This is my main blog, so there's a little bit of most things that interest me. (My book blog is over here.) Full disclosure: I'm a white woman who is probably too old for this.Header from Gibfoto's picture of a Geminid meteor and the northern lights.

P. took one of my Odyssey copies down from its shelf to look at the dust jacket.
“Mama can count the letters!” (“There are fifteen letters in the title and author of this book. Well, It’s a little funny to call Homer the author. ‘Homer’ is just the name we give to the people and things that happened to make these stories. It’s not like there was one guy who wrote down, ‘Sing, Muse, the wrath of…’ Mama’s getting off topic.”)
“Mama can count the kids!” (“One, two, three. There are three women.”)
“Mama can count the water!” (We counted the peaks in the wave scroll at the bottom for that one.)
He started wiggling a flap on the dust jacket in his excitement. I reminded him to be gentle with books and added, “Mama would like to read this sometime.”
“Mama can read it,” he replied, pressing it into my hands.
So I showed him the maps (“Earth! The water is deep.”) and the little owl illustration at the beginning of Book I. I read the first couple stanzas, but he wanted to go back to the “owl page” when I tried to keep going.

Saw this while running errands a couple weeks ago. Didn’t realize it was a movie tie-in promotion until I got home. Just a wild statement to see out of context.
#it’s the kind of thing that fits in an urban fantasy setting#or as part of a goofy Smile Burger-based side quest in Kamurochō or Downtown Ryukyu#burger king#Putting this back because I regretted deleting this silly post

If Hadestown has a moral, she says, then it’s “you have to try, you have to have hope, not because success is a given – it’s not. Orpheus fails. We heroicise” – here she breaks off to apologise that jet lag has led to her making up words – “we heroicise Orpheus not because he succeeds but because he tries, and that endeavour alone is worthwhile. How to live, and not merely survive, is to believe things could change.”
Anaïs Mitchell on her musical Hadestown: 'I worked on it so long I was afraid I'd never make another record'

Books on Libby have started disappearing.
My friend pointed it out first, and then I started noticing too. Why would books that multiple libraries definitely, 100% had digital access to a couple of months/weeks/days ago disappear?
Amazon is getting exclusive rights to them.
Ebooks that the public library once had digital copies of are now only available through Amazon. Audible boasts on their covers about Audible-exclusive audiobooks that did not used to be Audible-exclusive. Entire series and collections are disappearing overnight.
Keep your eyes on the privatization of media and your libraries.
