Yelena: Are you alright? You didn’t sleep at all last night.
Bob: I got a solid eight minutes.
Bob: Not consecutively but it’s still fine. You’re not even that blurry.

It’s five am and I just made myself cry thinking about this so now you all get to hear about it.
So basically, the premise is basically an AU where SHEILD are extremely evil towards Steve, Nat, Clint, and Bruce. I’m not sure how this would work with Clint and Nat, but paperworkwise Steve and Bruce would be considered not human and thus not having any rights (at least behind closed doors in Steve’s case). Tony does not know this, until after the invasion, JARVIS informs Tony of his teammates’ legal status (or lack thereof) and he trades some tech and a shit ton of money for the transfer of ownership (or whatever it would be called to sound a bit less like literal slavery — SHEILD would have definitely picked something nicer sounding).
So with this, it would lead to a very angsty and delicious mix of slavefic (one of my favorite hurt/comfort genres and I’m not sorry about that) and 2012 era tower fic (the best fic).
So here is what I was thinking for each character and how that specific trauma would translate into their new life in the tower
Natasha was severely overworked at SHEILD, sent on missions while exhausted and still injured without a single break. She has no idea that this isn’t normal, because the Red Room and the KGB did the same thing. -> The day after she moves into the tower, she’s still hurt from the last mission she went on, but she still reports to Tony asking for the dossier on her next mission and casually asking if she could maybe say goodbye to the others before leaving, while actively walking on crutches. This serves as Tony’s first glimpse into what conditions at SHEILD were really like.
In this AU SHEILD outright captured Bruce some time well before the invasion and had been sporadically running experiments on him, but mostly just leaving him to rot alone in a reinforced bunker miles underground. -> Bruce in his (self) hatred of the Hulk, found that extremely logical, and so is skeptical when Tony gives him a regular room just the same as the others. But the real surprise is when Tony not only allows, but invites Bruce down to his lab, not to be the subject of experiments, but a colleague. None of it makes sense to Bruce, but the mental stimulation feels so good he doesn’t have the willpower to look this gift horse in the mouth.
Bc of Steve’s high caloric requirements, SHEILD would have developed this like disgusting gray paste for him to eat, and wouldn’t have wasted any real food on him. By the time he gets to the tower, he hadn’t eaten more than a few bites of real food in a year. -> Tony gives him nutrient rich bars to tide him between meals and Steve assumes that, like before, this will be all he’s allowed to eat. When the team sits down for their first team dinner and not only is given a portion like everyone else, but offered seconds and then dessert, he just barely avoids having a breakdown in front of everyone. Afterwards, he goes to see Tony, thanking him, and Tony is seriously considering decking Fury.
But the worst by far is Clint. You see, someone somewhere along the line decided that any type of misstep on a mission should lead to severe physical repercussions — torture, we’re talking about torture, although no SHEILD prison would every use that word to talk about Clint’s… special discipline procedures. Specifically, the most common punishment (although there were others used semi-frequently as well) they used on him was to break his fingers as to make archery and shooting a gun painful and humiliating. There was a hierarchy too, based on which finger and at which joint would correspond to the level of fuck up. -> Clint knows he probably won’t survive the punishment that’s coming to him after the shitshow that was the invasion. He was mind controlled, and turned against his orders and Earth, and that was unforgivable, and he doesn’t know why Tony is waiting to dish it out, but he’s savoring the relief while he can. Finally, Tony tells Clint to come down to the workshop (Tony wants to show him a new arrow design he’s working on, but Clint doesn’t know that), and yk what, I actually have this scene pretty well worked out so here it is:
Clint: *presents his hands, fingers spread as is procedure*
Tony: *confusion* “whatcha doin’ birdie?”
Clint, nearly hyperventilating in fear by now: “please, break as many as I deserve, but I swear I can still be usefu-“
Tony: “I’m not breaking your fingers jfc”
Clint, somehow even more panicked: “please, not my arm, please-“
Tony: “Clint!”
They both freeze, holding the moment still for a beat
Tony, softer: “I’m not going to hurt you, at all, ever. Why- why would you think I’d do something so horrific? Have I said something or…”
Clint, barely whispering at this point, knowing he owes Tony an explanation at the bare minimum for all this mercy and kindness: “I’m too stupid to be taught any other way, at least, that’s what they told me, and I s’pose it’s probably true. Pain in how I’ve always learned.”
Tony, immediate clocking that bs: “that’s bullshit- no, just listen for a sec. When you’re taking out enemies with that ancient tech, your brain is making a thousand calculations a second without you even being conscious of it, all to line up the perfect shot. Whoever told you otherwise was just looking for an excuse to hurt you, but I promise you, none of that will happen here. You’re safe.”
Bonus misc scene ideas:
On move in, Tony, or rather JARVIS since Tony is down on the lab, directs the four up to their floor. Each one opens the door to the room that’s for them and has a reaction (since SHEILD housing was a tiny blank gray room). Each had a reason to believe that Tony would hate them specifically (Clint for being mind controlled, Nat for infiltrating SI, Steve for what he said on the helicarrier, and Bruce just for being the Hulk no matter what Tony had said) and so finding their designated quarters spacious and cozy (normal fucking suites), it’s their first sign that maybe, just maybe, being owned by Tony might be alright.
Both Nat and Clint offer themselves sexually to Tony at some point, anything to win his favor right?
Tony gets JARVIS to hack into SHEILD and erase whatever records their have declaring the four not entitled to human rights, and presents them with their document packets to great emotion (if this were to be written fic, this would be the finale chapter)
I’ll be honest I completely forgot about Thor, but I think it would be cool if some time during Thor 1, he was captured and kept by SHEILD for a period of time, and got to more extensively talk to Clint about his life and why SHEILD totally sucked. After he goes back to Asgard after the invasion, he learns of what has happened with the other Avengers, and pays them a visit to check if Tony is being a dick or not
Natasha saying to Tony late one night in a moment of vulnerability (you can’t convince me that in a scenario like this she wouldn’t have become Tony’s confidant when he’s in over his head with the others) “SHEILD will ask for us back, at some point, at the very least they’ll want to lease us out. You can say no, and… we’d be loyal, obedient. You couldn’t ask for better agents at your beck and call, I swear, we’d be so grateful not to go back there…” and Tony assuring her that he has no intentions of letting SHEILD get their grubby hand on his team
Another Nat quote: “SHEILD is an organization with a noble and righteous cause, but it is rotten from the inside out.”
Needless to say, it’s not a surprise when the whole HYDRA reveal happens
I’ve been viewing this all through a platonic (albeit very codependent) lens, but could very easily be polyavengers
