you knew steve was in love with nancy wheeler, how could he not? however, you couldn’t bring yourself to tell him, because you would rather have one-sided love than no love at all.

you couldn’t avoid it any longer. especially because an earthquake started in the upside down and he lunged toward nancy before you. after that, you walked behind the rest of the group, needing alone time to brainstorm a way to bring this up to steve.

“y/n are you alright?” robin questioned. you saw the worry in her eyes when she kept looking back at you, but you told yourself, we’re in the upside down, i doubt anyone’s biggest issue is my failing relationship.

“yeah, fine,” you muttered, fearing that if you spoke any louder the tears forming in your eyes would start to fall.

your group had somehow escaped the upside down without any casualties, but if by any chance you didn’t make it, you needed steve to know how you felt.

“steve?” you called to get his attention.

“hm?” he responds.

“is there something going on between you and nancy again?”

“no, will everybody please stop asking me that?!” he whisper-shouted, not wanting anyone else to pick up on your conversation.

“oh don’t bullshit me steve.”

“what do you mean, ‘bullshitting’ you?” he puts in air quotes.

“so we’re going to act like you haven’t been looking at her like she puts the stars in the damn sky?”

“i-“

“or how you reached for her instead of me?” you interrupt, because no explanation could help him right now.

“listen y/n, i’m sorry.”

the last bit of hope that you were wrong, that he was all yours and never her’s was destroyed, “don’t be sorry, it’s not your fault you love her. honestly, it’s more my fault, i stayed with you while knowing.”

“how long have you known?” he asks, running a hand through his hair then down his face.

“i don’t know, you’ve never really lost feelings for her though.” the tears you’d managed to keep in were starting to run down your cheeks.

“i should’ve been honest though.”

“you’re right, you should’ve, and i shouldn’t have been such a fucking idiot.”
