   HEADCANON ; Retirement, Regret & the Pain of Loss

  in destiny 2, Red is retired, or for the most part, he’s taken a desk job in the Tower still working under cartography & reconnaissance. a lot of the time, he isn’t needed, due to the ‘newer generation’ of Guardians, along with their practices & far greater abilities. his desk job has him spending more time in his office, which so happens to be the remnants of what would have been the barracks that his fire-team had worked in. meaning, the walls & a lot of the corners of the buildings are already littered with Hunter relics & countless charts & maps of areas near the Cosmodrome & the EDZ, along with other parts of the solar system that had been touched by the coyote’s fire-team.

   even to the present day of Destiny 2, Red still takes full responsibility of the deaths of his fire-team, declaring that ‘the order he had issued was a full-blown guess, an un-calculated risk’. asides from drinking & smoking those issues away, Red could be found pushing himself with training, push ups, chin-ups & other exercises that shouldn’t require all to much cardio. he would seemingly push himself, the cadence of the push ups being almost 2-3 per second, working a sweat fairly quickly. if working out the pain doesn’t work– well there are other things he does.

   sometimes, even after working out, with whatever stamina remains in him, he’ll begin to take whatever anger he has left out onto the floor, unrelentingly pounding his fists into the ground until the skin begins to scrape from the knuckles of his left hand. sometimes when he’s trying to drink his issues away, he’ll end up tossing bar-glasses across the room, against his desk or even just applying enough pressure to have it shatter in his fist & if that happens, he always makes sure that it’s in his left hand, not his right. just so he’ll be able to feel the sting from the glass.

   after these ‘fits’ there’s usually a large amount of glass scattered around the office-space & the old man is usually hunched over his desk, head in hands & a freshly lit cigarette with almost no lights on.

   often enough as he can, Red will visit the graves of his comrades, ever since he was finally able to give them a proper funeral since the Red Legion attacked. As often as he’s able, it’s usually every Thursday if he can manage, bringing with him a small care package of an assortment of items, a bottle of whiskey & six glasses, a small bouquet of flowers for each grave along with some smaller items, some obviously being a pack of cigarettes, one for him & two other coyotes who enjoyed smoking, because of them, made Red the way he was.

I think Red smells like... hm... the initial smell is that of stale smoke with a strong heady mix of whiskey. The smoke is predominantly tobacco, but with undertones of wood smoke and pine as well as gunpowder. There are notes of that kinda... saddle smell??? Well cared for old leather and salt from sweat. And some of that kind of coins/hot metal/soldering iron smell. Old armor. Also, dark roast coffee. A dark, burning smell that's almost unpleasant, but in a strange way very comforting.
