Julian’s Mini Essay
The issues that are seen in Romeo and Juliet are common to issues today. One example is the feud between the Capulets and the Montagues. “Two households, both alike in dignity (In fair Verona, where we lay our scene), From ancient grudge break to new mutiny, Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean. (Prologue.1-4). “ This is a good example of how modern feuds work between countries, one country does something to another country that was bad but happened a very long time ago so the people who carry out the grudge barely remember what it is much less were there to see it. Another example of how Romeo and Juliet relates to modern times is how Romeo feels after he breaks up with Rosaline “Out of her favor, where I am in love  (1.1.168-173).”  In this quote Romeo is brooding about how he misses Rosaline even though she never really liked him in the first place. This is how most teens feel when they break up with someone they “love” and they thought “loved” them back when really what happened was one person liked the other, but the other person had no interest in the first person. When the first person realizes that they tricked themselves they go into a state of depression and can’t think of anything but the person they thought they loved. The last reason Romeo and Juliet relates to modern times is because people still do crazy and stupid things for what they think they love. Romeo thinks Juliet is dead so he decides to kill himself which, let’s face it isn’t worth dying for, but he does it anyway and while he dies he kisses her. “Come, bitter conduct, come, unsavoury guide. Thou desperate pilot, now at once run on The dashing rocks thy seasick, weary bark. Here’s to my love! (drinks the poison) O true apothecary, Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss (5.3.126-131).”

Conor’s Mini Essay
In the Story Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, there are many connections that can be made to modern life. From Juliet's parental issues, to Romeo's social ostracization, to the overly humorous nature of Mercutio, there are a lot of analogous situations.
In the story, Juliet angers her father by marrying Romeo (without his knowledge) instead of Paris. This is like the modern stereotype about young, rebellious, teenage girls dating the "bad boy" instead of the nice, smart boy. Obviously, Romeo doesn't smoke or ride a motorcycle, but he is a bit more rebellious. At least, he's rebellious compared to Paris, who is quite literally royalty.
Another possible analogy is Romeo being ostracized from his social group. His friends are like the average edgy teens, who make jokes and pretend like feelings don't exist. Romeo, on the other hand, is more honest with his feelings. Although, sometimes, he can be a little too honest. He went after Rosaline so much, that when he didn't get her, he got made fun of a lot by Mercutio. He's the butt of the joke most of the time, because his friends think he's "girly" and "weak".
A third situation in Romeo and Juliet that could be connected to modern life, is Mercutio's humorous nature. Most teens are constantly cracking inappropriate jokes. Most kids nowadays wouldn't lift up a woman's dress like Mercutio (which would be considered sexual assault), but they would make fun of each other like Mercutio makes fun of Romeo.
In conclusion, Romeo and Juliet is surprisingly very similar to modern life. Juliet has issues with her parents, like an edgy teenage girl. Romeo gets made fun of by his friends, like many kids today. Mercutio is always making jokes, some of which are very inappropriate, like many people do today. Arlington, Virginia may not be like Verona, Italy, but many of the situations can be connected.

Sumayah’s Mini Essay
There aren't that many struggles and stressful situations that teens have that Romeo and Juliet did but there are some that many teens can relate to. Most teens don't always agree with their parent’s choices because at this stage in their life teens want freedom and want to be independent and make their own choices. Juliet felt the same when she said “ Now, by Saint Peter’s Church and Peter too, He shall not make me there a joyful bride. I wonder at this haste, that I must wed …. I pray you, tell my lord and father, madam, I will not marry yet.”(5,5,16-25). She is saying she wants the freedom to marry someone she actually loves. Of course teens nowadays don't need to worry about arranged marriages but the struggle to have freedom is the same. Parental relationships are hard on teens too. We try to have a good relationship with our parents but our feelings at this stage of our lives push them back.  Romeo has a good relationship with his parents because they are not very overprotective of him as Juliet is with her parents. Nowadays parents are still overprotective and this causes teens to have less freedom and causes a unhealthy relationship with parents. Romeo has the freedom to walk around in the streets and the woods and his parents wouldn't mind, I believe this is because of Romeo being male and women need to be protected more often than males and this might also be the case nowadays too. Many teens have self confidence and high hopes for things they really want like Romeo and Juliet wanting to be together but the hate of their families keeping them apart. Teens want to be in control of their own lives and parents should let them. Juliet’s parents just could not wrap their heads around why or how Juliet could ever take control of her life.

Taha’s Mini Essay
One of the most important conflicts or issues from Romeo and Juliet that connect to modern times is the concept of love. Love is something that’s truly endless and everlasting. The meaning of love that we know today, was the same type of love that’s existed for thousands of years. That’s why it’s easy for people like us to understand the relationship between Romeo and Juliet. It’s nothing sophisticated and it’s not like anyone hasn’t experienced love. Every single person knows what it’s like to love and be loved. Another conflict that connects to modern times, is the constant fighting and war. Fighting doesn’t bring about peace. As long as there's fighting, peace will never be found. There was a lot of fighting in the past and when we look back, fighting didn’t really do anything beneficial, but rather it just spread bloodshed. What we learn for ourselves from these conflicts or issues, is not to make the same mistakes as the people before us made. if you are inflicted with some sort of pain than don’t make it any worse than it already is. For example, when Romeo found out that Mercutio has been killed, he charged at Tybalt and “accidentally” kills him. That made the situation worse for him and his family. Another lesson may perhaps be to never force marriage. Juliet’s parents (mainly her father) want her to get married to Paris, meanwhile she herself prefers to marry Romeo instead. She has no interest in Paris what so ever, and her heart has love for Romeo and Romeo only. The problem is that she can’t bring herself to proclaim these words in front of her parents, because they’re has been constant fighting between The Montagues and Capulets. There’s also the possibility that Romeo might die at the hands of over own family and that thought terrifies her immensely.

