Project Evaluation
The artwork that I have chosen to focus on from the “I Want! I Want!” exhibition is Ed Atkin’s video piece; “Warm, Warm, Warm Spring Mouths”. The artwork features digital representations of a mysterious long-haired character who resides at the bottom of the ocean and who seems trapped and distressed/dissatisfied/dispassionate about his circumstances. The work explores our relationship with the digital world and how much we can become immersed in it. This character is immersed in an oversaturated ocean of media and information. The pressure at the bottom of the ocean compresses everything together until it can no longer be differentiated – it becomes homogenous; all the same. This asks the question; can this happen in today’s digital age where images, videos, information, of practically anything can be found with great ease and speed online? When we have all of this imagery and information right in front of us can it start to all seem the same? Can an oversaturation reduce or nullify meaning/significance of any one image or piece of information?
I do not have the answers to these questions, and wouldn’t claim to. But I wanted to explore the ideas and the possibilities. The main question I wanted to ask is: Is there an oversaturation of media online? There definitely is a saturation of media online, but the term “oversaturation” means that there is too much. This is a subjective matter; too much for some is not enough for others, etc. And so I would say that there is definitely an oversaturation for some (which can be isolated to, for example, a person’s facebook feed), where they feel that there is too much media to look at, or that none of it has any significance to them and so is just noise.
I wanted to reflect these thoughts and questions in my work, and so I thought about how I could visually represent oversaturation. During a collage workshop, I found a large photocopy of a wide-open mouth, and decided to gather various over images and rip them up into small squares and drop them onto the mouth randomly. The act of ripping up images which clearly represented something into small pieces makes the images lose their meaning, since it can not be seen what the original images were from the pieces that remain. I did this because it parallels with the idea that oversaturation can make images lose their meaning/significance. The small torn pieces of the images are insignificant, but they still contain information – visual information, but information that is fragmentary and out of context. They have colour and shape and texture and pieces of forms within, but we do not know what they relate to and they have no significance to us. I gathered these fragments in a large mouth to relate that these pieces of insignificant information may be what people are consuming online.
I decided to continue this process for my final piece. Since the final outcome was to be a flipbook or gif/video of an animation, I needed to think about movement. I imagined that the torn pieces could move in a wave or ocean-like motion as this would relate it back to “Warm, Warm, Warm Spring Mouths” where the character lives at the bottom of the ocean. I also imagined that the movement could simulate noise or the static that could be found on old TV screens.
The images that I ripped up for the initial collage with the mouth, I used only because it was convenient. For my final piece I wanted to make the imagery more appropriate and relevant to the subject matter. So I decided that for my final piece I would source images online, searching for popular images, and subjects, visiting various social media sites, and collecting a wide range of imagery to show what media was actually being consumed online.
I went online to search for images to print out and rip up into small pieces. I searched for as many different subject matters as I could, and searched for the most popular images, and what was most popular/most viewed/most liked on various social media sites. I collected some images randomly and some images that I felt represented common or popular themes online. I ended up gathering 486 images – a testament to and fulfilment of oversaturation in itself. I printed out roughly 200 of these and proceeded to tear them up into small squares. Once I had torn all of the images up, I spread out all the pieces evenly and took photographs of them as I moved them around. I decided to move the pieces randomly so that when the photographs were collated into a flipbook and/or gif it would give the impression of static. I did this partly because it adds to the idea of the individual fragments of images being insignificant as their movement is also insignificant, and partly because moving the pieces in an ocean-like manner would be very difficult as it would be hard to keep track of which pieces had moved where. To move the pieces randomly I gathered them all up into a pile and then spread them out into different directions, and then repeated for every frame.
I decided I wanted to make both a physical and digital flipbook to see which was most effective. So I printed out all of the photographs I had taken (49 in total) and bound them with a bulldog clip. I also put all of the photographs into photoshop and made a gif from them. I feel that the gif is much more effective than the physical flipbook. With the gif the movement of the pieces actually looks like static, whereas with the physical flipbook it all looks like a blur because the eye can not focus on anything in particular long enough for each page. Within the gif the images stay still for a short amount of time and then move onto the next, whereas in the flipbook the pages are constantly moving and the eye is trying to connect all of the information on the pages together into one sequence. This is different to the gif because the images are displayed one after the other and the only expectation of the eye is to see it. The gif gives an illusion of movement or static, but the flipbook gives no illusion, they are more like separate but similar images in a book; there is little to no flow.
The gif can be somewhat mesmeric, it plays on a loop forever showing unfamiliar arrangements of colours and shapes, moving in unfamiliar ways – they are “moving” at all. It is unlikely that you could recognise any of the individual frames, and so to the viewer it could look like it keeps changing; that all the frames are different and that it does not loop. It creates an endless space which is hard for the eye and brain to comprehend and so can also be painful or unsettling or nauseating to look at. A viewer could use the phrase “what am I looking at?” to describe it, one which I have also heard people say about “Warm, Warm, Warm Spring Mouths”, and so they relate aesthetically and conceptually in that they can both be unsettling and confusing. Although this does not mean that they are unsettling for the same reasons; “Warm, Warm, Warm Spring Mouths” can also be unsettling because the representation of the character as a highly rendered nearly human looking digital avatar is uncanny.
Since my final work is based so strongly on ideas and since that is not apparent when viewing it without any prior knowledge of it, I think that ideally it should be accompanied by a description. In retrospect, I should have included a description on the physical flipbook, perhaps on the back cover or on one of the inside covers. A description would have been useful for those who view it and wonder why it looks the way it does and was invested enough to find out more information about it. However I did include a link to my blog which documents and explains my process, and so they could find the information there if they so wished.
The main audience for my flipbook would be the same as “Warm, Warm, Warm Spring Mouths”, which I imagine to be arts aware adults and young urbanites and students. This is due to intensity and adult or complex themes, that would be unsuitable or distressing for young children and which may not interest or affect other audiences.
To improve my work I would have tested different ways of making the physical more effective, one of which could have been to have spread the torn pieces over a solid colour background and then frame by frame have all of the pieces gather into the middle and compress into a ball. That could work better for a flipbook as it is a more linear and easily visible motion – the pages could be flipped quickly and it would be apparent to the eyes what is happening. I would have also printed off more imagery, ripped them up, and spread them out over a larger area and either photographed them or glued them down to create a large single frame image. The size of this image could be similar to the screen that “Warm, Warm, Warm Spring Mouths” was displayed on; large and somewhat daunting. I would have also liked to further explore editing the frames digitally (which I started to do and included in my blog).

