It's Aya's notebook, filled to the brin with the gods know how many gossips and notes and whatever. You should bring it back to her. Or at least pick it up.

Maybe add a little comment or two or rip out a few pages.

He reveals his wound, and Reimu found herself gasping, the free hand reaching her mouth. It was rare for her to see those kind of slashes, to be honest. Rarely someone engaged in hand to hand combat ever since she introduced danmaku to the locals, rarely humans live to tell the tales of deadly battles such as that one.

The shrine maiden tensed up, her eyes forcibly moving away from the gash to his eyes, his body, bloody and bruised, tense in return as if he expected to keep on fighting.

Maybe, she should. She rarely showed mercy to youkais who ended up shedding blood, but--

"…you never gave me a reason to not believe you."

She wasn't a good shrine maiden tho, right? Barely is, even during incidents. Looking around to make sure nobody would come she rushed forward, trying to cover him as much as he could, before stopping and muttering a quick blessing under her breath.

"The shinigami could be here at any second, she'll take care of any corpse", Reimu explained, practically pushing him "Move. The shrine isn't far away, but we can't let anyone see you."

It's clear he anticipated no less from an encounter like this. But, there's no better way to show her why he took such action then to show her what lead to the altercation in the first place.

Cape cast aside, he turned his back to reveal a deep slash consistent with that sword's blade just below the middle of where his shoulder blades would meet. It's clear that, from where the wound was on his person, they intended to aim higher. Closer to the back of his neck.

"This isn't the sort of wound you acquire by being fully aware of someone's presence, let alone their intent." Given the shape of it, and the angle of the cut being impossible to deliver by means of self infliction, there's a strong case that the other party initiated.

"But I suppose you need to ask yourself this; when someone takes advantage of your focus on another task, uses that as an opportunity to harm you, continues to fight even after you've made it clear you're not interested..." A lot of explanation, to build up to this exact point.

"Do they deserve what the outcome turns out to be?"

He doesn't expect her to believe him, or even care. That's why preemptively, he's focused his sight forward. Breathing steady, emptying his head for whatever will come next.

He's nice. Most of the time, he's nice. A certified bear, however: a little bit grumbly, a little bit rude, a little bit distant, at least according to you. But he's not bad.

As long as he acts nice, you'll act nice in return!

That's Hatate's... thing. Phone, right? A weirdly-shaped camera, as far as you know. It's weird that it's there, in front of your Shrine, rather than with Hatate herself.

Well, leaving it on the floor just isn't right! You decide to pick it up and bring it inside, ready to give it back if she'll ever come to ask for it. Needless to say, you didn't notice that the camera was not only on, but indeed recording.

Better not do anything weird for a while, Reimu!

He didn't answer, did he? Reimu held her breath, the grip on her purification rod tightening as she stepped closer.

She would love to say yes right away. To say she understood, that she knew him, that he wouldn't jump at someone's throat unprompted.

"I don't think I can, right now."

There's gentleness and firmness alike in her tone. Less of Reimu, more of the Hakurei Shrine Maiden.

"It all depends on what happened before, really. I hope you understand I can't just let this slide."

Whatever transpired here was obviously not an ideal outcome for anyone involved. Crimson spattered him, a gaze that clearly showed distaste with the situation saying most of what needed to be said.

"I didn't want to do it at all. I'm more interested in helping outsiders than harming them." He spoke, in a more moderately defeated tone.

"Even if they hardly pose a threat to me, I can't know that for sure until it ends up being too late." Judging by the presence of old swords, there was indeed a story to be told there. There was an attack initiated by someone that triggered this issue.

"..Surely you understand?"

He seemed to be dodging if it was something deserved, based more on the aspect of "what else could be done?".

Yessss. Bingo. We're winning at gifts, which is a normal thing to want to win.

"Thank you!", Reimu hastly gave a bow, her hands now free from the heavy bottle held close into a quick prayer she muttered under her breath before she followed the fellow shrine maiden, eyes wide as she kept looking around, studying any little detail and unnecessarily incredible detail all around her.

