Let's be real, Noragami is a rare gem.
can I just fangirl for a moment and gush over how Noragami is such an impressive manga?
Point A ) I’ve never seen a manga that has it’s magic rules established and followed like Noragami has. The concept of a Shinki ‘stabbing’ his master due to sin is such a brilliant idea and is used in interesting ways for conflict. This concept was a really nice way to establish how the Gods have a weak point and it allows the authors the benefit of not having their characters too powerful. It’s even more impressive that their weak points come from their means of protection, their weapons.I really appreciate that there’s a limit to the God’s powers and they haven’t tried to bend the rules that they have set up.
Let’s be real, how many mangas have this much thought in their world building?
Point B) This comes from an artist’s perspective but I REALLY LOVE how the Manga is so easy to read. THE FLOW is so fucking amazing, not once did I have a hard time reading this thing. YOU DON’T KNOW HOW MANY MANGAS LACK THIS TRAIT.
Tumblr media
Have you ever paused for a moment in a manga and said “ What just happened?“
Yep. Many popular mangas suffer from a lack of flow in it’s pages. Tokyo Ghoul. Shingeki No Kyojin.Ao no Exorcist. All of these I love dearly but I can’t count the times I had to reread the pages just because I didn’t know where to look.
which leads me to my next point…
Point C) I can really tell that the mangakas are cultured badass artists just from the art and composition of it all.
Tumblr media
you see this motherfuckers?  I love how the light tells me exactly where to look. These mangakas don’t just draw these panels because they look cool, they draw them with a purpose and intention to make you look there. In addition, not once have I ever felt that they were limited by their style of choice. Just by looking at the pages, I knew they mastered their foundations and not once were they held down by their skill. How do I know this? I have never seen a page where a character was off model. When I see Hiyori I never mistake her for any other female character. When I see Yato, there’s not other character that looks like him. This is why I appreciate the manga so much, the characters are distinct from each other.
Point D) THE FORESHADOWING. DEAR GOD, THE FORESHADOWING.AND BY FORESHADOWING, I mean the way they revealed who Yato’s dad was so fucking impressive. The Foreshadowing was so amazing that when I went back and thought about it, all his actions synced to him hiding an identity/ having ulterior motives (e.g. suddenly transferring during his senior year, kissing Hiyori)
what’s so great about it was that I NEVER saw it coming and the reveal was all the more powerful. This whole plot twist deserves a slow clap.
-slow clap-
CONCLUSION : For a really long time, after I grew out of my weaboo stage, I really thought mangas were juvenile. But reading Noragami slapped me right back from that mentality and proved my wrong by displaying that a manga can have as much solid storytelling as any story. I’m going to go as far as to say that Noragami beats alot of western fantasy novels and comics in world building. YOU GO NORAGAMI.
YOU FUCKING GO.

My main problem as a writer is that I don’t write because “I have a story to tell”. I write because there are worlds I want to visit, ideas I want to explore, people I want to meet, conversations I want to hear, emotions that I want to express, and impossibilities I want to make real.
Which means that I still need a fucking plot.