Because I had to reduce the number of frames for the gif I uploaded, I thought I would produce a short video showing all of the frames of my final work. This is slower than the gif and probably doesn’t hurt the eyes as much. It may be slightly too slow as it it less like static this way and feels like it’s “jumping” from one frame to the next when maybe it should feel like a constant barrage of imagery.

This is my physical flipbook in action. I printed out the photographs that I took of the ripped up pieces, cut them to matching sizes and bound them with a bulldog clip. I don’t think that it works well as a physical flipbook and that it works much better as a gif. It doesn’t flow very well as the eye can’t follow from one image to the next coherently when it’s in this format. Each page just looks like a separate image unrelated but similar looking to the last. When it’s flipped quickly all that can be seen is a blur of colour (which may be seen as a further negation of significance) as the eye can’t focus properly on the images and doesn’t know how to simulate any sort of movement (which is the function of a flipbook). To improve it I could use the pieces on a plain coloured background and move them around on it in coherent shapes so that there is some contrast and something for the eyes to focus on.

This is the gif I produced from my photographs of all the ripped up pieces of images sourced online spread out and moved randomly (it’s actually a smaller version of the final gif becuase tumblr has a limit on gif file sizes). It does look somewhat like static on a TV, which was intended, and so I would say is successful. But the random arrangements of the pieces and the colours seem to make shapes and the illusion of movements - like optical illusions. For instance I can see some swirling motions of the black and white pieces. For the most part my eyes don’t know where to look, and it can make me feel a bit sick if I look for too long. Which funnily enough is how I felt after hours of trawling for source images. I feel that this is definitely appropriate for representing oversaturation - it is too much for the eyes, and no significance can be gleaned from it or the individual pieces that constitute it.

I used the online software Mosh again to edit some of the frames of my final piece. I did this partly out of experimentation, partly curiosity, partly as a way further distort that which has already been distorted (the original images I sourced have been distorted by me ripping them up), and partly because it is an incredibly easy and quick way to produce imagery and so an effective way to saturate my work with images. Also, to further distort I edited some of the images that I had already edited so that almost nothing of the original composition can be seen. I feel that some of these distortions (and the act of distortion itself) gives the impression that the subject matter (in this case oversaturation) has a negative impact or that it has “gone too far”, in this case that saturation has gone too far. Although “too far” is a subjective judgement, and can not be applied on the whole unless the majority of people feel the same.

This is what 200 images look like ripped up into small pieces and spread out randomly. I spread them out randomly, took a photograph, rearranged them randomly and then took another photograph. I did this around 50 times to get enough frames for my flipbook. I imagine the result will look something like static on a TV screen, or an overwhelming oversaturated mess that will hurt the eyes. Both will work well for my theme.

I produced this prototype for my final flipbook as part of our Narrative Sequencing workshop with Joel Mercer. We were given small sticky note pads with which we could test how are physical flipbooks might look. Given the nature of my project and my process so far, I decided to rip up those sticky notes and create a small stop motion animation. I wanted to show them moving toward the centre and compacting together as this relates to the idea of everything becoming the same when media/information is oversaturated, and back to “Warm, Warm, Warm Spring Mouths” where everything is compressed by the pressure at the bottom of the ocean.
I think this is how I will produce my final flipbook and/or gif/video. I will probably gather all of the ripped up pieces of images that I’ve sourced online spread them out and photograph them as I move them in stop motion fashion.

