Drawing Creatures and monsters
I very much enjoy drawing monsters, long and twisty ones. Though it isn’t a direct inspiration, I can definitely feel the vibe of mythology of the Wndigo and Peryton. I really like mythology and folklore. I have a book at home called the element encyclopaedia of magical creatures by Jone and Caitlin Matthewa. In the future I’m going to go through it and draw as many of them as I possibly can. It’s a super cool book. It’s also a good way of creating prompts for myself. Other books that that I think are aesthetically inspiring are - the art of the dragon by willshire Spurlock, a flower fairer treasury by Cicely Mary Barker and just about any book about animals.

Digital Art Skull and Owl
Hey everyone!! This artwork was quite exciting to complete. I’m starting to feel like I can create and digitally draw my own art. Even though I have a long way to go. I’m still trying to find my own style. Like with the black and white, iv been going for how it’s done in comics/manga. Iv been reading a lot of berserk and it inspired me. Iv also got myself a YouTube channel. My channel is Amber Rose and the video for this art work is Skull and Owl digital drawing. It’s a little lengthy but it’s something nice to watch while you draw. For music I was influenced by lofihop, mrsuicidesheep, black pistol fire and alona chemerys. For other artists iv gotten inspiration from at kasey golden, Jazza, Aliki Karkoulia and lavender town.

Learning to draw digitally update!
Iv found that creating the artworks with the drawing tablet are taking much longer. It’s probably because I get stuck with some computer commandments. What iv also found to be very important is layers, iv now been using them like crazy. Iv also been learning how to use colour. Recently iv been into tatto design, clean ink looks and images that could look like stickers. I want to get more into monster designing.

Learning to draw digitally
Iv had a little experience drawing on adobe illustrator using the pen tool. However to draw like this always felt a little rigid. I wasn’t sure if it was due to my inexperience or this method of drawing just wasn’t right for me. Iv recently gotten back into digital art. This time I wanted to learn/use a drawing tablet because it felt like a more natural transition, from traditional to digital. I’m looking forward to seeing what I can create.

Lavender Towne or Harley is a young female artist whose primary work is digital art. It is often in the form of comics like Unfamiliar, but also largely in her YouTube channel. She has a very stylized cartoon image to her work which I love to her create in the videos. Often, they tell a story such as making food into people and the same for planets, zodiac and apps. However, the most appealing are the stories about art school which she dropped of to follow her career on YouTube. This includes the videos of how to do certain thing correctly/not look as weird. As iv been taking a digital art class iv been watching her content more and more. I don’t think I will draw in her style, but I like it very much. She also prompts herself on Redbubble, Tumblr, patreon, facebook and twitter. Overall she is someone who influences my work.

Post content: Delta Heavy is a duo music group by Simon James and Ben Hall, debuting in 2009. There sound specialise in a DJ format. Having an old-school, dubstep and moombahcore sound. They were born/live in London and still make a career producing their music through the label RAM Records Monstercat. I love watching there more visual appealing video clips, their most visually notable and striking music videos is ‘White Flag’. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebILIKHi9wo Art directed by Najeeb Tarazi know for past work in toy story and cars 2. It has a gaming style, retro pixel game vibe that consistently references childhoods iconic games/functions e.g. text that narrates attacks or eating food to replenish health. It’s a fantastic short video that has a lot of thought placed in it with a nostalgic twinge. This isn’t the only dazzling video clip they have released. There is ‘Get By’ an incredibly time consuming but rewarding stop motion video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cOt9UcYGOU and ‘Punish My Love’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3gw0iD5y0Q I hope that one day I’m able to produce some amazing like this. Overall they are creatively inspiring in a sense of audio soundscape.

