A3 Reflection
Overall, I’m very happy with how my final project turned out.
I feel that I managed to capture something new and creative by reimagining the audio, and combining it with the things that I learned in A1 about Swiss Style Typography.
I wish that I’d done more process work on this project, and explored more avenues on what I could have created out of tha audio I’d made, but as I worked on this project in Premiere Pro, I was confident about the design decisions I’d made.

Final Video.
My intention was to make a video that was visually cohesive and consistent (learning from the last project). With the song edit that I made, I realized that I could transform the comedy aspect from Shia LaBeouf’s monologue into something fully inspirational, so I went forward with this dialogue intent as I worked on my video.
While Helvetica may not have been the most creative font to use for this project, I felt that it strongly met the visual intent of the audio I chose for this project. It is minimal and it makes a strong statement. I also found that it was one of the best fonts to use working with the glitch effects I used for this video.
I tried to make a dynamic use of grid and off center spacing for my font. I used 3 point sizes to maintain consistency, and tried to make them extremely diverse in size, because I believe that high contrast typographic hierarchy was the most effective in this case.
In terms of the glitch effects/overall effects, my intent was to use effects in order to create emphasis on the sound narrative. I was careful to not place any effects that would take away from the overall typography.

Poster Images.
I screenshotted a couple of stills from my final video in order to find the most related poster image for my submission.

Effects.
I knew my video was a little bit lacking, so I went to Google and began to browse around for particular glitch effects.
Many tutorial videos I found opted for using Adobe After Effects. I didn’t want the responsibility of undertaking an entirely new program, so I was grateful for the discovery that many people on the internet had made effect packages for the glitch effects that I was looking for.
My intent on the video was to use effects to emphasize certain words, and to carry over the quiet parts of the video, so there were no awkward visual pauses.
I also added a chromatic aberration/RGB effect to the video to tie it together with the overall impact of the effects.

Version 1 of my video.
I knew I wanted it to be simple, and rhythmically aligned with the song. I thought only about layout here, and saved the effects for later.

Audio
“Just Do It,” mixed with another glitch song, “Electric Touch” by Break Science & Michal Menert.
I liked how this track interacted with the original audio, as I found it really played up its motivational aspect. I added redux and really tried to play up the glitchy effects to give provisions for the glitchy effects that I wanted to encapsulate with my typography.

Audio
Inspired by glitchy typography, I edited the audio from the "Just Do It” video with the glitch hop song, “The Race” by Thomas Vent.
Some audio experimentation, trying to make something fun and eclectic.

Video Selection: Just Do It
I decided to go with Shia LaBeouf’s ever famous, “Just Do It” video.
History
The video itself is a clip of him performing for a video art project called #Introductions for a London arts college, directed by two students, Luke Turner and Finnish artist Nastja Säde Rönkkö. Each student in the class was told to write a short 30 second script for LeBeouf to perform in front of a greenscreen, which could be as “poetic, abstract or literal” as they liked. It was intended to be a performance piece, and was filmed over a greenscreen, and released on a Creative Commons license which means that anyone in the world can work with the video for free.
This internet sensation video made its rounds on the internet starting in 2015, accumulating over 1.4 million views in its first 5 days online. A plethora of satire videos have been made based off this original clip.
Why I Chose It
I chose this video because it’s both comedically intense, and actually motivational. The intensity of his voice and the message has interesting implications for creating bold/intense typography. It’s short/sweet, and whether by comedy or message, it makes an impact. Already having watched it multiple times, I’ve noticed the message starts hitting more profoundly every time I listen to it.

Project 3 Direction
For project 3, I knew that I either wanted to make a typography video related to motivation, comedy, or something with some sense of lyricism.
I started by looking into monologues from some great movies like American Beauty and Pulp Fiction. None of them really hit home.
I found some motivational speeches, but they were generally too long, or too sappy. I found my direction when I thought about comedy.

Project 2 Reflection
I’m proud of myself for going so out of my comfort zone with lots of colour and using fonts I’m not comfortable with. I also made a lot of variety, which is very different for me. I tried to maintain an overall continuity with the consistent type faces and recurring colours, but I do agree with the sentiment that I might have taken the variety a little far.
If I had an extra week, I would have probably toned down some of my designs, and tried to create a more simple continuity. I also would have tried again on the book binding.
Overall, there’s a lot of things I would have liked to have improve about my design in hindsight, but I’m happy to have created such an expressive book design. Even with how erratic it is, I feel that it captures the passionate, bold tone that I was trying to convey. This was a great lesson in the merits of expressive typography for me.

Cutting Troubles.
The outer cover of my design proved to be too large for my cut down book, so I tried to trim it after binding, resulting in this rough edge.
I didn’t have enough time to reprint and try again. May this photo be a reminder to manage my time and to think through the consequences of binding/cutting decisions.
