Thinking about adopted au Steve with Ponyboy. Adopted au Steve who watches the shy little kid who spoke mostly spanish grow into a loud mouthed, comfortable, dream filled teenager. Adopted au Steve who will tease pony and bicker with him but loves that kid like his own brother.

Adopted au Steve who backs off when Paul becomes the primary Spanish speaker in pony's life but whose gaze still flicks to him when Ace cracks a funny joke in the language only the three of them truly understand.

Adopted au Steve who watches when this thirteen year old boy's world is shattered as he loses a second set of parents. Adopted au Steve who will make inappropriate jokes in Spanish just loud enough for pony to hear them and a small smile to appear on his face. Adopted au Steve who watches as loss after loss starts turning pony cold and angry. Adopted au Steve who refuses to just stand by and idly watch as pony turns into a shell of himself.

Adopted au Steve who starts to see a little too much of himself in pony and needs to put a stop to it cause that kid is better than him. He needs to be better than Steve. He isn't as far gone as Steve is. He still gets tickled awake and dreams of leaving Tulsa and Steve will not let unfair circumstances and losses make the kid lose his spark. Adopted au Steve who starts forcing pony out of the house. Adopted au Steve who spends almost three weeks speaking in nothing but Spanish until pony finally gives in and starts answering him the same way.

Adopted au Steve who watches pony deflate when Steve's birthday is called in the draft. Adopted au Steve who looks at the lanky, now not teenage boy right before he gets on the bus to report for duty and puts a hand on his shoulder and hugs him and whispers "estarás bien. Sigue soñando y no te rindas. prométemelo" you'll be okay. keep dreaming and don't give up. promise me. Adopted au Steve who feels pony's arms tighten before releasing and he watches as the man, who was once the scared little boy he knew, stands a little straighter and keeps Steve's gaze with a fiery determination despite the tears in his eyes and says, "Lo prometo. simplemente ven a casa." I promise. just come home.

my personal nonsensical headcannon was that Ponyboy was the ugliest fucking baby. Like one of those babies that look 80 years old and like a non-sentient being at the same time.

Like people physically recoiled at the sight of him. Soda was embarrassed when girls would ask if that was his brother.
