i've always headcanoned Hunter as the best at hand-to-hand combat in CF99. i wonder if this means it might actually be Tech?? or does Hunter still have an edge because of repetition? (ie. he engages in it way more often than Tech does, because Tech prefers to use blasters first and foremost.)

Sorry, friends, I'm going to be going on about Sanctuary for a WHILE and this entire page has been living rent-free in my head ever since I read it yesterday: (spoiler images below the cut)

Not only did we get TechPhee, but we also got even more of Tech proving beyond ANY doubt just how physically capable he is!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Also I can just HEAR him delivering his "You did say that" to Parlin in the most casual, unconcerned tone known to man, and it makes me giggle so hard 😂

so Sanctuary reminded us how extremely adept Tech is at close quarters combat, using his knowledge to strike at the weak points and he's taught himself and mastered fourteen (14) forms of unarmed combat...

thanks for those screenshots!! i never noticed the differences in Lower Pabu!

i, too, used to assume it was only a week or so that passes from 2.13 to 2.14... so the novel saying the sea surge was "last month" threw me off. but it makes sense now. (still no firm timeline, so my new assumption is anywhere between 1-2 months at most.)

A few characterization points that I thought were pretty well established in the show and were also reinforced in Sanctuary: (spoilers below the cut)

- Hunter is SO STRESSED OUT, even more so now, but he tries so hard to lock it all in/up/down for his siblings' sake... but they all know. They all know. (Dude just needs a break, but he can never get one 😭)

- Hunter knows his family is capable, but he still feels responsible for them. And he really is an excellent leader - though it also means, again, that he takes on too much personal responsibility for their welfare.

- Omega LOVES adventure, LOVES traveling, LOVES exploring and seeing new things. (Even more crushing to realize the trauma of losing Tech [temporarily because he's coming back of course] is what leads to her agreeing with Hunter - and, by that point, Wrecker - about actually settling down permanently on Pabu.)

- Wrecker doesn't mind being a soldier - he'll just go wherever he's needed, and his family needs him so he'll go wherever they are.

- Tech's combat prowess in "Ruins of War" was NOT, in fact, a fluke. As he himself says, "While my brothers and I each have our specialties, the things we're best at, relatively speaking, each of us is good at everything."

- TECHPHEE IS CANON!!! ❤️❤️❤️ They like each other a lot and they both flirt in their own unique ways and Tech has no idea how to tell her how he feels because he's still analyzing it all himself and I love them so much!!!

- Phee really is a trustworthy pirate and don't you dare mess with her friends because she will take it personally.

- As an aside - I've seen some fans speculate only a week passes between "Pabu" and "Tipping Point." There's not been much before now to prove anything different, though I've personally always assumed at least a few weeks, maybe even more than a month, had elapsed. The timing in this novel, however, seems to indicate that at least a few weeks pass before we get to the events of the latter half of "Tipping Point"... Meaning Crosshair is captive on Tantiss for a while before they discover his message 🥺

- As another aside - I think Hunter relied on Echo a lot. Like, A LOT. (No wonder he is wound so tight during the events of this book.)

Phee translated, "Ground crew's saying we should let the storm pass. Could be three days." Hunter's response was inappropriate and colorful. MEL-222 chirped an extended indignant tone. "I will not apologize," Hunter said, directing his ire at Phee. "This is all your fault. We never should've agreed to any of this!" "Any of what?" Omega asked, her arms crossed.

so Hunter swears in front of Omega. and with zero concern. lol

favourite Hunter quotes & moments from Sanctuary:

so he hates... prepping food?? being in the kitchen?? cooking in general?? rip to anyone who headcanoned otherwise lol

[Hunter] never took a dressing-down well, even when deserved. ^ i love this. those little signs of his TCW ego still present.

While the droid took issue with Hunter's blade work—something no one else had ever questioned and lived to tell...

Hunter wearing makeup to cover his face tattoo is now a canon event. excellent. need official artwork of this.

Instead of stating the obvious—that Hunter's natural disposition was not well suited for the social aspects of an undercover job...

[Hunter] never did his best thinking in briefings. He preferred being on the move, in the elements, where his senses could stretch. ^ makes perfect sense and i love this little tidbit

so Hunter dreams about Crosshair often. and he even goes as far to say that Crosshair's chipless, willing choice to join the Empire feels worse to Hunter than the actual Jedi purge. (sounds cold at first, but makes sense honestly. Hunter's chip never activated and he never got to know any Jedi personally—whereas his team was everything to him.)

Phee: "You're catastrophizing, aren't you?" Hunter: "I'm...no." ^ another favourite Hunter moment. it's very him.

However, Hunter's thinking could also be unyielding, as if there were only one way—his way—to tackle any given problem.

confirmation that Hunter was wound tight and quite moody after Echo left and things went sour with Cid. to the point everyone else was just waiting and praying for his bad mood to blow over soon.

"How are we supposed to know the stress of space won't... activate [the baby/birth]?" HUNTER OH MY GOD

Phee's joke about Hunter's School for Wayward Children. 11/10 A+++ no notes. confirmed he's just a dad collecting every kid he sees.

how everyone, even Omega, was pretty "meh ok sure i guess" about staying on Pabu more permanently, but Hunter was really thinking about it hard and wanted it from early on.

Could he understand the desperate drive to do the unthinkable for someone you loved? There was never a time he couldn't. ^ i'm going to fucking cry

just. the Crosshair dream. i have no words, only ugly sobbing 😭😭

this part had me giggling. but i just realized it can be interpreted with double meaning?

"Always [room for another]" sounds like foreshadowing, or setting up, for how Phee easily embraces Crosshair coming back to the team in S3.

"There used to be four of them" could also be a sly Crosshair reference. (or for Echo.)
