I want to take a moment to talk about something every man should have in his closet: a good wool sweater. I get a lot of men telling me they don't like wool because it's itchy. I used to feel the same way. But as I discovered recently, I was wearing wool the wrong way. T-shirts (even long sleeve ones) don't belong under a wool sweater. Those in the know wear a long sleeve button-front Oxford shirt underneath, preferably a cotton one, on the thick side. I prefer a button-down collar that stays inside (as shown in this pic), but a spread collar can work too. It doesn't have to match the sweater, in fact, sometimes it's better if it doesn't. The sweater/shirt combo is a great way to showcase your personal style, and it's very warm, while looking casual-yet-classy. This was a total game changer for me. It's not a necessity to get a 100% wool sweater. I prefer one like this LL Bean Snowflake sweater, that has a 25% nylon blend to give it a little stretch and breathability. Vintage wool is thicker and higher quality than modern wool, so thrift store finds are always great. For a springy, stretchy feel, try Merino wool. I like Merino cardigans and full-zip sweaters. And then of course there's Cashmere. It doesn't last as long as traditional wool, and costs a lot more, but DAMN it feels good, and is VERY warm. Unlike cotton or fleece sweaters which eventually lose their shape and end up looking awful after a season or two, wool lasts forever (as long as you don't wash it in the washing machine). Because wool has natural antibacterial properties, you really only need to have a sweater dry cleaned if you get something on it. I tumble mine in the dryer with a dryer sheet once a season to keep them smelling fresh. Wool is also a renewable resource, as many farms use the same sheep year after year to produce their wool. Check out American heritage companies like Woolrich, Johnson Woolen Mills, or my favorite, LL Bean. One more cool fact about wool: hunters prefer it because it keeps you warm even when it's wet!
