My grandmother is 75, and she has been held captive in a concentration camp since 2017. Every time I read witness testimonies from survivors, my heart shatters into a million pieces. My beautiful grandmother, the loviest and nicest person I’ve ever known, my role model, is imprisoned in a camp. The woman who encouraged me, the woman who used to call me „my rose“ or „my lamb“... I don’t even know whether you‘re still alive or not. And the guilt eats me alive every day. I pray that you are safe. I pray that one day I will hear your voice again.

Brazil is suffering from the worst COVID outbreak there is, and no one is talking about it. This is not just in terms of the number of cases, but also the government’s active refusal to do anything and in fact hurting attempts to help. 1 in every 4 COVID deaths in the world is in Brazil. There isn’t enough access to vaccines. Food is unaffordable, let alone masks. People are actually starving to death. Hospitals don’t have enough beds or oxygen. And if this is not enough of a reason to talk about it, the variant that is sweeping through Brazil is twice as contagious, and has also been seen to infect people who have already been infected with other variations of the virus. The variant has crossed borders already.
These Twitter threads give all the details that i know. Please go through this and share widely.
The second twitter thread provides details of how to donate. Here is a link. It is in Portugese, but google translate is working fine here and also, the author of the thread will translate to guide donation if contacted.
Please share with as many people as possible. The people of Brazil need international support.

What Really Happened in the Congo: Belgium’s ‘Heart of Darkness’
Leopold famously said when he was forced to hand over the Congo Free State to the Belgian nation: “I will give them my Congo but they have no right to know what I have done there,” and proceeded to burn archives.

HELP YEMEN
hello everyone! i hope you are all doing well!
today i want to speak to you about a very important cause that you can contribute to, even if you are a student who does not have the means to contribute financially.
i am sure you have probably heard of the crisis in yemen. if not, no worries! i suggest you educate yourself at the following links:
https://yemencrisis.carrd.co/
https://yemenhumancrisis.carrd.co/
https://helpyemen.carrd.co/
https://helpforyemen.carrd.co/
if you have already signed all the petitions you can, but likewise, you still want to continue to provide aid to those in need, go to freerice.com. freerice is a website that funds the World Food Programme through user interaction on the site. here is how it works:
you play freerice and answer questions (relating to a plethora of educational topics with varying levels that you can pick and adjust yourself) correctly. while you do this, advertisements appear on your screen. when you see one of these advertisements, you trigger a financial payment to the World Food Programme (WFP) to support its work saving and changing lives around the world. in the game, these payments are represented via grains of rice. the amount of money generated when you see an advertisement can vary, but is roughly equivalent to what the world food programme spends to purchase 10 grains of rice. by playing, you are generating the money that pays for this rice. this money is used for many types of assistance — not just rice — depending on where needs are greatest. regardless of the type of assistance, you can be sure that 100% of all funds generated on freerice go to the world food programme. freerice does not earn or keep any money it raises. you can learn more about the different ways the World Food Programme is funded here.
you will be getting academic practice whilst helping those in need. i strongly suggest you click the link right now and get set up!
i am tagging some mutuals here for this to receive more attention but please do not feel pressured!! @vercline @museeofmoon @wrekalavya @guulabjamuns @swathi-studies @gliagirlphd @studylikeara @amethyst-studies @slythsblog @studyblerin @55studies @philology-studies @clabujo @starchild-study @alicewestwater @lovingyou-is @chaibiskyoot @zuleymx @zxmed @physikblr
thanks for reading, stay educated, and stay safe!

