Thanks for playing along, MacGyver fandom! For a tiny fandom we're going strong!
It's taken me a bit to scour Tumblr and AO3 to make sure I was counting every new fanwork created for the Writealong. Most works ended up on AO3, but a few didn't get put into the Collection, and there were a couple Tumblr-only posts. BUT! I've pulled together a list of every work I'm aware of and crunched some numbers, because who doesn't love some stats, amiright?
This year we had
2 artists + numerous others who helped me put together an awesome list of prompts!
13 writers participating!
64 new fanworks! (That includes a few separate chapters for writers who combined several prompts into a multi-chapter story)
Most used prompts: It was a 3-way tie between
Set 1 prompt: "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger" script quote
Set 2 prompt: Airport Security
Set 3 prompt: @lupinescribbler's artwork of Mac & Bozer in the woods
Most prolific writer: @lilituism, with 11 stories -- one for every day of the event. Impressive!
Want to get a full list of stories? You're in luck! I've made a spreadsheet which lists every work by writer and prompt. Unsurprisingly--becasue it happens every time in every challenge--there was more written to the earlier prompts than the later ones.
(Note that the sheet lists only 62 words, but there were 2 occassions when the same writer wrote 2 stories for the SAME prompt, which meant the spreadsheet's count is an undercount.)
What to do now that the Writealong is over?
@macgyvercairo's April Cairo Day celebration week starts on Sunday, April 13. I know they said the April event wasn't about stories, but there are some prompts...
I will be hosting a MacGyver Crossover Bang! starting sometime after April Cairo Day. Dates and details TBD. Keep an eye out...
@macgyvercairo's bigger Cairo Day June event is only about 2 months away!

The Phoenix jet crashes with Mac and Jack onboard. An injured Mac improvises a fix for their radio while Jack worries about Mac.
Written for Rosie’s Writealong Prompt Set 9: Epistaxis (aka nosebleed)
~~
Mac and Jack were on the Phoenix jet when everything went to shit. It was unfortunate timing since they were about an hour from landing when their plane dropped out of the sky, crashing into the mountainous terrain of California.
Jack woke with a raging headache. He was still strapped into his seat in the smoldering wreckage. “Mac?” he croaked before his eyes were even open.
The lack of response jolted him into action, and he fumbled with the seatbelt buckle for a moment before he realized that he was only using one hand to do it. The other was clutching tightly to the front of Mac’s shirt where he’d thrown his arm over his partner to keep him in his seat.
Jack painfully turned his head to see Mac’s unconscious body next to him. “Please don’t be dead,” he murmured as he shakily checked for a pulse. It was strong, and Jack felt an intense sense of relief.
He gave himself a minute to slump down in his seat and take stock of his condition. Aside from the monster headache and what was sure to be an awful case of whiplash, he felt okay. No broken bones, no bleeding wounds. It was maybe his best crash ever.

Your friendly neighborhood Cairo Day Mods (@improvidus and @impossiblepluto) have been talking. Cairo Day is traditionally celebrated by the MacGyver (2016) fandom during the week of April 14th to coincide with the airdate of the season one finale which takes place on the anniversary of the infamous "We Don't Talk About Cairo"-Mission.
Fans celebrate by writing fanfiction, making fanart, creating gifsets, etc.
Mid to end of April is a busy time for students, teachers, families who might be taking a spring break trip, mods who are in school. With that in mind, we are planning to host a Cairo Day event June 23rd-29th. In the next few days we will begin accepting prompt submissions followed by voting for your favorite prompts.
But we didn't want to let Cairo Day pass unobserved. Taking a look at the voting data of previous years, we gathered the "runner up" prompts that didn't quite make the cut. We will also be hosting some polls and ask games throughout the week. If there is an idea that you have for how you would like to celebrate Cairo Day either in April or in June, let us know
Sunday, April 13: Deep Breath Forged in Fire
Monday, April 14: Improvise
Tuesday, April 15th Hope Night and Day
Wednesday, April 16th Blood Oath Exhaustion
Thursday, April 17th: Sand + Water A Shot in the Dark
Friday, April 18th AU "Knew you'd find me"
Saturday, April 19th Field Medicine Waffles
FAQs
What is Cairo Day?
A week-long event hosted by the MacGyver(2016) fandom, but anyone is welcome. Fans can write fics, create art or gifsets. Share meta, screenshots, favorite episodes. Read, comment, and reblog the fanworks.
Can I...?
Yeah, probably. The only real rule is please don't use AI to create anything. You can combine our prompts with another event. Mix and Match prompts. Write one long story featuring all the prompts. I keep secretly hoping one year someone will create a fiber arts project somehow.
What does the "Improvise" Prompt mean?
anything goes. Write the fic you've always wanted to write. Finish a story you've been working on forever. Use a prompts from an old Cairo Day Event. Use it as a free space on a bingo card. Use it as a catch up day.
This seems very similar to all the other years, are you guys sure it's different?
Oh. No. It is. Super different. It's not just the same event twice. Nope. Not at all.

Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Characters: Riley Davis, Wilt Bozer (MacGyver TV 2016), Matilda “Matty” Webber, Angus MacGyver (MacGyver TV 2016) Additional Tags: drunk voicemails, Angst, Hangover, Episode: s03e14 Father + Bride + Betrayal (MacGyver TV 2016) Series: Part 3 of June 2023 Flashfic Writealong Summary:
The Phoenix team wakes up to concerning voicemails from Mac the morning after Jack leaves to hunt down Kovac. Naturally, they all rush to check on their friend. Meanwhile, Mac got blackout drunk to deal with missing Jack.
Written for Rosie’s Writealong Prompt Set 6: Blackout
~~
Riley sat on her Phoenix Med bed to tie her boots and put her rings on. She’d spent the night in Medical to ensure that Mac’s antidote for her cyanide poisoning was effective. Doc Cottle had given her a clean bill of health, or at least, a ‘you’re not dying today’ bill of health and told her to go home and rest for the weekend.
She couldn’t believe that Jack was gone. Actually, she could. He’d disappeared from her life before under similar circumstances. He’d been more honest with her this time, which was nice, but that didn’t make up for the fact that she trusted him, and he was now just gone.
Her cell phone was in the bottom of the bag of her personal effects. She turned it over to see that she’d missed a call from Mac and that the battery was nearly dead. There was a charger in her car, so she gathered up the rest of her stuff, and tapped the screen to listen to Mac’s voicemail as she headed out the door.

Rosie’s flashfic March 2nd prompts :) @rosies-writealong
Full fic on ao3!
Begrudgingly, and with a growing sense of unease, Mac waited until a car finally bounced over the rough terrain towards him.
Mac shaded his eyes as he walked slowly closer. The door flew open and Jack hopped out with what seemed like an undue amount of energy.
Mac was about to call out a sheepish greeting, when Jack started sprinting. A few seconds later and Jack crashed into him with a bone-crushing hug.
The impact awakened a host of aches and pains that Mac was not expecting to have, and he let out a sound more from the surprise of it than the pain itself.
Jack drew back immediately, holding Mac’s shoulders at arms-length. His eyes had a wildness to them that immediately spooked Mac in turn. “The hell’s going on, man, you scared us to death. How’d you even get here?”

After a grueling series of three back-to-back missions, Jack Dalton is ready to kick back at Mac’s place with a couple'a beers and bask in the warmth from the fire pit, leaving this past week behind him.
All he needs to do is get the kid home in one piece…Which is easier said than done.