To print some of the images I collected online I arranged them onto pages on Word. I thought that they only needed to be small since there were so many of them. I printed roughly 200 out of 486 images because I felt that this would be substantial enough when ripped up into small pieces. I printed them double-sided because when all the pieces are put together the paper will flip over and if they were printed single-sided a lot of what would be seen is plain white pieces which would go against the idea of oversaturation.

Titles of Source Images
These are the file names of all 486 images that I collected online.
I thought that it would be nice to share this and oversaturate my own blog with mostly irrelevant information.
I feel that this stream of “information” also fits in well with my work. And so I guess is also my work now.

I scanned in the grid which I drew the frames of my “z” animation on, cropped each frame on photoshop, then put them together into a short animation on premier. I think it works well, especially in the middle where there is movement but somewhat erratic and it looks like it’s so zoomed into the shape of the “Z” that we can barely tell what it’s actually doing or how it is moving. We are so close to the “z” that it becomes abstract, we lose context and our perspective seems limited and somewhat frustrating.

Sourcing Images
To source images to be ripped up into small pieces to represent the possible oversaturation of media online, I wanted to gather images with broad ranges of subject matters, but also include popular or most viewed images, and most popular subject matters. To do this I sourced some images from Google images, searching for general subjects such as “news”, “art”, “popular”, “funny”, “news”, “most viewed images”, “porn”, “food”, “animals”, “beautiful”, etc. I also sourced images that were most popular/most liked on social media networks like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest and Tumblr. I tried to be as unbiased as possible when choosing specific images (although some preconceptions and biases are unavoidable), and tried to just reflect what was most popular or prevalent online, and tried to pick only a few examples from each different subject matter and tried to include a broad range of imagery.

We had a Visual Narrative workshop  with Steve Chamberlain in which we were given these grids and shown how we could quickly and easily make a short animation with them. We were asked to start and end with the letter “z” so that everybody’s animations could be woven together. For my animation I decided to create something quite noisy, and in his presentation Steve showed us some of his own work and how he would sometimes overlap on the frames and use a sheet like this as an art object as a whole. I felt this was a very inventive and interesting idea and included elements of this in my own quick animation to see how it would turn out.

Google results for “oversaturation”
(see source #2). Our final example is Facebook, whilst it is clear that almost everyone with access to a computer uses Facebook (which means that a wide variety of businesses can market themselves on the platform), it should been kept in mind that consumers don’t necessarily want to see an over-saturation of content, so even on this platform it’s important to be considerate of your audience.
saturation [sach-uh-rey-shuh n] Spell  Syllables Word Origin noun 1. the act or process of saturating. 2. the state of being saturated. 3. Meteorology. a condition in the atmosphere corresponding to 100 percent relative humidity.
15516 GIFs found for oversaturation is still the name of the game
The director discussed why he doesn’t see a lot of films these days during a press conference for his new film, Silence.
“There’s over saturation,” he told an audience of reporters, “particularly in our world as it is now and nothing really does have a meaning.
“Images for example are everywhere. Cinema used to be in a building and even on television, you’d see a film or whatever.
“I must say a lot of the films that I’m aware of…and I don’t see that many new ones over the past two or three years, I stopped because the images don’t mean anything.”
But there's a fine line between healthy competition and oversaturation of a marketplace.
Are oversaturation and supersaturation the same or different concepts? Chemistry 2 Answers

tlee  Share Feb 18, 2016 Answer: They are different... Explanation: Oversaturated solutions mean a solvent has been more than fully saturated with a solute (e.g. salt water that has moved past the point of saturation and excess salt piles on the bottom of the container). Supersaturation is the process that takes the oversaturated mixture and creates more space between the solvent particles (through heating it up) to allow more solute to fit between the "excited particles" (have more kinetic energy, they collide with more energy, and create more space). By doing so, the oversaturated solution becomes "saturated", but with more solute than would normally be between the solvent particles (at room temperature) - hence "supersaturation".
How does the superhero onslaught figure in this? Will oversaturation kill a golden goose that neglects other worthy projects? Or will studios find an endless appetite for pretend world-saving heroes as we look for escapism from the real terrors like ISIS and Ebola?

 How important is duration?
Recently I went to China to play beach volleyball. While I was there I noticed the Chinese approach to marketing clothes, products, and services was very aggressive — products and services were constantly ‘in your face’. The supermarkets in particular were particularly fascinating – aisles upon aisles of products and signage, consumers hit with marketing messages when they least expected it. So much so I felt overwhelmed by all of the advertising, and anytime I ventured into a commercial area I felt a real urgency to get out of there asap. Lately this is how I have also felt in a number of social media networks I have joined. The overload of advertising messages and spam is encouraging me to disengage more often. Rather than having to deal with spam, I am culling a large number of followers or disconnecting from people who have ‘signed me up’ to marketing material without my consent.
