Editorial Mock-Ups:
Front cover: For my project our topic was based around consumerism. I wanted to put together a cover which was smart and intriguing to consumers. Firstly, it was time to decide on a magazine name, I decided to call it ‘Ace’ as I wanted it to be a metaphor for how consumers feel when buying products. An Ace is a card in a pack that we all want, we don't necessarily need it to win but we all have greed for it. I feel as though this resonates with a consumers ideology as when we go shopping or buy online as we shop for things we don't need, we just buy based on things we want (that greed feeling).
Another reason I decided to use the word Ace is because the sense of happiness we associate with having it, when we're playing a deck of cards we instantly feel a sense of happiness because we know the sense of value associated with the card. Although, we don't feel this exact feeling when buying products we still have that sense of happiness when we purchase something new that we have wanted.
The image on the front cover: The image on the cover is of Phil Knight, I feel as though he has the most relevance to my project as he is a founder of Nike, which we all are aware is one of the biggest sport companies in the world. I used an old black and white photo and placed the button ‘Add to Cart’ over his eyes. I felt as though this just became an icon symbolism for when consumers by into a company they give into that capitalist system.
The colour palette: From the start of the project I wanted to implement a simplistic colour palette. When conducting my research I found the magazines I was drawn to the most only used around 3 colours. I used the colour red as i feel as though it has good and bad connotations which is perfect for the module are there are good and bad sides to consumerism which will be spoken about in the essay.

DIGITAL DECLUTTER

After establishing my concepts and the message I wanted to put out to my audience in my campaign I began building an info graphic for my piece. Creating an infographic is not something that I have ever dabbled in within my art journey however, I felt that as I am in my first year of university it’s been really vital for me to push myself out of my comfort zone to really explore all types of design aspects to really understand what I love.
After researching into different types of advice I wanted to put out to my audience I felt like the 3 tips that I included were the ones that suited my campaign and the message I wanted to put out to the younger people.
The creative process behind this started by creating a colour scheme which I developed from the logo design I had created. Once I created my colour palette I then taken some time to do some scamp sketches and different designs and compositions which I felt was an effective structure. I developed this piece on Adobe Illustrator and felt that using this software was an easy and straight-forward process. It is an application I enjoyed using and creating this piece has allowed me to understand the software in greater depth.

Interview with Louise... A mental health support worker
Question 1: What do you feel is the most common form of mental health issue?
Answer: Based on my experience working within community mental health, most common mental health conditions are depression and anxiety, often overlapping and not occurring in isolation. Whilst not directly a mental health diagnosis, I have also found that low confidence and self esteem is a common difficulty that people experience.
Question 2: Through your work and profession what age range do you feel is most effected by mental health issues?
Answer: There is no specific age range that experiences more mental health difficulties than another. At different stages in our lives, there are different circumstances, life events and situations that can all result in experienced mental health difficulties. If you were to focus on the age range that specifically concerns mental health difficulties due to social media, I would say 18-30, but individuals affected by social media are getting younger, as people are exposed to social media early in life now.
Question 3: Within society today do you feel that there is a connection between the usage of social media and it having an impact on peoples mental health?
Answer: There is definitely a connection between social media use and mental health difficulties. This is evidenced everywhere; through research (and this is a topic I focused on during my dissertation), through supporting young adults in my work, personal experience by experiencing it myself or seeing loved ones experience it and ironically it is spoken about across social media platforms. There is largely a comparison culture when it comes to social media (we compare ourselves and our lives to others) whether that be comparing how we look, our fashion, our friendship circles, how we love our lives, our careers and even how we portray our lives (e.g. taking the perfect “selfie”). Social media can stress people out, make people feel low, anxious and perhaps because of how we compare ourselves or being concerned about how others will view us based on what we post. Body dysmorphia and disordered eating has also been associated with social media use, again because of the comparison between body types and appearance and the online fitness world. Social media can also affect our productivity and therefore make us feel low and demotivated, as well as impact on sleep as a) smartphone/device use before bed has been associated with sleep difficulties and b) being consumed with social media can impact on our abilities to actually go to sleep.
Question 4: Do you feel as though social media creates a positive or negative impact on this generation of people?
Answer: With regards to whether social media has had a positive or negative impact on the current generation, I would say both. It has had a positive impact as it has allowed us to connect with our friends and loved ones (especially during one of the most difficult times we have ever been through in our lives!), share our successes, our happy moment and memories that we can look back on, share funny “memes” or posts that we can relate to and make us smile whilst the current situation in real life has been scary and daunting. Also, with exercise and fitness being known to greatly improve mental health, social media has allowed us to make exercise and fitness more accessible through online workouts, videos, guides and so on. Most importantly, social media has given us the ability to talk about mental health, start the conversation and share resources and information about how we can seek support for our mental health or manage it independently.
Social media has also had a negative affect on the current generation, as explained earlier, we have almost been consumed by it and it is as if it dictates our lives and how we should live it based on the lives of others. For example, we do certain things because “that would look good on the gram”. We can even miss out on what is going on in the real world due to how easy it is to access social media, through our smartphones. A lot of the points I would make about why it is negative have already been addressed above in Question 3 (impact on mood, well-being, confidence, self-esteem).
Question 5: From your career what do you feel as though will help promote awareness of social media effects on mental health?
Answer: Through my career, I feel that social media itself can help promote the effects of social media on mental health. Considering we are a generation that consider social media a big part of our lives, it would only make sense to promote this topic on social media. I have seen a lot already in terms of posts on Facebook and Instagram, but I feel a lot more professionals could use this to their advantage by holding online talks, webinars, post more about it on YouTube and make these things a lot more accessible by connecting with the government. That way, these kind of things would be promoted more on the news or government websites, so even family members can support individuals of our generation to understand the impact of social media on our mental health. Having social support is key mental health management, as people can feel very alone with it. In a nutshell, if we can have the conversation about mental health and how social media affects it within smaller groups (e.g. our family and friends), just like all news, will spread like wild fire and therefore promote awareness throughout society.

