Grey, windy and pretty much unsurfable
Grey, windy and pretty much unsurfable
Hello Friends, What a week. Another windy, showery and extremely junky day along the beaches of Sydney. Wind was 17-24 kts from the ESE at 0730, it’s been blowing like that all night and it looks from the forecast as though it’s not backing off any time soon. Throw in the ‘heavy at times’ rain, and it’s shaping to be pretty ordinary for awhile yet. I’m hoping the Goat will see some hope in the…

SE and junky
Hello Friends, We had 12-15 kts of SSE wind and mostly cloudy skies as Wednesday got started along the beaches. As of 0700 swell at sea was 1.7 metres from 141° at 8 seconds apart. Swell is set to increase as the day goes along, but the wind’s set to turn easterly and it won’t be back off either. South Steyne Weather Situation A high pressure system over the southern Tasman Sea is extending a…

Smooth little lines and cloudy skies
Smooth little lines and cloudy skies
Manly run again this morning and to my surprise it was only lightly textured and there were little waist high lines well suited to mals. Next stop: Curly

Smooth early, southerly later
Smooth early, southerly later
Hello Friends, Wind was coming from the west at 8-10 kts around 0730, so the surface conditions were really pretty nice looking. Made the Manly run this morning and it looked soft but fun for the right equipment along the middle stretch. Curly was bigger and choppier and Dee Why was in between in both size and choppiness. Swell at sea was 2 metres at 10 seconds and dead south. After the gloom and…

Weak, small and bumpy early
Weak, small and bumpy early
Hello Friends, Kind of as expected this morning. Skies started clearing just before sunrise, but the wind was a steady 7-8 kts from the NNE, so the 1.5 metre 7-second NE wind swell was kind of lumpy and weak looking. Set wave faces would briefly stand up into the shoulder high range at the focal points. There were a few such along the Narrabeen stretch and around at Longy to Dee Why as well. And…

NE wind from the get-go
NE wind from the get-go
Hello Friends, Grey skies and 9-11 kts of NNE wind chopping up a tiny 1.4 metre 5-second NE bump as Friday gets started in Sydney. Although it was holding off when I grabbed the snaps, the Bureau tells us we have a 95% chance of showers as we head to a high of 27C. Wondering about the weekend surf prospects? Well, that’s why the Goat rolled out a fresh forecast last night for your…

Nup, nada, naw
Hello Friends, Onshore and just about flat along the beaches this morning. As of 0730, the wind was ENE 7-12 kts at North Head. Swell at sea was a shade under the metre mark at about 9 seconds from 159°. Tide was coming into the 0800 1.77 m high and showers were falling here and there. The drippy weather should continue across the day as we head to a high of 27C. Water temp’s still a balmy…

Tiny chop early
Hello Friends, The numbers tell the story: swell at sea as of 0745 was 1.4 metres at 8-9 seconds from 171°, wind at North Head was SE 6-7 kts and tide had just peaked at 1.7 metres around 0710. There was a light drizzle falling at various points along the beaches and we are headed to a high of 25C. Beachwatch was reporting an ocean temp of 24C. Did the Manly run and saw nothing above knee…

Back to tiny for Tuesday
Back to tiny for Tuesday
Hello Friends, Swell faded out by yesterday afternoon and this morning sees less than a metre of 10 second SSE swell dribbling into our beaches. Best exposures could be into the knee high range, but expect to do a bit of waiting around. Wind was out of the WNW early, but is expected to go around to the S-SE around lunchtime. Not that it matters much, but tide was high at 0610 and will hit low at…

Fading but still a few big ones this morning
Fading but still a few big ones this morning
Hello Friends, Had to be in Manly before sunrise this morning, so grabbed a few snaps on my return to RealSurf HQ. Tide was high at 0500, so everywhere had a kind of fat look. Plus it was generally scrappy and lumpy looking despite the smooth surface and light wind early. Didn’t see anyone in the water along the Manly stretch for the dawn patrol, but it looked to be chest to shoulder high on the…

Heaps of swell piling in Sunday morning
Heaps of swell piling in Sunday morning
Hello Friends, Swell at sea was in the 2-3 metre range from the SE at 14 seconds apart, so bomb sets at Dee Why this morning looked to be in the 2x overhead range. When I grabbed the day’s first pics around 0830, people were sitting pretty far north of the point, suggesting that there are still some bomb sets. It also looked to be reasonably consistent. Wind was 5-6 kts from the WNW, so surface…

Sizable Saturday
Hello Friends, At first light skies were overcast and we had 11-13 kts of SW wind. Out at sea the waverider buoy was registering 2.7 metres of 11-12 second swell from the SE (160°). Tide was running out to the 0.5m low at 0925. Surface conditions were smooth and the lines were long – which meant the better exposed beaches were seeing lots of shutdowns; pretty typical for longer period swell in…

Sunny surfy Friday
Hello Friends, Distinct south line showing in the ocean this morning. Skies were sunny and the wind was out of the SW at 9-10 kts as of 0800. As you can see from the pics, it isn’t big – yet. Set waves at the point and the beach were in the waist high range, but that should change soon as a fresh, strong south pulse starts to fill in. At 0800 it was 1.5 m at 10 seconds from 164° and tide was…

Waist plusses
Hello Friends, Sunny skies, light WNW breeze for the early and an a shade under 2 metres of dead south 9-10 second period swell out at sea. Tide hit low at 0700 and is currently coming in to a 1.5 metre high at 1310. Water quality should be good most places and temp is sitting on a balmy 23C. Fun waist to chest high sets along the Manly stretch. Not super busy either. Fairly high shutdown…

Rough old southerly morning
Rough old southerly morning
Hello Friends, Grey skies, occasional showers and 14-23 kts of southerly wind raking the beaches this morning. As the pictures show, there are waves, but they’re rough and you’d want to be very keen to make the effort. Set wave faces looked to be in the chest to shoulder high range along the beach and more waist to chest at the point. Out as sea the swell was 2.6 metres from the SSW (190°) at 12…

Small to tiny, slow and bumpy
Small to tiny, slow and bumpy
Hello Friends, Sunny Tuesday morning with a light SSW breeze early. Surf conditions at Dee Why looked to be in the knee to waist high range. Out at sea the buoys were seeing 1.8 metres of 9-second straight south swell. Tide is coming off the low and headed toward a 1.8 metre high at 1125. Ocean temp is up to 24C according to Beachwatch. Wind is set to come up from the south at 15-20 kts, which…

Knee high Monday morning
Knee high Monday morning
Hello Friends, Cloud was lurking off to the north and south, but the beaches were sunny and the wind was light NW. Unfortunately the wave situation was looking uninspiring. There were long waits for (maybe) knee high sets at Dee Why. Tide was coming into the 1.89 high at 1040. Swell at sea was 0.8 m and coming from 118° at 10 seconds apart. We’re heading to a 33C high ahead of a cool gusty south…
