The revised version made me think of an AU where they meet in Xianle when they're both teen, Xie Lian as a prince and Hua Cheng as a young noble who's an absolute menace. More of my insanity in the tags

Xie Lian is such a fun character because he is fucking terrifying. Like he can fight normal martial gods with two cursed shackles and deflect an attack from E-Ming. It’s so funny to me that a lot of characters in the story mischaracterise him like - “your highness that’s too powerful you don’t have a spiritual weapon!!” And Xie Lian just goes “no worries” and solos them with Rouye.
The only character who treats Xie Lian like he can take care of himself is Hua Cheng, but he also wants to protect him - not because Xie Lian can’t protect himself, but because Hua Cheng just wants him to take it easy and chill out. Xie Lian lets him fight for him because he knows it makes him feel better (and he looks kinda hot when he fights).
but he’s so scary and everybody just forgets all the time I find it sooo funny
I feel like it’s mostly because of his intense stubbornness and refusal to lose, which means he’s built up a lot of skill over 800 years (especially in using his own body without relying on spiritual power). He also just bounces back and takes injuries like a pro - I feel like u have to tho if you’ve had as many as him.
So essentially, Xie Lian is the scariest but he’s too sweet to just fight with people, meanwhile Hua Cheng would love to protect his Gege because it makes him feel like he has a purpose.

Obsession in TGCF is Beautiful
TGCF is the first story I’ve read that portrays obsession as something healing and sincere. As someone who struggles with borderline, it became a beacon of hope for me.
Xie Lian and Hua Cheng are dependent on each other. That mutual dependency comes from the same place (what makes them so alike) even if it’s separated by 800 years.
Little Hong Hong’er was lonely, lost, and wronged by the world. Xie Lian became the one who gave him purpose—not just to live and die for, but to defy fate itself, to rewrite his story, to conquer luck.
Eight hundred years later, Xie Lian was also lonely, lost, and wronged by the world. But he was also tired and defeated. Unlike Hua Cheng, he had no one to live for during those 800 years. He had no reason.
Not long ago, I got into an argument with a classmate. She got upset when I said that another person could be our meaning in life. She wanted me to change my mind. But I, just like Xie Lian in the final battle, wanted to scream, “I won’t change! I will never change!”
And I still stand by that.
Yes, when you grow up in a safe environment, when people treat you well, it’s easier to build your own support system. But when someone broke you a long time ago—and no one helped you—it’s hard to even want to move forward.
Just like Hong Hong’er back then, Xie Lian needed someone he could rely on. The more damage someone carries, the more they need comfort. They need someone who’s always there.
That’s why Xie Lian is so clingy in the extras. He needs Hua Cheng more than anything, and he can’t handle being apart from him. I think his dependency is even deeper than Hua Cheng’s.
Hua Cheng had 800 years of unwavering faith in his god. He held onto hope that one day, he’d find him again. Meanwhile, Xie Lian believed it was his punishment to wander the world in solitude forever.
It’s not just love that defies heaven and earth—it’s obsession. Obsession made love stronger. And I think that’s beautiful.
That’s why TGCF could never be written by a Western author.
We’re constantly told not to confess too early, not to call too often, not to love too intensely. Otherwise, we’ll be labeled a stalker, or worse, the “crazy girlfriend with borderline” (which I fucking am).
And you know what?
That mindset doesn’t make relationships better. It makes them disappear. We become cold, pragmatic, and emotionally distant. We don’t trust people. We stop believing in love. We end up lonely and lost.
But even when I’ve been wronged by the world, even when I’m exhausted and defeated, I’m still waiting for someone to save me.
Even if it takes 800 years.
I believe.

My heart just wants to burst every single time I see this picture of him. He was always smiling in his San Lang/Xiao Hua form, but in season two, we didn’t really get a chance to see any genuine soft smiles from his true form considering the events of that arc. Sarcastic smiles? Amused smiles? Menacing smiles? Dangerous smiles? Sure. But soft? Married life is treating him so well <3

something something xie lian using humor to cope is actually self soothing behavior because he doesn't know how to process his grief without feeling like he's burdening others, something something mxtx purposely writing his narration of the story in the book as a downplay of the actual horrors of xianle until it's fully revealed because said self soothing has made him learn to not take things too seriously to avoid having to think about the past too hard