Dear Tumblr,
Look, I know it’s annoying and tiring, what with our xenophobic, racist, capitalist, and ableist world and its nonstop injustices and grievances. But as a Chinese-American woman who’s experienced my fair share of verbal harassment for my race and gender, I’d really appreciate it if you would take a moment to read and reflect about the anti-AAPI hate crimes taking place not just recently, but since before the beginning of the pandemic. It’s too easy to sweep these things under the rug in the interest of attending to more urgent crises and social justice movements, but the AAPI community shouldn’t be an afterthought in the big picture of things, especially marginalized groups within this group, including working class, sex workers, those who don’t fit into so-called “model minority”. Credits to Dear Asian Youth on IG. I haven’t seen it shared on Tumblr yet, but maybe it has already; either way, it would be nice if you could reblog it as well. If you’d rather not read, feel free to keep scrolling but unfollow me first. Image 1: On March 16th, a gunman murdered 8 people at several Asian-run massage spas in Atlanta. Six of the victims were Asian women. CW: violence, mass shooting, racism, death
Image 2: What happened: At 4:50 PM, the first shooting occurred at Young’s Asian Massage in Acworth, where four people were murdered. Around 5:47 PM, Atlanta police responded to another shooting that occurred at Gold Spa, where they found three women shot. While at the scene, police received a report of shots fired at Aromatherapy Spa, where the body of another woman was found.
The police later arrested the shooter in Crisp County at approximately 8:00 PM, who later told law enforcement that he has a “sexual addiction.”
Image 3: Fetishization: Cherokee County sheriff Jay Baker reduced the shooting to the perpetrator having a “really bad day” because he wanted to “eliminate” a “temptation” from his “sexual addiction.”
This justification stems from “yellow fever”, an outdated and racist ideology that objectifies and fetishizes Asian women and contributes to the dehumanization of sex workers. Yellow fever promotes the belief that Asian women are exotic, submissive, and docile.
Comments like “love you long time” and “happy ending” continue to stigmatize, fetishize, and downplay violence against Asian women.
Image 4: Despite evidence of racial bias, many publicized attacks during the pandemic have not been treated as hate crimes, leaving many in the AAPI community to believe that anti-Asian violence is not being taken seriously. These crimes are rooted in racism and hatred towards Asian communities. CALL IT A HATE CRIME.
Image 5: RISE IN ANTI-ASIAN HATE CRIMES: Stop AAPI Hate recently released its latest national report, which shows that 3,795 anti-Asian hate incidents have been recorded from March 2020 to February 2021. A majority of these incidents (68%) were reported by women.
The increase in anti-Asian sentiment can be partially attributed to the widespread use of terms such as “Kung Flu,” “Chinese Virus,” and “Wuhan Virus” by high-profile officials such as former U.S. President Donald Trump. Many continue to use these terms, despite how it has instigated harassment and violence toward the Asian community.
Image 6: A GLOBAL ISSUE: The rise in anti-Asian hate crimes is not a uniquely American issue. In countries with significant Asian populations such as Canada and the United Kingdom, hate crimes against Asians are also increasing.
Canada: In Vancouver, hate crimes against Asian Canadians rose by 717%. Hate crimes in Ottawa increased by 57%, with most of the victims being of East or Southeast Asian descent. Montreal reported a spike of 30 hate crimes and racist acts specifically targeting Asians.
UK: The UK has seen a 300% increase in hate crimes targeting East and Southeast Asians since the start of the pandemic. Anti-Asian hate crimes have increased after every lockdown period, rising from 261 to 395 per month between April and June 2020.

I had a dream that the king and the queen of a small country had a daughter. They needed a son, a first-born son, so in secret, without telling anyone of their child’s gender, they travelled to the nearby woods that were rumoured to house a witch.
They made a deal with that witch. They wanted a son, and they got one. A son, one made out of clay and wood, flexible enough to grow but sturdy enough to withstand its destined path, enchanted to look like a human child. The witch asked for only one thing, and that was for their daughter.
They left the girl readily.
The witch raised her as her own, and called her Thyme. The princess grew up unknowing of her heritage, grew up calling the witch Mama, and the witch did her very best to earn that title.
She was taught magic, and how to forage in the woods, how to build sturdy wooden structures and how to make the most delicious stews. The girl had a good life, and the witch was pleased.
The girl grew into a woman, and learned more and more powerful magics, grew stronger from hauling wood and stones and animals to cook, grew smarter as the witch taught her more.
She learned to deal with the people in the villages nearby, learned how to brew remedies and medicines and how to treat illness and injury, and learned how to tell when someone was lying.
Every time the pair went into town, the people would remark at just how similar Thyme was to her mother.
(Thyme does not know who and what she is. She does not know that she was born a princess, that she was sold. She only knows that one night after her mother read her a story about princesses and dragons, her mother had asked her if she ever wanted to be a princess.)
((Thyme only knows that she very quickly answered no. She likes being a witch, thank you very much, she likes the power that comes with it and the way that she can look at things and know their true nature.))
The witch starts preparing the ritual early, starts collecting the necessities in the winter so they can be ready by the fall equinox. Her daughter helps, and does not ask what this is for, just knows that it is important.
The witch looks at Thyme, both their hands raised into the air over a complicated array of plants, tended carefully to grow into a circle, and says, sorry.

The events that unfolded over the past 24 hours in Atlanta were not isolated incidents. Hate crimes against Asian Americans have increased nearly 150% in the US in the last year.
Last June, in the wake up of yet another uprising in hate crimes committed by white supremacists, we released the following statement:
White supremacists, Nazis, and other purveyors of hate can fully fuck off. They are not welcome here.
These words are as true today as they were then. We stand with the Asian American community. If you see hate speech on Tumblr, please report it. That shit is not tolerated here.
To help the survivors and families of yesterday’s hate crimes, please consider donating to a nonprofit like the Atlanta branch of Asian Americans Advancing Justice if you can. If you can’t, consider spreading the word. We’ll list more resources and reblogs over on @action as we find them.
As always, please make sure you are taking care of yourself as well. If you’re struggling for any reason, please reach out to any of the free and confidential counseling services listed here.
