Certified math moment: Hearing Sgt Tibbs count off 99 Dalmatian puppies and wondering for several minutes where the other two for the title were going to come from. Then again, Roger’s running tongue-in-cheek implication that Pongo’s potent dad nut spawned all these progeny indicates that math isn’t foremost on this story’s mind, either. Fortunately for us all, that doesn’t matter in the least. There is so much effortless charm in this simple family rescue and escape story that propels it along like a car careening down a snowy country road. After Pongo and Perdita’s puppies have been pilfered, a relief network of dogs kicks into gear to find and help recover these pups (and then some) from the evil Cruella de Vil and her lackeys. The support along the way pushes things along, but also helps to add tension: will a long march through the driving snow prove too much, or can the group load everyone onto a departing van before their soot disguises are exposed? Simplicity isn’t always everything, but here every little detail counts.

Even though they’re not key to the plot the humans in our story aren’t squandered, either. Roger and Anita have an instant rapport and small textural details indicate their genuine care for one another, and it’s not hard to fall in love with Nanny’s doting but driven ways. The two have a humorous relationship, and Roger nursing an initially presumably stillborn pup back to life shows he’s a good man. The film has a good time with how people and pets are connected, initially as a sight gag about how people tend to have dogs that superficially resemble themselves. But this carries onward into the military proceedings of the farm animals living on the estate of an unseen military man. And then there’s Cruella. Preceded often by a sickly green plume of smoke, her ghastly silhouette in the front door window of the Radcliffes’ home is up there with the introduction of the Stepmother in Cinderella as some of Disney Animation’s truly striking first impressions of a villain. Sure, she’s not much more than a dyed in the wool bitch, but sometimes that’s all you need. And hey, you know you’ve it when someone writes a diss track about you that apparently achieves radio play status on the level of “Not Like Us.”

Rescue probably would have been a little easier if Pongo and Perdita hadn’t basically raised their pups to be iPad kids.