Day 8: electrocution and embarrassment
@rosies-writealong
Working on actually posting to the site now! Thank you everyone for the encouragement!
https://archiveofourown.org/works/63621118
Riley spread her bandaged fingers across the sheet, avoiding Bozer’s gaze. “It’s stupid. And I know it’s stupid, man. I know that.”
“It’s not,” he answered, trying to sound reassuring. “Nothing you’re feelin’ right now is stupid, or shallow…Ri, it’s not.”
“Jack’s—“ she swallowed hard. “Jack’s angry.”
“Jack is….” Reeling. Trying to forget the weight of her, lifeless in his arms. “His mind was so far away from your worries…you kinda shocked him.” Bozer grimaced at his words. “Sorry, pun very much not intended.”
Riley snorted a little. “You start walkin’ on eggshells about this, an’ I might lose my mind.” She sank further into the pillows as he stroked his thumb across the undamaged hand he was holding. “I just…That scene. Y’know?”
“I know.”
“The one dude…it cuts to ‘im as just a, a skeleton. An’ his, his hair—“
It was the pain meds they had her on that crumpled her face now, bringing tears so easily to the surface. “Riley,” Bozer whispered. “Riley, hey. It wasn’t like that, I promise….”
He ducked his head for just a second to blot his own eyes on his arm, trying not to remember the way it had been: his friend’s face frozen in a rictus of unending pain, her hand clenched impossibly tight on the fence they’d thought had been shut off. Mac doing…something with a wire and a road sign to blow the fuse so Jack could pull her free—Jack, sobbing through round after breathless round of compressions while they all waited and prayed for the improvised AED to find a shockable rhythm—
With a deep breath, he banished the memories again. “Here. Feel the ends.” He raised her fingers gently to her curls. “It got a little singed, but they fixed it. Trimmed it so it’s nice an’ even. It looks good. Nothin’ to worry about. Promise.”
Riley closed her eyes, face flushing with shame. “It’s impossible to g-get it right sometimes. As a kid, and…” her voice went dull, her hand moving back down. “There were things you could do in prison. Braids. Gel you could make with…jelly an’ cocoa butter. But the water, it stripped you out. And I just….”
“This brought it all back.”
She pinned him with an aching stare. “You saw me, f-fresh outta that place—“
“You were gorgeous.” Bozer reached out to thumb away a drop rolling down her cheek. “But it don’t really matter how I, or anybody else saw you in that moment. Just you.”
Riley nodded slowly. “I…watched it in grade-school,” she whispered. “Last day before the break, when Ms. Grenshaw broke out the holiday movies. An’ when we got to that one, s-stupid scene….”
“They pointed at you.” Somehow, Bozer kept his voice steady. “Maybe not all of ‘em. But it was enough.”
“He don’t…get it, man.” Riley breathed deep, and for a moment Bozer lost himself in that movement. Her chest filling with air, emptying, rising and falling again….
“He don’t,” he finally answered. “An’ it’s not somethin’ he ever will. But Ri…even if he could normally understand it, Jack ain’t gonna get much right now beyond that you were—“ his voice broke, and he tightened his grip on her. “You were gone,” he pushed through it. “He ain’t angry, he just…stepped out for a sec, ‘cause….”
Bozer couldn’t finish in the face of that wide, hurt stare.
“Do you think he’d…” Her voice was so small. “Would he…come back?”
“Yes,” he breathed, letting her go and rising to his feet. Reaching behind him for the knob. “Right now, he’d come back right now, he’s right outside the door—“
And then he wasn’t—Jack was pushing his way in just like Bozer knew he would, staggering in and reaching for her hand, his fingers ghosting over her shoulder, the side of her wet face, her hair.
“You’re beautiful,” came his broken gasp. “You’re so beautiful, every inch of you…Every inch, if I could just, if I could go back to that little girl—Ri-Ri, if I could just tell you—”
“Jack—“
Bozer closed the door on their tears, feeling heavy and old. One look at his face and his best friend was moving forward.
“She okay?” He nodded numbly. Closed his eyes as Mac’s arms surrounded him. “Are you?”
“Brought up some stuff,” he managed, letting himself relax into the hug. “Mission City. You remember those days.”
The arms around him tightened. “I was so grateful,” his brother murmured. “When you taught me how to fight. But…Boze, it kills me that you had to know how to.”
“That goes both ways, man.” Bozer let out a sigh. “We’ll be okay. You got her back.”
“We fought hard last night. And we won.” One quick back-slap and Mac eased away, just enough to stare down determinedly into his eyes. “We’re gonna be okay.”
“We will.” Bozer nodded again, firmer this time. “But, uh…this Christmas? Let’s take our Home Alones off the movie list for a bit.”
“Oh, I’ve always hated those.” He could’ve cried at Mac’s eye-roll, the simple acceptance without question. “Like somebody watched Saw and Jackass and thought, hey, what a great kids’ series!”
“Uh, Mac? Both of those came out after—“
“And the science!”
And his bestie was off, dragging Bozer away from dark memories and into the implausibility of stunts that both boys had, admittedly, tried as kids. Soon they were sitting side-by-side, Bozer leaning into his brother’s solidness as Mac’s voice drifted over him….
Past haunts fleeing in its wake.
