I know writing fight scenes can be intimidating, and I was told that my method and steps of writing out a scene was very helpful, so here's my step-by-step process of writing a battle:

1. Environment. Where are you? Where is this happening? What time of day is it? Are you outside or inside? What is around you?

2. Objects. I like thinking of the field as having things that can be manipulated. Trees, buildings, household objects, phones- anything around your characters is a Set Piece in the environment, until you specifically interact with it- and then it becomes a Prop.

3. Goal. What is your goal? Conflict comes with reason, and I tend to avoid "to win" as a goal because its obvious and aimless. If my goal is to prove a point, I'm going to behave differently from when my goal is to test someone, to have fun, or to escape, or to protect someone. Winning isn't a goal, winning is a direct vehicle to achieving a goal.

4. Method. What are we using to fight? Fighting a Pokemon Battle is not too different from hand to hand or with a weapon. All need to be treated as if its an extension of the Self. It's a tool to communicate a different kind of dialogue.

5. Action. What do you do? This is when I actually start to consider attack options. This one's pretty straight forward when you place it further down in your steps, because here you've already considered all the above.

6. Visual. What does it look like? What are the steps you take when executing a move, a hit, or a weapon strike? How do you move? Do you use any props, or is it simply power? How does everything above fall into place?

7. Result. How does it effect the environment? Are there scorch marks, property damage, lights busted? How is the setting now changed because of your actions?

This is the best way I've found of making sure fight choreography never feels static, structured in a way to circle back around to the very first steps. Feel free to use! Looking forward to more battles.
