Deltarune Gemsonas

I finished watching Steven Universe and playing through all 4 chapters of Deltarune within the span of a couple weeks, so of course I had to make an AU about it!

(Many extra notes below the cut)

The main thing I focused on when picking gems was the color palette, and secondarily how much I liked the sound of the name.

General AU Notes

I'm going to be calling this "Deltagems AU" for organization and tagging purposes - not sure how much stuff I'll be making for it, I have a lot of ideas right now but my interest is fickle. If anyone else feels inspired by what I make for this or wants to do their own take on the concept, I won't mind if they use the same tag

All gems in this AU are going to be referred to with the same pronouns used for them in the game, rather than following SU's gem rules and using she/her for everyone

Names also work a little differently than SU canon; Gems are mostly referred to by their gem type title or number in formal / official categories, but most will also have a personal name used by those who are familiar with them.

The setting I'm imagining for this AU is based mostly on the dark world, especially Chapter 2. (I'll probably get more into that when I introduce Queen's design)

Kris & Soul Notes

(Chrysoberyl, Spinel, and Ruby Kyanite)

Kris on their own is a Chrysoberyl. I haven't yet decided on what kind of role is expected for a Chrysoberyl yet, but Kris probably wasn't very happy living that life.

The Soul is a red Spinel that cannot create much of a physical form on its own due to some kind of corruption, fragmentation, or other condition. It can create spider like legs to move around a little and has some awareness of its surroundings, but is very limited in how it can interact with the world

Kris and the Spinel fuse to create Ruby Kyanite. They're complete strangers when they first meet- it's a fusion made from desperation and need to survive rather than any kind of bond between them.

Spinel needs Kris to have a form, a life, a way to interact with others, and any kind of power. As for what Kris gets out of it...? (i have Ideas, but i think they need a little more time to stew)

Ruby Kyanite isn't really a whole new person made from two others, more a new form that Kris & Spinel share. Their two consciousnesses are still separate within it, and can both take control of it (Spinel does most of the moment to moment actions and choices, but when Kris has something they really want to do they can do it)

Spinel & Kris keep the fact that they're a fusion a secret from most, hiding Kris's gem beneath their bangs and avoiding questions about their gem type. They ended up introducing themselves as "Kris" to Susie, and that's what they've been called by her and Ralsei ever since.

Ametrine Susie

Susie is larger and more scary looking than most Ametrines, and has always had a difficult time fitting into gem society. I think she ends up living in the gutters and underground of Cyberworld, often on the run from gem authorities.

Before Ralsei & Kris befriend her, the mix of loneliness, being treated like a monster constantly, and hatred toward the systems and rules of gem society all lead to Susie lashing out a lot at the gems around her- often leaving a trail of poofed gems in her wake.

I'm not yet sure how Lancer's going to be incorporated into this AU, but I would like to include him & other elements of Chapter 1 (mainly cause I really like his & Susie's dynamic)

Watermelon Tourmaline Ralsei

I think the role of a Watermelon Tourmaline is kind of like a mix between the roles of Pearls and Sapphires - they're precious gems with a special kind of magic, in this case healing powers, considered valuable but expected to be very subservient to other gems.

I thought of just making Ralsei a Pearl, Sapphire, or fusion between them, but couldn't quite get any of those to work for both the kind of character design and narrative I want him to have.

I think trying to live up to the expectations of his role as a Watermelon Tourmaline is a good way to incorporate the way Ralsei thinks he needs to live for others and put them before himself at all times, but I'm not sure yet if there's a way to incorporate the prophecy into his AU story more directly.

I'm currently working on a fusion design for the fun gang (based on the Thrash Machine mech ehehehe), but I haven't quite settled on a gem type. Alexandrite and Fluorite both have great palettes for it, but they're also already taken by fusions in SU canon and I'm a bit hesitant to reuse them for a completely different combination of gems... Spectrolite and Mystic Quartz are the current main alternatives I'm considering, but they're a bit harder to get to work colorwise. (I'd love to hear other people's thoughts on this, I'm pretty stumped right now)

I'm also currently working on designs for Noelle, Queen, and Berdly. Noelle & Queen are basically complete, but Berdly... Berdly's giving me some trouble. When I finally figure him out I'll be posting the 3 of them all at once!

Once I'm done with all that, if I haven't run out of steam, I think I'll work on more designs for side characters and different fusion combinations. I'd love to take requests for those, if anyone has any!

Yeah!!

Hornet is my blorbo & comfort character of all time, and my go-to to doodle when I want to draw but don't have any ideas. I love her with my whole entire heart and soul.

I have a tradition of writing myself time capsule letters on my birthday, so every year I respond to a letter from Last Year's Me and write one to Next Year's Me. Every year since I started the tradition I've asked myself if I've gotten to play Silksong yet, and it'd be really cool if next year I'll get to say yes!

Here's some sketches of Hornet from a couple weeks ago, I was playing around with some ideas to try and make a gijinka design I like. Haven't really arrived at one yet, but I figured I'd share them for the occasion ^^