Character fun
For my campaign I also wanted to incorporate my own little characters. I had a visual of wanting to have solid shapes rather than defined features after conducting my research I found that the majority of infographics has minimal designs which looked really effective as it doesnt take the refined detail away for the information.
I really enjoyed creating these characters as I found it fun, experessive and playful. Going forward I am going to develop these designs in a digital art form and see how I can incorporate them well into the campaign.

Mental Health Campaign

Starting my campaign I have began by creating a brand. I listed a variety of names being mindful that I wanted to had alliteration. I came up with the name 'Supporting Smiles' which I felt like was not only encouraging but also added a sense of happiness. I played with a variety of different compositions however enjoyed the round shape after researching into logo design and being inspired by the Starbucks logo.
I was overall happy with the logo design I created. I really enjoy the playfulness I added into the logo by creating a smiley face. This added to the imagery of the 'Smiles' part of the brand name.
Once I was happy with the brand aesthetic it was time to build the campaign. As I wanted this to be an instagram post I began with the use of statistics. Sticking with the colour palette I incorporated another font style which I felt complimented the logo and typeface of the logo too. I also added a contrast of black because I wanted it to stand out as much as the red does.
My current final outcomes I feel very happy with and feel like that there is definitely a significant style running throughout which is exactly what I wanted for the project.

OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH SOCIAL MEDIA...
Today my university launched the project brief of ‘Social Issues’. For the brief I have started to explore our relationship with social media and if it has had an impact on our mental health.
It’s interesting to research into the amount of mental health cases and how they have risen especially within the younger generation and talking from personal experience I feel like social media has had an influence to this.
We’re consumed by happy faces, perfect lifestyles, constant comparison and even exposed to online bullying which can be detrimental to our mental health. If you haven’t experienced cyber bullying you have most likely definitely seen someone else receive abuse. We scroll through many Instagram posts a day which can trigger negative thoughts.
Why am I not that attractive?
I wish I could afford her lifestyle?
Urgh, they have such a perfect figure! *While we bite into our chocolate bar*
If we didn’t have this access we realistically would only know a handful of extremely buff guys or supermodel looking girls but social media exposes us to hundreds a day. This is where I am building a concept for ‘DIGITAL DECLUTTER’. My campaign is going to encourage those not to get rid of social media but to declutter the things that do not bring you joy or happiness. Assess the post and ask yourself is this helping me in anyway or upsetting me in anyway?
I will be posting my journey of my campaign throughout my tumblr and hopefully reach someone out there to start their process in digital decluttering.

Detailed or minimal design.
Today I began exploring the finer detailed art on the Procreate software and it created the debate in my head of what’s more effective? The perfectly detailed designed drawings or alternatively the minimal shape drawings. I have to admit I have a strong love for both. Detailed makes us go ‘wow’ but the minimal are so simple yet we think ‘that’s cool’ or ‘that’s clever’
What do you prefer?

CUBISM.
On my artist journey cubism has never been something I have explored. I wanted to set myself the challenge of developing work which was out of my comfort zone and after recently purchasing the procreate software I felt there was no better way to let my creative side flow.
I began with the mindset of creating a portrait, it was important for me in incorporate colour and also sticking with the surrealism theme.
Overall I was happy with the outcome and what I developed and it’s something that I wouldn’t like to continue going forward but instead focusing on a person rather that drawing freely. I feel like this will challenge myself further as I will have to try and make a surreal image but with like ability to an individual.

After recently purchasing the iPad with procreate I felt like it was time to explore the wonderful world of digital art.
With so many different brush types, screen sizes, words that didn’t make much sense I spent the day trying the basics. I found some images of artists which I love and began the tracing technique. I mainly did this as I wanted to trial the different brush strokes and get use to the iPads great shortcuts. Overall I was loving how these turned out and ending up completing three in one day.
Using procreate has been something different and something I would love to develop from, now having a bit more understanding of the app and how it functions it will allow me to only progress and that in itself is something I am extremely excited for.

THE VAN GOGH EXPERIENCE
After a recent trip to the Van Gogh Alive Experience at the Hippodrome we entered the venue to see these beautiful perfectly composed screens. This was the main focus of the exhibition and drew the audience in with the loud classical music and an illustrated story using text. Overall it gave me inspiration in the idea of illustrating a story through the use of a animation and art, the complimentary use of music really empowered the show and the dark room lit up by the motion of paintings and drawings allowed you to fully engage within the experience.
