Well, I'm lazy so I usually go by the popularity first and then on the examples in the docs. No examples or hard to read docs, then I'm on to the next in the npm search.
I will also see what packages are being used by packages I am already using. One of my favorite things about Nodejs.
How do you choose packages?
As of the moment I’m posting this, there are 136,525 packages (no, wait, 136,544 packages) available on npm. That’s a whole lot of packages.
One of the things we’ll be working on this year is making it easier to find the packages that are useful to you. We’re wondering, how do you choose the ones that you want to use?

Fascinating! My first thought was '23 without shelter? Why don't the 77 give them some?'
