About the so-called "unanswered questions."

MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD.

Any lingering (important) questions that had to do with the main story were answered.

The entire show was about how Red and Liz are connected and how Red fits into her past.

ELIZABETH KEEN:

Throughout the show, viewers got a glimpse of Liz's entire life through flashback episodes. From the moment she was born until her death. We saw all the people who were a part of her life.

We were shown how she was conceived (Requiem). The story of her mother and her father was explained. We saw baby Liz at around age 1 when Mr. Kaplan was hired as her nanny and cleaner. Mr. Kaplan continued to be her nanny until around the age of four. At that point, Mr. Kaplan gave Liz to Sam to raise as Katarina instructed her to do. Sam has raised her for nearly 30 years. We then see Liz in the pilot and are told some of the milestones in those 30 years. We then see Liz for the next 8 years until she dies. Her story was told in full.

RED:

Red was Katarina, Liz's mother, the whole time. We also saw Katarina's entire life story. We hear Red tell Liz in his last meal speech about when he was a child. We then see a very young Katarina, a young adult Katarina in Nachalo. We see all the people who were a part of her life. Every single flashback episode in the show had KATARINA ROSTOVA in it. Because Red was Katarina, and they needed to tell his story. Red's story included the past, present, and the future, until finally his story ends too.

Frankly the only thing I wanted was to see a flashback scene of Carla Reddington/Naomi Hyland and Katarina Rostova coming to their "agreement" that Carla would never say anything about Red and Liz.

People ask, "Why couldn’t Red just tell Liz the truth at the end? If she knew the truth, then she wouldn't have had to go on this whole rampage that got her killed."

Red couldn't tell her because the show was always saving the revelation of who Red is until the very end. Because Liz needed to find this out herself. It was her journey. I do not doubt that Jon Bokenkamp always planned for Liz to be the one who made the revelation. Red wouldn't be able to outsmart her for this one. Check. She figured out who he was right before she died.

In episode 8.03, Red tried to "explain" to Liz why he killed her "mother," and that what she saw is not what it seems. (She's not Liz's mother.) Liz could not take Red up on his offer because that would've ruined (storytelling-wise) Liz's final arc of finally becoming a full-blown criminal, as Red and the show have been saying since the pilot.

What kept the show going was the cat-and-mouse chase. Red has a secret, and Liz tries to unravel it. If the secret is known, then there is nothing more to talk about because the mystery was the entire plot of the show.

Megan Boone had announced she was leaving before season 8, so it was fitting that the show dedicated the last season entirely to her. Though I am saddened that she was killed off. I don't think that was ever the intent.

In Liz's final arc, she would finally embrace and LEAN INTO her dark impulses. All she needed was one final push (Red killing Fakerina). That's why even though people hate Season 7 and the Fakerina plot... It was necessary because it would drive Season 8. It also pushed the mythology plot forward.

Liz: [ Voice-over ] It’s strange. I was afraid earlier of that darkness I was telling you about. I’ve always feared it. Ever since Reddington entered my life, I’ve worried that his darkness might somehow overtake me, that it might just swallow me whole. [ Liz emerges through a door onto the roof of the building ] Liz: But now that I’m here, I’m not afraid. In fact, I embrace this part of me and wherever it takes us on our way to the truth. You and me and Reddington, I’m at peace with that. I embrace that. I consider it my destiny. [ Liz goes to a ledge overlooking the darkened city. She puts one leg up on the ledge ] [ The Rolling Stones’ ♪ “Painted Black” plays ] [ Liz makes a call ] [ Cellphone beeps, dialing ] [ Line rings ] Liz: Mother, it’s me. I’m ready. [ Liz stands majestically looking over the city, her hair and coat blown by the wind ]

Megan knocked it out of the park in Season 8. All of her performances were good, but Season 8, she went above and beyond IMHO. Also, the writers knocked it out of the park, tying the entire story together like the amazing writers that they are!!! 👏👏👏