"Is it really that easy to speak to her? I'd hate to skip a queue or something..."

Right now there didn't seem to be many people at the shrine, at least. Maybe it was too early for that.

"How... is she, exactly? I met a handful of goddesses in the past, and most were--

Positively aggressive."

Most of the times because she met them after shooting her way through. Usually for more than understandable reasons.

"Ah, well I don't tend to drink a lot, just a little here and there. Lady Inari does love her sake, though~." She nodded and took the offered sake.

"Well, you went and brought a gift and everything, why don't you come inside? You can meet the goddess too while you're here~." She suggested with a pleasant smile. Despite Reimu's awkwardness, Izumi was going on like nothing was wrong. Most likely she just didn't feel any of the awkwardness Reimu was feeling.

It's the new shrine maiden and her shrine. Well, new for you, at least. The reminder that you still have to catch up makes you feel small.

The shrine makes you feel smaller.

You can't help but wonder if this sense of inferiority comes from how grandiose this place - she is, or something much sinister. For the time being, we're going to think about the former option.

She said that as a bad joke, but the statement couldn't be more true. Reimu was used to her Shrine being… traditional, let's say traditional. Simple. A fancy way to say it was small and old-- But even when it came to others, even down to those even less extravagant as her own such as Byakuren's, she always felt more or less as if she was still in the game. That a Shrine could be big or small, hers still stood out in its own way.

This one just made her feel like a loser. Positively uncomfrotable in its magnificence, enough to lose a good few seconds staring before answering.

"Erm, wellll. I figured I could return the favor and actually say hello?"

Awkward. She may not have a batch of freshly wished cookies on her, so… hopefully the good aged bottle of Oni sake she brought could still be a proper welcome gift?

"I didn't know if you drink, but.. it's quite good!

As long as you don't exaggerate. Hangover with this is… weird."

“Wait, wait. A THIRD shrine maiden?! The only ones I know of are you and Sanae. But if they’re also Shinto… that’s probably another of the… uh… 8 million gods that’s part of it. Or at least that’s what I found in one of Kosuzu’s normal books.”

She’s torn. On one hand she wants to show Reimu the mountain she found herself. On the other, she wants to see who this ‘other shrine maiden’ is so things might get less heated when the two inevitably start fighting over something ridiculous as- say- an eviction notice. Wasn’t that what got her and Reimu to fight multiple gods, half of Youkai Mountain, and Sanae herself, and win?

“If everyone in this square’s all in the same religion, can’t y’all just talk this stuff over so something important doesn’t explode because someone else acted up? Heck, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a FOURTH shrine maiden on this mountain! Someone who represents a god of… uh… education and onsen! I’ll trail you wherever you go on this, since this religious stuff’s more your turf since that incident with Kokoro a while back.”

Here's hoping not all of them decide to go live there! The competition was already rough enough, with the newcomer being able to make wish come true willynilly and. Likely think much lesser of her after she admitted she didn't know which god Reimu served.

That was rather awkward, all things considered. Especially since right now, if not for some occasional friendly competition, everyone is chilling in their corner. But if yet another shrine maiden came and ruined the balance they all worked so hard to achieve...

"All right! I made up my mind! To the mountain we go... and if we find another shrine maiden, or god, or whatever, well.

We shoot on sight!"

"Hm, I see--" Reimu started commenting, and right when she started to wonder when this lady Inari actually showed up, she was given a proper presentation of the goddess powers.

"-woah!"

And what power these are! Blinking and taking the place, muttering a quick thank as she took a bite… she was pleasantly surprised of the taste! Great cookies, seemingly as warm as if they were just made!

"…yeah, I'll totally have to pay your shrine a visit!"

Oh how easily she could be persuaded!

"Ah, well I was actually from the human village to begin with...Lady Inari just chose me as her shrine maiden." She explained.

"Well, before I go back...Here, have this as a gift~. I just thought I should come greet you since you're my senior as a shrine maiden." She manifested a plate of cookies into her hand, offering it to Reimu. By channeling some of Inari's power, just creating objects on the spot like this was possible.
