Just when I think Legolas and his role in the story couldn’t get any realer I remember that there are scenes after and during the Council of Elrond that imply that THIS conversation happened at some point post-council:
Legolas: I would like to volunteer to represent the Elves on the journey to Mount Doom.
High-up Elf Dudes: Well, ideally we would send an Elf of such power as to be useful on the journey, but any amount of Elvish awesomeness would draw the attention of Sauron. So the Elf that goes with them would have to be so weak and ordinary that the Dark Lord cannot possibly conceive any sane person sending such a loser on any important mission ever. What we really need is the least powerful and noticeable Elf we can find.
Legolas: …
High-up Elf Dudes: You’ll do perfectly, have a nice trip.

Being a member of both the academic Tolkien community and the Tumblr Tolkien community is so funny to me. Like, I just spent my weekend listening to some amazing talks on themes including ‘parallels between adaptations of Henry V and Return of the King’, ‘vulnerability and compassion in Tolkien artwork’, and ‘Tolkien’s myth making and dreams of Earendil.’ Even had the privilege of seeing an unpublished dialogue between Gandalf and Sam from the Marquette Collection 😍 And now I’ve come home, put on my Tumblr hat, and am reading posts about Russingon and Mirkwood divas and The Three Hunters polycule. I love that I can exist in both these worlds!

^^this. I know it’s not for everyone, but I LOVE modern takes on LoTR characters. The Aragorn in my current WIP is a retired combat medic turned forest ranger. He spends his free time volunteering as an EMT and taking care of his elderly neighbor. He loves romantic literature and is a closet Swiftie. He’s always kept his bisexuality hidden, until he meets Legolas, that is…
I think the reason I like modern aus so much is because it's immensely funny to give epic heros dumbass mundane problems. Aragorn, son of Arathorn, King of Gondor would have a poetry minor. He would do HEMA on the weekends. He thru hiked the Superior Hiking trail bc he was unemployed. He's in a polycule.

Will someone who makes coocoo clocks please make one with Aragorn at Helm’s Deep busting through the doors?
I was very disappointed to find that it hasn’t been done yet.

Legolas stood in the doorway of Aragorn’s chamber, arms crossed, his fair brows knitted. "Have my rooms been fixed yet?" he asked, his voice smooth as ever.
Aragorn, lounging lazily on the bed with a book in hand, barely glanced up. "Well... not really," he admitted, flipping a page with deliberate slowness while avoiding all eye contact possible. "There are some... details that still need to be... discussed."
"Details? Aragorn, it has been a month." His cheeks burned with the faintest blush. "I cannot keep sleeping here like this. It’s not... appropriate."
The last word came out in a soft whisper, his mind reminding him the images of waking up tangled in Aragorn’s arms, again, despite his best efforts to stay on his own side of the bed.
Aragorn finally looked up, his lips twitching into a smirk. "Be patient, mellon," he said, patting the space beside him. "Perhaps only a few more days. I’ll speak to Faramir tomorrow, I promise."
Legolas sighed. "Fine," he muttered, shuffling forward. "A few more days." Then slipped under the blankets.
Drifting into sleep, Legolas made a silent pray that he would wake up on his side of the bed. Probably...
Aragorn waited until Legolas’s breathing evened. With the slightest movement, he carefully pulled Legolas closer against his chest and pressing a light kiss to Legolas’s hair.
Hmm. Maybe the repairation could take… another week.
Or two.

If I was Denethor the second, Steward of Gondor I would not have sent my son to a council meeting to try and get a cursed ring- I would have sent both my sons out to Seduce Aragorn by any means necessary.
If I wanted the crown of Gondor and to secure leadership for my family for all time I would have said boys. Get out there. Make it happen. Fluff your beautiful shiny hair up. Make papa proud

Hiii and welcome to the fandom! There are SO. MANY. good Aralas fics, so apologies in advance for the length of this post! First off, I'm going to link you to maedhrosdefender's Aralas fic recs masterlist—these are truly some of the best Aralas fics out there, and I love every single one of them.
In addition, I recommend the following:
Series:

The above are all in-universe fics. If you like AU's, I recommend:
All of the While, It Was You by Nit_Nat (my very own coffee shop AU)
Killing Strangers by Laavu (a LotR/Fallout crossover, but you don't need to have any knowledge of Fallout)
Also, you really can't go wrong with any fic by the following authors:
Laavu

Lastly, if you don't already, I recommend following @vamp-ress on Tumblr, she regularly posts awesome fic recs.

Has anyone else noticed that Legolas never seems to sit down in the movies? The only time I can remember him sitting is at the council of Elrond. Well, author Erfaciel has a very fun oneshot that addresses the reason why…and the answer is enough to make even Gimli blush!
