Personal protection doesn’t have to be complex or difficult. I rarely do any kind of elaborate working to cast protections over myself and my energy. Instead, over the years, I’ve adapted the mundane everyday activities in my life into a net of protection that I naturally renew every day or so.
Here are some of the things I do to protect my energy every day:
My dresser and closet are warded and charmed so that I can easily choose an item and activate the protection of every item I put on. (I’ll publish a post about the method for charming a piece of furniture at some point.)
When I add sugar and milk to my coffee, I am adding sweetness and richness to my day. Before I drink it, I offer the first taste to my house spirits in return for their protection for the day. (You could do this with your deities, ancestors, etc.)
If I’m looking for a boost to my protections for the day, I’ll have a hearty breakfast to keep my energy up. This usually includes eggs, toast with peanutbutter and a jelly of some kind, and turkey bacon since these are things I associate with a good day and extra energy. You can replace these with whatever you like as long as you’re cooking and eating with the intent of protection and boosting your energy.
Greet the house plants and rub the leaves of the plants whose energy I would like to carry with me (usually this is rosemary, basil, and the spider plants for me).
I rarely leave the apartment without a hat on. As I choose one (to match my outfit, of course, but also to match my mood and goals) and put it on, I will trace a circle around it and activate the same protection that my other clothes hold. This is my version of veiling; you can use scarves, headbands, bandanas, sunglasses, or even the hood of a jacket or hoodie to the same effect.
The best defense, in my opinion, is a good offense. When I know I’m going to be around someone I can’t stand or who has a history of invading my boundaries, I’ll carry a nail or screw that’s been anointed with something spicy - often pepper-infused oil or spicy pickle juice, since that’s usually what I have on-hand - to mark myself as “Not An Easy Target, Asshole” and repel their efforts. I recently added an anointed clothespin to my favorite denim jacket that’s holding a patch in place (a heart that says “nope”) for the same effect.
To help absorb extra energy, especially in crowded environments, carry something absorbant. Usually this is a piece of kitchen sponge for me, but you could do this with a small potato also, a la @lazywitchling!
I don’t wear perfume, but I will occasionally make a simple herbal spray to spritz my coats and shoes with protective energy. I have a recipe for this coming soon!
Speaking of shoes, to give myself another boost of protection, I’ll place a sigil in the bottom of my shoe. This could be a piece of paper or a pencil drawing directly on the inside, depending on the shoe.
These are just the everyday things. It’s important to me that I use what’s around me in my home so that I bring a little bit of home with me everywhere I go. It’s my main source of comfort and power as a hearth witch.
Pretty much everything I’ve mentioned here will have a separate “tutorial” or recipe post at some point, so keep an eye out for those things! :)

A small list of items use in hexing
Tumblr media
There's a lot of discourse around baneful magic, hexing, chaos magic, jinxing and curses.
It's not that I want to actively encourage those practices, but all witches should know what items are used for in spells, especially if they're using advanced magic. Here's a short list of items I see used in hexes and such (no herbs!)
As always, please do your research on all ingredients in a spell in order to source them ethically.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Poppets ~ This is an item used to signify a person in a spell. You can make them out of just about anything, but I most commonly see people stitching their own dolls or using paper cut in the shape of a person.
Taglocks ~ I feel like people get Taglocks and Poppets confused. Taglocks are actually items, sometimes personal, that create a link to a certain person in a spell. This can be as simple as a photo of them, an item they left behind, or even something from their body, like hair or nails.
Graveyard Dirt ~ This is dirt obtained from, you guessed it, graves and cemeteries. Inserting my own opinion here, it's difficult to obtain Graveyard Dirt from the source ethically. In fact, prancing into a graveyard with a shovel can probably get you in a lot of trouble. Some alternatives here can be taking sticks or rocks from a gravesite (NOT anything on someone's grave) or even taking the soil from beneath a dead plant. Always leave an offering for the spirits.
Iron ~ Typically you won't see straight-up Iron listed as a spell item, but you may see rusty nails and other sharp, rusted items. Iron is used to attract and repel, so it can be used to attract negative energy to someone while repelling it from you.
Broken Glass ~ If you're able to safely collect glass after breaking an object, see if you can save it! Broken glass is great for protection in spells. A good example: if you cast a binding spell on someone, it can help prevent them from retaliating.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
By no means is this the only use for these objects. In fact, many items used in baneful magic have uses in protection spells as well. Always do your research, especially to ensure you are not impeding on a closed practice of another culture, before attempting to cast ANY spells.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
If you found this post to be useful, and are financially able, please consider leaving this witch a tip!

Tumblr media
Process:
• Gather your ingredients. Center and ground yourself. Cleanse your space using sage or other cleansing herbs

• Place the ingredients into the jar while focusing your intentions on protection. Keep in mind this jar is also designed to remind you of your personal strength, so picking an intention that encapsulates both protection and strength is best
• Once you’ve placed all of the ingredients into the jar, seal with wax from the candle. Continue to focus on locking your intention inside of the jar
• Once the jar is sealed, blow or snuff out the candle. Place the jar on your alter or carry with you for protection and personal strength

🔮BANISHING🔮
VS
🔮WARDING🔮
✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿
(what really is the difference?)
✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿
Tumblr media Tumblr media
✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿 ✨🧿✨🧿
BANISHING
Banishing is far more specific and direct than warding.
✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿 ✨🧿✨🧿
WHY IS IT USED?
Banishing is used to get rid of a particulur energy, spirit, or person. Think carefully before banishing, as it's a strong form of defensive magic.
✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿✨🧿 ✨🧿✨🧿
BANISHING METHODS
USE THE ELEMENTS
burn a slip of paper with your target's name on it
throw a leaf with your target's name on it into a running river/stream
burn corresponding herbs and pass the smoke through your space
CANDLES
anoint your candle with corresponding herbs and oils, then burn it
when the candle has burnt out. the banishing is complete
SIGILS
make your own banishing sigil find one that resonates with you
place it in the space or on the item you are banishing energy from
HERBS + TINCTURES
use herbal smoke to force energy out of a space or object
make a spray or herbal tineture to sprinkle around your home
FOLLOW YOUR INTUITION
use the method that calls to you
never use a method that feels wrong or that you haven't researched thoroughly

