Language partakes in the world-wide dissemination of similitudes and signatures. It must, therefore, be studied itself as a thing in nature. Like animals, plants, or stars, its elements have their laws of affinity and convenience, their necessary analogies.

NAP has too many books, chapbooks, and lit mags.
NAP thinks it is unhealthy for books to sit on a shelf and not be read.
NAP thinks maybe one of you will want to read these books.
NAP is going to give away a medium flat rate priority box full of books. (Winner must live in the...

We spoke on the phone not long after Veselka had accepted the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize awarded to a fiction debut. Her searing essay about the years she spent hitchhiking as a teen and the run-in she had with a possible serial killer had just come out in GQ. She’d completed a trilogy...

Sometimes I like to be able to step back from the words on the page and doodle the characters drunkenly on cocktail napkins. This is not necessarily to lay down the specifics of say, their clothes, but to hash out an overall energy to them, like a caricature. Though it may seem to simplify them at first, it serves as a jumping off point for me to dig deeper into who they are, once a basic personality is interesting enough to make me want to actually save the cocktail napkin. - Jeff Phillips

The Novel Effect : Introducing Red Lemonade online workshops
A five-week online course/workshop that explores the art versus craft of novel writing and helps you develop a reader-centered approach to longform fiction.
DATES: July 23-August 24, 2012 LOCATION: Wherever you can get a live connection to the cloud COST: $155 (via Paypal)
REGISTRATION is now open. (You are registered once payment is received.) More information on payment in the next blog post ( Friday 7/6)
MORE ABOUT THE COURSE: It’s designed for writers who have moved beyond the just-started-writing-a-novel phase but have not yet reached the end of a project. Not to dis short story writers or memoirists, we are focusing on the unique qualities of the novel form. Enrollment is limited to 10 writers per course section.
Two tracks are offered: theory and practice. Writers will be encouraged to participate in both tracks.
THEORY: Each Monday, the facilitator posts a new blog entry on one of the topic areas listed in the syllabus. In a password-protected, private forum setting, participants work out the knots in applying theory to their writing. Students also post blog entries of their own related to the course.
PRACTICE: In a public platform, writers are encouraged to post sections or full manuscripts of novels-in-progress on the Red Lemonade site with workshop mates commenting on each other’s work. Upon request, the course facilitator will provide personalized and private feedback on workshop participants’ writing samples outside the Red Lemonade community.
Writers can participate in one or both tracks. The level of engagement is up to you. The more you put into the experience, the more you’ll take away. The course concludes with a plan for next steps.
WHAT YOU TAKE AWAY
A theoretical framework, adapted to your own work, toward writing effect-driven fiction
Feedback from the facilitator, workshop mates, and others on a piece of writing (hosted on the Red Lemonade site)
Access to the facilitator for review of a writing sample
Networking opportunities
A thank-you gift and certificate of completion
WHY TAKE THIS COURSE
It’s less expensive than other online and in-person courses of this caliber
The content differs broadly from what’s covered in traditional workshops/MFA programs
