And then when the literal worst case is happening right in front of them the most Zoey and Mira can do is be defensive. They don't engage, they don't move forward, they aren't aggressive. They didn't do that for anyone else. All they do is hold their ground and let Rumi run away and even then immediately afterwards they clearly regret that decision.

You can't tell me that if Rumi had opened up in a safe and comfortable environment with Mira and Zoey, while understandably confused, the pair would have absolutely been there for Rumi because opening up would've showed them how much she trusts the two of them.