Conor’s Blog (Romeo)
Having the worst #monday ever. My boi @mercutio died, I got exiled for killing @tybalt, and now my 🅱️🅱️, @juliet, is dead. Some of you might say we didn't know each other well enough, but hey, haters gonna hate. It's not even fair that I got exiled. Tybalt literally killed my best friend, so I did the completely rational thing, and killed him back. I mean, Manchua's ok, I guess. It's not a cool as Verona. Verona's litty. When we're not killing each other, the city is pretty beautiful. Oh, I almost forgot about the main thing. Juliet is dead. My boi Balthazar told me that he saw them putting her into the Capulet family tomb. #represent #montague. @lordcapulet means nothing to me, now that Juliet is dead. I'm finna go to the tomb and kill myself. Hope Juliet doesn't magically wake up right after I do it. lmao 🅱️. that would be funny. At least I have my boi @benvolio. lol that guy's a big ol' weenie. He tryna stop the fighting lol. Dude, it's never gonna happen. Oh, and @rosaline, you missed your chance. You ain't getting none of this. Don't @ me. P.S. the prince is my #mancrushmonday.

Julian’s Blog (Romeo)
Dear Diary:  I can’t believe I got tricked by my wife! She pretended to be dead so she wouldn’t have to marry Paris, which is good, but then she forgot to tell me she was pretending to be dead. When I saw her on that slab I thought a kiss would bring her back, However this is real life and she was still dead. I then proceeded to drink poison and kill myself. Then she had the audacity to wake up from the slab and walk over to me. That plan worked great note to self make sure you just stay with Rosaline. Juliet is just too much trouble no matter how thicc she is. I now know how sneaky those Capulets can be and i'm glad I killed tybalt. Mercutio would be very proud but he’s dead too. I now know why that random voice was saying that the two lovers would die… I wonder who that was anyway. No matter what my personal feelings about my death I’m still glad that the conflict between our family has ended. I am also having wild mood swings in death I don’t know why.
PS I still love you Juliet even though you are the person who got me killed. Also you’re a thot

Sumayah’s Blog (Tybalt)
I believe there is something going on between that boy Romeo and dear cousin Juliet. I don't trust that boy, he will cause trouble and misery to come upon the Capulets. It's strange, I believe I am starting to have a liking on that Mercutio despite that he is a Montague. I hear Lord and Lady Capulet are arranging a marriage for cousin Juliet and Paris. I envy Paris very much because he will soon be king and rule us all. Oh she shall make a wonderful wife to him and bring much happiness to the Capulets. If there is something going on between that bastard Romeo and my dear cousin Juliet, then that should solve that problem. Speaking of Romeo, he is being awfully nice to me, even though I treated him like dirt. I even bit my tongue at him a few times and he still greets me with a smile and a handshake calling me his cousin. I wonder what has gotten him to perk up so suddenly. Lord and Lady were very wise as to have locked her up and not let her leave Capulet territory. After catching Romeo and his friends at the party the Capulets don't know if we can trust them walking around on our land, our property, with such pride that they think they are above us all.

Taha’s Blog (Lord Capulet)
I am Lord Capulet, the leader of the Capulet household, and I shall always have things flow accordingly to my agenda. Paris, why have you come? Paris says, “To ask for your daughter’s hand in marriage.”. I said “She is only thirteen years old, and far too young to be your wife.” Paris was persistent and wasn’t taking no for an answer. He eventually was able to convince me into giving my daughter up to him. I shall always have the final judgement with regards to all affairs, I said to myself. Afterwards, I entered upon Juliet and said to her: you my beloved daughter, Juliet, are obligated to marry Paris. You’re mother and I know that Paris will be a good husband for you and he’ll make you so happy and pleased. Despite the actions that we take, we truly love you and want what is best for the family. Furthermore, no matter what you say, and no matter how hard you try to deny it, it is you’re destiny and you must accept it! As my daughter, the daughter of the chieftain of all Capulets, you will fulfill your destiny and marry him this upcoming Thursday! Do I make myself clear? No, says Juliet, no way! I will not accept him as my husband! Not now, not ever! Lord Capulet screams, "out, you baggage, / you tallow face" (3.5.161-162) and then he says (when Juliet stands up): "my fingers itch". I begin to assault her, and she falls to the ground. When I saw my wife and the nurse standing beside her to defend her, I threatened all of them. However, after I saw their pained faces, I calmed myself down and left Julliet alone, alone for her to get prepared for Thursday. After I left her chamber, I felt really frustrated and disappointed that she had rejected Paris’s proposal. I’m already enraged by Tybalt’s sudden death. I don’t want things to get worse. Juliet will marry Paris this Thursday, I said to myself. I will do whatever it means to ensure that happens!