Kasey Golden is a 29 year old, multimedia online artist that specializes in water colour, crafts and digital art. Born in America now living in Canada, she makes her career at home from online platforms such as YouTube, Redbubble, Storenvy, Patreon, Twittier, Tumblr and Instagram since 2014. She inspires to create children’s illustration books. The main style used is a very simple yet highly stylized cartoon aesthetic, with solid colours. Kasey uses other materials such as inks, paint, pens, pencils, sewing and other (unconventional items). Its content is clean and well presented in consistent manner. I personally really enjoy her cartoon style and use of mix media. As part of Kasey’s online profile she creates and participates in current challenges like Inktober, Huevember, how small can you draw, 1/5/10 minute challenge, 3 colours, painting with tea, inverted colour challenge, 500 prompts, scrawler box, Tokyo treat box as well as collaboration with other artists. Examples of this is

Week 3 and 4 Digital Art Blog
Week 3/4 Post 5 Digital art class
This is now the home stretch, iv decided to make this last post combined as a lot of my recent work has been more precise rather than experimental. During week 3, I made 2 posters that had the theme of a pastel Japanese cafe. the background music would be something like lofi hip hop. I used Adobe Illustrator and followed a tutorial by Digital Art Creation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUD6-E6wu20 and got some references photos from stock image websits like unsplash, to make my lemon tea poster and Ramen poster. It was a lot of fun making the lemon, ham and eggs in the posters. It was not fun working out how to do gradients. It was difficult for some reason. But ive got the hang of it now.

I went through the same process with using unsplash stock images to get inspiration to create my Tree Frog and Tucan stickers. I think they turned out very cute. Personally i enjoy drawing animals very much, so it was an enjoyable experience. I decided to go with a more block/solid colors rather than realistic because i wouldn't of had enough time and lacking in technical skills. It will be something to work on in the future.

and the second last for the work was an Iron Giant inspired poster. Following a tutorial by Digital Art Creation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wm1OTLlHwIg. However instead of doing a space ship and vibrant colors it became more pastel and has the iron giant. This was probably the one that took the longest but is my favorite. I especially like the mountains and texture background. It was quite the learning experience and it feels like my skills have been more polished however i’m far from were I want to be.

The last of it was the scan i was working on awhile ago. Fixing the black and white as well as adding a background it looks much more clean now. It was a lot of trial and error to get it to work. Got some stock images from unsplash. could defiantly see it on a shirt.

Week 2 Digital Art Blog
Week 2 Post 4 Art Class
Second Week is over now and there is so much to think about. Iv been going at my own speed but it needs to go a little faster. Iv got some many ideas but i’m afraid i lack the skill to produce it. At the same time i don’t want this to be an excuse for not doing what i could.
Following a tutorial that uses Adobe illustrator i made 3D Isometric Text. The tutorial was created by Nobu Design on YouTube. You can also find them on Instagram www.instagram.com/iwainobuyuki/ and Facebook web.facebook.com/nobuyuki006. Here i learned how to apply effects. Using the Roboto font i got from Urban Fonts, I Created an isometric text that had layers/depth. Below is my attempt to find a good color

i learned how to center my items as well as add gradients. I couldn't think of any meaningful words so i tried finding some on random word generator. In the end i choose this solar systems planets. Just thought it would be cool. I also imported stock images that can be found from unsplash as the background. from this i learned how to bring an item forward or backwards. below are the results.

I’m not 100% happy with what i created but i’m happy created it. Below is more images i created with the help of photo mosh.

There were so many styles i liked but at the same time didn’t. i went through so many color schemes. In conclusion i would deferentially like to do more work with isometric feature.

Week 2 Digital Art Blog
Week 2 Post 3 Digital Art Class
With the Second week over, things feel like they are starting to make more sense. There is still a long way to go until i’m constable with using this technology. But my library of knowledge is growing. Still using adobe programs.
Learned from my mistake of exporting images from Adobe Photoshop/illustrator. I was leaving the file size small with the color option CYMK, which is more suited to printing. however most importantly, my canvas size was just way to big. Now i’m using a higher file size and resolution of 300. my color option is RGB and the canvas size is more reasonable now. Learned more about importing images and getting stock images from places such as pixels, unsplash and pixabay. As well as installing additional fonts Such as comic font. I got this from Urban Fonts. Learned about getting icons, like you can find from Icomoon. And how to Scan items or my own art. I plan do so some stuff with this in the future. I also started using a Wacom Drawing Tablet. Never knew i would love it so much. Started an image that i’m drawing in my own style from Yuki Kawatsu. They are a great artist that should defiantly get recognition. you can find them here on Tumblr, Instagram or Twitter. Their work mainly consists of cute girls wearing funky outfits, usually pastel or vibrant colors such as blue pink and yellow. There always seems to be an animal incorporated for example cat socks or a cat shaped backpack. The work is digital and more on a cartoon/anime style. Its a simple but effective style. Any ways you should defiantly check them out. Below is my redraw in my style draft. I plan to make her have more fish features or aquatic themed.

