About the NFT The piece I created for Hendricks Gin is called “Persephone” and is about the loss of loved ones to the pandemic. Persephone is a symbol of hope after a hard winter, being the Goddess of spring and new growth. The promise that spring and growth will return and that all seasons have cycles is central to the myth.

The story of Persephone has always intrigued me as she took what was forced upon her and made the underworld itself into a heaven for the blessed-on Earth. Her story is one of empowerment and making the best of a bad situation. The very concept of making a hell into a home was created by Persephone and instead of waiting to be rescued by some hapless hero, she turned hell itself into a heaven by sheer will and determination. In this piece the Goddess of the underworld is awaiting the arrival of those coming to the underground station of Elysian Fields. The realm of Elysium is the part of Underworld reserved for the Blessed and the Heroic and Good. The helmet or mask of thorns is a sign of protection from harm.

Persephone is sometimes depicted as the ruler of the underworld and sometimes as the wife of Hades but it’s obvious in any version of the myth of who was really in charge. Persephone, who was known for her gentle kindness, had Hades on bended knee and had him create light and hope in the land of darkness and death by simply having a vision of kindness. Poor Hades …he simply had no idea of what he was getting himself into when he brought light, love and hope and kindness into his dark realm.

As part of our Winter group show titled 🖤For All We Know There Was, And All There Ever Be🖤 opens featuring George Cho, @selenawong.fineart and @adam_wallacavage inquire for a full VIP pdf now available✨ @galleryhouse_belinda featuring a number of new works virtual tour to be released soon of @raycaesar1111 depicted here ”Sirens of Cythera” digital ultrachrome on panel with varnish measuring 30 x 40” image size one of a kind. ⠀ I have always been fascinated with paintings related to Cythera, by the French painter Jean-Antoine Watteau; the Embarkation for Cythera, the Pilgrimage to Cythera, and Les Deux Cousines.  In the ancient world, Cythera, one of the Greek islands, was thought to be the birthplace of Venus, goddess of love.  The subject of Cythera may have been inspired to Watteau by certain 17th century operas or plays.  In Florent Carton Dancourt's Les Trois Cousines (The Three Cousins), a girl dressed as a pilgrim steps out from the chorus line and invites the audience to join her on a voyage to the island, where everyone will meet their ideal partner.  I suppose in uncertain times I feel a call to those Arcadian places of peace and serenity, and it's worth noting that some aspects of the models and figures in this piece were created in virtual reality using Oculus Quest 2, which is a first for me. One of my many imagined anxieties is a form of agoraphobia, the fear of the outside world, and in my case, an overwhelming astonishment of how huge the sky is above my head. This compounded by my certain suspicious nature that gravity may prove to be a theory that is in fact unproven and fallible.  Each day I force myself to put on my coat and shoes and hitch up my little rat terrier "Finnegan" in his vestments and venture out for what I call "My Daily Constitutional". I think I first heard the term in the 1960s comedic movie " The World of Henry Orient" with Peter Sellers.  As I have now watched that film hundreds of times as it reminds me of my childhood steeped in a dissociative world of my own making. This one featured is titled “The Quiet Room” Measuring 36 x 50” digital ultra chrome on archival paper edition of 5— The Quiet Room is about rumination and dissociative aspects of my personality. It is a response to all those voices in my head speaking at once and my ongoing struggle to unify those fractured elements of my subconscious reality. She is claiming all the chairs in the room and learning to think as an individual, as it is her territory in a realm of her own time and space. The Quiet room was also a revered place during the years I worked at theHospital For Sick Children in Toronto. This was the sacred room where parents took their last view of a deceased child. I passed this room every night as I left the hospital and it was anything but quiet. I always imagined an Angel sitting quietly in wait to take those children to the next world.
