is pounding far too fast to be convincing. And she’s so genuinely thrilled that he wishes he could bottle that joy and sip it by the spoonful on days when everything goes wrong.

Suddenly, he feels the mattress shift as a weight lifts away.

"I’m going to plant it right now!" she announces, already on her feet, the quick rhythm of her bare steps echoing across the cold stone floor.

He frowns. "Seriously? You’re going to garden barefoot, in your nightgown, like some lunatic escaped from St. Mungo’s? It’s past eleven o’clock, Evelyne!"
