Can I hijack anon's post and ask about slash instead?
i like angst, werewolves, or anything magical really except those uhh seelie court type settings (don't get them, am too afraid to ask at this point).
i also like mysteries, whodunits, that kinda thing. truly i just want like, a book that will please me like the big bad wolf series by charlie adhara (specially the first book, so good) did and preferably something that either doesn't have a big fandom or has a fandom that isn't annoying (this disqualifies the raven circle or whatever it was called even tho i liked those books)
So this might be a stupid question, or at least stupidly broad, but: does anyone here have suggestions on how to find good, published romance these days, or how to find good recs? I want to get back into reading published fiction, and romance seems like a good starting point after many years of almost exclusively reading fic. But the genre is just so huge (obviously), and the buzzwordy marketing is so off-putting, and all the cover art looks the same, and everything seems to be marketed to people who already read a lot in this genre and know exactly what they like, and the Booktok of it all...I'm so lost. I keep looking at bestseller lists, reading free first chapters and quitting because nothing grabs me. Help?
--
Uh... well... I'm assuming you want het. That's a very, very, very large publishing category, especially if you aren't just looking at recent releases. Do you have any preferences? Like, any at all? Contemporary? She's a P.I.; he's a werewolf? Norman/Saxon forbidden love?
#i just need to find a prolific reader with my exact taste and then look over their shoulder to see what to read clearly#i found out what speculative fiction means the other day#turns out i'm a fan of that!

The hidden search operators cheatsheet! Most people have heard of "otp: true" by now, but there's plenty of other fun things to try in there
I wish AO3 had a filter for number of Chapters. Word count is great and all but I just can't read one chapter that's 17k (or more!) words long. I need it broken up into chapters.
First and foremost, its easier to keep track of my place. I need to take breaks while reading, if I have to leave the page open it drains the power on my phone, but if I close the browser I lose my place and have to scroll through half the fic to find it again. Its so frustrating I'd rather just quit the fic.
Secondly, it makes it easier to keep track of what's happened. Especially if it is a long fic that the reader has to take frequent breaks (or go to sleep/work/school/etc.). Breaking it up into chapters helps readers find sections in case they need to go back and reread something before they can continue.
Anyway, I don't even click on fics that are just one chapter (I refuse to call them one-shots) that should be multi-chapter fics. You could have written the next Lord of the Rings for all I care. You fic won't get read.
I wish I could filter them out of my searches so I don't even have to see them.

Anon...
First, get an ebook reader.
Second, the syntax for chapters is:
expected_number_of_chapters: 1
expected_number_of_chapters: >1
-expected_number_of_chapters: 1
etc.
#is it called the hidden cheatsheet because it's fucking impossible to find? yes#i don't know#probably#ao3

Thank you for the rec!! I actually checked out The Librarians 'cos someone mentioned it in that OTN post and I'm- not entirely sold on the acting so I shall see if this one is my style.
Hopefully I don't need any Leverage knowledge though, I never finished that show
#though maybe I should see if I find a way of watching it#I wasn't able to back in the day and remember being pissed cos the show was fun

oh god SAME!!
if you have any recs i'm here for literally any fandom and ship. been having a horrible time finding new things to read that hit me right
The crux of the top/bottom issue is that people still perceive bottoming as inherently submissive, degrading thing, which is why always always it is about who bottoms and whose characterization it is more suitable for "bottoming."
"He's not a guy who will bottom" says someone. Please, tell me, who is the type of guy who will bottom? I'm so curious!

I love characters who have a whole stupid Thing about it and then, oh noes, turn out to love it.
#used to be that people tagged these with 'internalized homophobia'#but i haven't gone looking in ages for unrelated squick reasons 😭

does anyone else feel extremely mediocre and talentless it’s like you’re okay at some stuff but not good enough to ever truly succeed or make it into a career, not naturally gifted at anything nor motivated enough, and will never be recognised or special or exceptional in any way to anyone
