Planning to Start a Non-Profit? Read This.
In addition to Real Women Give, I co-founded a nonprofit focused on HIV/AIDS awareness. While it started as an act of passion, it is certainly hard work. Many people often ask how we got started or ask for tips. That is one of the reasons why RWG was launched.
In a recent article on Levo.com, a young woman named Sarah shares some lessons learned when she started her non-profit, Lori's Hands. While my favorite tip is "Be fearless," the most important one is "You're a business owner, so act like one." When starting your own non-profit, many of the same rules of entrepreneurship apply.
You can read the rest of Sarah's tips here. Be sure to share your own in the comments.

"What if, instead, we used technology to put cash directly into a poor person's hand?" - Joy Sun, COO of GiveDirectly
This is an interesting thought and organization. While direct cash transfers can't solve all of the issues associated with poverty, it can be part of the solution. Thoughts?

Uncovering the truth is powerful.

“I found a girl’s phone number in his pocket one night when he came home late from work. I thought: ‘I can leave, or I can resolve myself to it.’ I had young children at the time, and no income, and no family to fall back on, so I decided to live with it. There were times he’d stay out all night, or wouldn’t answer the phone. But he was a good father. He worked. We went on vacations together. I think he was sick for about a year before he finally went to the doctor. He didn’t even tell me himself. His doctor told me that I needed to get tested, because my husband had AIDS.”

Supporting a Friend with a Hospitalized Child

While we've been conditioned to think of giving mainly in terms of volunteering or donating, there are many other ways that we can demonstrate a giving spirit. One of the main ones is to show compassion and support to a friend or loved one who is going through a difficult time. Today, I came across a Huffington Post article that lists "15 Dos and Donts for Helping a Friend with a Child in the Hospital." This can be an incredibly vulnerable and stressful time for parents during any part of the year, but especially during the holidays.
If you find yourself wondering what to do or how to help, I encourage you to check out this incredibly helpful list.
