We closed up the screened in porch for the winter last November. As the snow melted and the squirrels became more plentiful, the cats have been dying to get back out there.

Even though it was in the mid-40s, we thought the cats could enjoy a good hour of porch time. Figuring they would perch on the top of the chairs and let their nostrils take in all the scents, Link, instead, zeroed in on the cat nip plant that croaked last August*.

Fresh air? Who needs it! Dead cat nip is where it's at.

*Don't ask why it was still out there. Sometimes it takes me a while to get to things.

Woke up to this on the end of the bed. Now all I want is a black and tan. Happy St. Patrick's Day!

[Ed. note: The intent of this post was to take my cats’ colors and tie it to a popular St. Patrick’s Day drink in the U.S. However, I’ve learned that “black and tan” is a phrase with a loaded history and is actually rather insensitive. After an exhausting 30-minutes of stuffed squirrel play, my cats give each other a "nice job, bro," high-five.

See, cats are just like humans, bro.

A few years ago I worked at the University of Minnesota. It was the worst job I’ve ever had. 

The day I was ready to tender my resignation, this was sitting on my desk. I thought the universe was trying to tell me to stick it out longer -- that the job would get better. So, I stayed for another year. 

Spoiler alert: the job did not get better. In fact, it got worse. 

But I did keep this photo. And it still makes me smile. The one good thing I got from that job.

Things Cats Find Stupid

A lot of bloggers are posting about their cats having New Year's resolutions. What about living with a cat has made you believe that they would ever do anything you wish of them?

Seriously, people. Cats 101.

I am filing this in the inaugural edition of "Things Cats Find Stupid." It ranks right up there with baths, costumes and trips to the vet.

Have you ever seen a cat try to eat a chicken wing? No? Well, now you have.

I've got to tip my hat to Cosmopolitan for combining two of my favorite things into a single video. 

Although more than four years old, I still get the song stuck in my head, although my version is really "Cats/No abs." Plus, I’m forever smitten with the adorable CJ Richards (please, marry me).

This is, quite possibly, the greatest display of cat affection by men I have ever witnessed. I want to meet these guys -- and all of the cats -- immediately.

Seriously. I need a glass table. Stat.

Recently we binge-watched some classic movies on Netflix, and soon after Robert DeNiro's famous "you talkin' to me" line in Taxi Driver, I looked over at Link and he gave me this face.

Raising a cat is kind of like raising a child.

You say "no" a lot, and even after you try to advert the attention to something more suited for a feline, they will continue to do whatever it is that you didn't want them to do in the first place.

Although this is certainly part of their charm, don't you wish they listened better?

I know you love milk, Winston. I love it to. But, I also know how this story is going to end and it involves diarrhea and projectile vomiting.

Don't say I didn't tell you so.