I plan to put an image in the background such as

or
and below is the rough idea of what i was thinking to do with one of my scans.

Week 1 digital Art Blog
Week 1 post 2 Digital Art Class : Extended explanation about completed work
Following a tutorial from Tasty Tuts https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=3&v=Cye3VaLo0Go . It taught me how to create the Obama Hope poster style In Adobe Illustrator and apply it to my chosen image. The programs used where Adobe illustrator and Adobe photo shop. I did use photo mosh https://photomosh.com later for experimentation.
Essentially this was a tedious process for me. I’m a complete beginner and it most differently relays that. I do believe that this is however a good step forward in creating a stronger foundation in my digital art skills. As they say “to make one good piece of art you need to make a 1000 bad one”.
Firstly using photo shop, i imported the chosen image. Which was Lara Croft from the 2018 movie Tomb Raider. I choose her because i wanted someone who was adventurous and personally fun. I did think about using other images such as animals or a movie character called John Wick.
Essentially you had to turn the image into a grey scale/almost black and white image, before cutting out the desired part to use. Then moving the image into illustrator it gets rasterized and then has an cut out effect filter placed on it. All of this is to make the image more simplistic. The tutorial provided a template which was very useful. It contained all the layers. So when i was happy i could go in and erase out the top layer to reveal the under layers color. I repeated this process of removing color and adding until i was satisfied. It doesn't look like the character but it was a good experience that i could take a lot away from such as, just using the programs features and shortcuts. Below is the original poster image.

Next are the cut outs, then making the image more simple.

below on the left is my attempt and on the left is the original poster style/image.
below are some attempts at exporting the image as i was getting dull saturation. As well as experiments with photo-mosh and below is the final out come

Week 1 or 4, Digital Art Classes
What a week it has been! As exciting and interesting as my first two lessons in digital art have been so far, it has been equally daunting. This is something utterly new to me. From using Adobe photo shop to creating this blog, or my artist account on Instagram ( amber_rose_studio ). There have been so many new concepts and programs that have been introduced to me, such as
-GIPHY Creator https://giphy.com/create/gifmaker Here you can make GIF, memes or just add animated text and stickers. I just played around with the different filters, nothing turned out great but i had fun just playing around with it.
- Photomosh [Tool] https://photomosh.com It contains the same concept as GIPHY but has a lot more filtering options that are adjustable. This one was quite interesting to use. I spent so much time just going through each filter option. I used filters such as bad tv, passthu, distort, melt, wobble and lino-cut.
I also learned about how to pixel art in Photoshop, take the image into Photoshop and scale it down. Then enlarge the image. it can have a very nice retro game like feel to it.
I‘v learned more about broken art and what aesthetic can mean. i’v also learned about the site, this person dose not exist. in short, it generates faces of people don’t exist in reality. https://thispersondoesnotexist.com/
Mainly iv learnt a lot about how to use Adobe Photo-shop and Adobe Illustrator. I followed and completed a tutorial from http://youtu.be/Cye3VaLo0Go Where i created the Obama hope poster style. I will go into a lot more detail in the next post. because this post will become way to long.

-Self Reflection-
There is so much still to do and learn. i’v found myself somewhat lost and constricted. however that is to be expected when learning something new for first time though. For the time being i don’t have Adobe photo-shop or illustrator programs installed on my personal computer . Iv been spending extra time in the the computer labs/library to continue working towards some sort of basic competency. I’m not sure if anyone else is having such difficulty understanding and completing tasks. I’m aware that my work is not great nor complex. That it needs more works as well as a stronger foundation. That it is less developed and somewhat basic. However this is new. I’m not instantly going to be great and remember everything. I don’t know commands or short cuts, but I’m learning. such as shift z to zoom and hold shift to draw straight lines.
In conclusion my work is sub pare/lacking in many areas, but if i put in the time and effort, it will improve. I wanted to learn this, so i will go the extra mile. Even if if i don’t receive the best results. I have an extremely short time to cram a lot of knowledge and understand completely new features, so its important that i work at my own pace. I’m looking forward to what i’m going to be able to do. How will i improve? What direction will it take? Where might this lead me to in the future?
Thank you for taking the time to read my first attempt at a blog/process journal about digital art.
