i guess one of the most important things about my interpretation of mangagaway (aka corona ect ect) is that despite being a deity, she has spent most of her life living among mortals. she is a shape shifter but prefers to stay in one form for longer periods of time. following the beginning of spanish colonization, corona traveled the country, spending time in the most desolate islands and the highest mountains. presenting herself as a human, it was only natural that she adopt the practices of the various indigenous people that she came to stay with. in her time in the cordillera region, corona was given extensive tattoos, covering her arms and chest. these were said to enhance beauty and fertility.
some five hundred years or so later, in present day, these tattoos are still visible regardless of what form she decides to take. they are mostly geometric lines going vertically down her arms, alternating in patterns representing snake skin (snakes being a familiar of mangagaway, and tools used to prolong the illness of her victims) and a the scales down a snake’s belly.
#ooc.#when will i get my shit together :^ )#anyway#the tattoo culture mentioned is specific to the kalinga tribe#which is different from the tagalog tribe where mangagaway's mythos is taken from#i wanted to shed light on another cool and unique part of the vast array of filipino culture#as my dad is from the cordillera region#while my mom's side is from central luzon#where the tagalog population was mostly concentrated in#before the spanish came#im sweating tbh

i have to go to work soon but !!! here’s a lil’ backstory n a tiny tiny tiny lesson about filipino mythos!! there’s Not A Lot out there about it, really, but it’s super interesting if you’re lookin to learn something new!!
mangagaway is the goddess of disease/illness in filipino (more specifically tagalog) mythology. she was known to be one of four subordinates of sitan, the ruler of the underworld (kasanaan), responsible for tempting mortals towards sin. mangagaway was thought to be the cause of sickness and had the ability to heal or kill anyone she so desired. she was also able to change form, often posing as a healer.
the mythology departs once corona comes into the picture, as she is more or less an incarnation of mangagaway in a modern setting. “corona gabayan” is simply one of many guises mangagaway has taken over many centuries, however, her dedication to her original purpose has significantly waned. having spent so much time away from her fellow deities, she has come to find comfort in living among mortals. although this doesn’t mean she has renounced her abilities.
corona presents herself as a medical professional, often under the employ of shady individuals looking for off the record help. however, she has been known to lend her abilities to the less fortunate at her own discretion. she knows that one day she will be called back to fulfill her duties and on some level, dreads it. her independence is her greatest treasure.
her current interests lie within the field of nanotechnology. although her formal education has been a grand total of one year in medical school (she’d tell you that she just wanted to kill some time), she has thoroughly immersed herself in learning all she can about implant technology and the like. she is by no means an expert, but has offered small “upgrades” to those willing to pay a hefty price.
#ooc.#bored and aloof gods are my fave ok .#lmao i'm rushing so i can get ready 4 work but ya !#thinkin of modern interpretations of other gods as well :^ )
