a quick psa to anyone recently getting into greek mythology and is a victim of tumblr and/or tiktok misconceptions:

-there is no shame in being introduced to mytholgy from something like percy jackson, epic the musical or anything like that, but keep in mind that actual myths are going to be VERY different from modern retellings

-the myth of medusa you probably know (her being a victim of poseidon and being cursed by athena) isn't 100% accurate to GREEK mythology (look up ovid)

-there is no version of persephone's abduction in which persephone willingly stays with hades, that's a tumblr invention (look up homeric hymn to demeter)

-as much as i would like it, no, cerberus' name does not mean "spot" (probably a misunderstanding from this wikipedia article)

-zeus isn't the only god who does terrible things to women, your fav male god probably has done the same

-on that note, your fav greek hero has probably done some heinous shit as well

-gods are more complicated than simply being "god of [insert thing]", many titles overlap between gods and some may even change depending on where they were worshipped

-also, apollo and artemis being the gods of the sun and the moon isn't 100% accurate, their main aspects as deities originally were music and the hunt

-titans and gods aren't two wholly different concepts, titan is just the word used to decribe the generation of gods before the olympians

-hector isn't the villain some people make him out to be

-hephaestus WAS married to aphrodite. they divorced. yes, divorce was a thing in ancient greece. hephaestus' wife is aglaia

-ancient greek society didn't have the same concepts of sexuality that we have now, it's incorrect to describe virgin goddesses like artemis and athena as lesbians, BUT it's also not wholly accurate to describe them as aromantic/asexual, it's more complex than that

-you can never fully understand certain myths if you don't understand the societal context in which they were told

-myths have lots and lots of retellings, there isn't one singular "canon", but we can try to distinguish between older and newer versions and bewteen greek and roman versions

-most of what you know about sparta is probably incorrect

-reading/waching retellings is not a substitute to reading the original myths, read the iliad! read the odyssey! i know they may seem intimidating, but they're much more entertaining than you may think

greek mythology is so complex and interesting, don't go into it with preconcieved notions! try to be open to learn!

Okay, but this sentence single-handedly summarizes Spender's personal issues with his own mentors and his problems taking care of the kids in his charge???? I never even realized this until now.

Spender was raised in a home that caused his parent-figure standards to be abysmally low - the bar to clear is "do you offer a single ounce of encouragement or verbal support?" His mentors, while not terrible teachers per se (Spender did receive actual training in certain spectral things), were often not emotionally present (Master Guerra, Boss Leader, Agent Walker) or if they were offering emotional support it often came with the added burden of "we unfortunately have bigger problems to contend with" (Burgers, Boss Leader). I'm not sure where Agent Summers falls on this scale (hopefully we'll find out). They aren't parent figures - they're adults who teach and their teaching role is put to the side when they have to deal with the bigger, scarier threats/personal problems in *Redacted*view.

As a consequence, Spender believes that most of his mentors did a good job being encouraging, inspiring teachers/parental figures when in reality they gave him bare minimum emotional support and Spender's low self esteem/family issues/spectral situation made him believe they were god-tier adults and good parental figures.

Fast-forward to the present and Spender is trying to be a fun, cool, encouraging mentor but has dubious role models that he's drawing inspiration from. The kids also have (somewhat) better opinions of themselves than Spender did at their age, so they're able to see lip-service mentoring (however well intended) for what it actually is. (This is also why Isabel seems the closest with Spender, not just because of their shared history, but because she also craves better parental figure support like Spender did when he was younger.) However, Spender fills a role that all of these kids need - none of their parents offer spectral support. Spender claims that he does and because of this he becomes another parental stand-in for all of them.

The tragedy is that Spender can't exactly help being a poor mentor/parent because he has no positive examples to draw from, but he is absolutely going to wreck his relationships with the Activity Club if he can't see his actions for what they are.

There's been no hint of a werewolf in town, or in the woods (except Shrike). That means that no matter their relationship status, their arguments or fights or make outs or secrets - Spender always is with Jean during the full moon to block out its light and keep him from turning.

spender and isabel’s dynamic makes me ill in a good way.

they knew each other when she was really young. they were favored by the same teacher, but not equally. isabel heard the story of how spender saved mayview, just like a storybook hero. that same night, he protected her from a werewolf. she’s witnessed his heroism firsthand.

then time passes. even though they’re still in the same space, still see each other every day, he’s a teacher now. a mentor. he leads the missions, he keeps them together, but he’s not the cool big brother type anymore. he tries to play off his changes, he’s got his crazy antics and goofy smile, but it doesn’t reach his eyes. there’s something wrong, but he won’t tell her what it is.

and then she gets the first glimpse at what that thing is, but she doesn’t get all the way there.

and then the next day, she finally manages to break through his barriers. they have a heart to heart. he gives her a look, crosses his arms confidently, and he’s back to being that cool older brother she remembers, the one that took her camping so long ago. they can support each other. they can be close.

and then, less than two hours later, she learns it wasn’t him she had that conversation with. they didn’t actually bond that day. it was something else possessing him. and she carries that in all their future interactions.

and i can’t wait for it to boil over disastrously.