🔮✨🔮✨🔮✨🔮✨🔮✨🔮✨🔮✨🔮✨🔮
WARDING
Warding is a gentler form of defensive magic that is used in a more general sense.
🔮✨🔮✨🔮✨🔮✨🔮✨🔮✨🔮✨🔮✨🔮
WHY IS IT USED?
Warding is used to protect and guard from negative energies of any kind - it redirects energy away from you or your space.
🔮✨🔮✨🔮✨🔮✨🔮✨🔮✨🔮✨🔮✨🔮
WARDING METHODS
VISUALIZATION
use your intention and energy to visualize a powerful barrier of protecting light around yourself or your space for more info on ENERGETIC PROTECTION click HERE
GUARDIANS
create a guardian to guard your home or space from negative energies
use a small object, enchant it with your intention, and keep it in a safe, permanent place
CRYSTALS
corresponding crystals can be worn as jewelry to protect against negative energy
placing erystals in a room or around you house will create a protective barrier
SALT
black salt can be ured in banishing rituals or used alone
sprinkle salt around your door and windows or make protection jars
HERBS
burn protective herbs and pass the smoke through your space or tools
sprinkle herbal oils and tinctures on yourself and your space for protective barriers
FOLLOW YOUR INTUITION
use the method that calls to you
never use a method that feels wrong or that you haven't researched thoroughly

SIGILS
Tumblr media
A sigil is a type of symbol used in magick. The term has usually referred to a type of pictorial signature of a deity or spirit. In modern usage, especially in the context of chaos magic, sigil refers to a symbolic representation of the practitioner's desired outcome.
basically a form of art in a way in which inscribed or painted symbols are considered to have magical powers
Tumblr media
I personally don't fully burn them to activate them ; I just burn the edges but sometimes I burn the whole thing so yeah lol.
Tumblr media
you can always get more creative ;3

How I Make Sigils
I’m going to show you how I made the sigil for my icon. I use the Sigilization method popularized by Austin Osman Spare. (There are other methods, but I haven’t tried them) First, you need a statement of intent. This one is simply my blog name, “Sigil Athenaeum”. Write it out and cross out all of the vowels and any repeating consonants.
Tumblr media
Rearrange the remaining letters into an abstract design. Personally I don’t worry about using every single letter, but rather deconstruct them further and just use their common or distinct lines. This one has a couple of curves a couple diagonal lines, a couple horizontal, and a few vertical. This makes my sigils look less like letters pasted together and more abstract, which I like. I usually end up making a few sketches before I find an idea I like.
Tumblr media
Most of the time I try and make my sigils visually match the intent. A sigil about water would probably be more flowy than one about rocks. An athenaeum is a place that promotes learning and collects knowledge. It’s named after the Greek goddess, Athena. In my mind it evokes an image like the Parthenon and its rows of straight columns. I decided I wanted my sigil to reflect that, so I sketched some with repeating vertical lines.
Tumblr media
When I have a design I like, I add a bit of flair by changing the line widths. I try to make them look nice.
Tumblr media
Finally, I draw it out on my computer and there you go! A finished sigil.

Stormbornwitch’s Cleansing Chalk
This cleansing chalk is designed to cleanse items or a space. It can also be used to draw sigils. To make this cleansing chalk you will need:
5 eggshells
1 tbs dried sage
7 drops of sage essential oil
1 tbs of rock salk
Dry and crush the eggshells with a mortar and pestle. When finely ground into a powder add the sage essential oil. Now add dried sage and ground until a fine powder (if you like you can use pre-ground sage). Once completely ground, add the rock salt and crush into a fine powder.
Add the cleansing powder into a bowl (Measure how much you have first). Now add the same amount of plain white flour to the bowl. Now slowly add water until it becomes a dough-like consistency. Roll the dough into four long pieces of chalk. Now to dry the chalk you can either leave the chalk to air-dry or you can pop them in a fan-forced oven for half an hour.

♡ Witch Tip: Eggshells ♡
I’m a “green” witch. I work with plants. I grow all kinds of things. And let me tell you, eggshells are my best friend. They’ve become essential to my practice where my plants are concerned.
What eggshells are good for:
♡ Extra nutrients for your green babes
♡ Pest/bug deterrent
♡ Spells
♡ Protection (can be used as a replacement for salt)
♡ Feeling witchy (imagine the poof of powder floating around you and your plants as you recite an incantation)
Whenever I use eggs, I keep the eggshells and rinse them clean in water. After they dry, I grind them up into a fine powder/dust with my mortar and pestle. I keep the powder in a small mason jar with a charged sigil drawn on the lid for plant growth and protection. When I feel that my plant babes need it, I sprinkle the powder around them in a circle and over top of them. Sometimes I’ll say or think the words “growth and protection” to make my intent clear. The eggshell on the plant’s leaves and in the soil will deter insects that like to chew on your lil babes and provide a calcium boost. Depending on what type of spell you want to perform, you can also mix other organic materials (that are beneficial to your plants) in with the eggshell powder.
As an added bonus, this spell never fails to bring me closer to my plants ♡

Rice for Protection
This is a pretty simple recipe I came up with a while back when my anxiety was through the roof. As you will be able to see I am OBSESSED with protection herbs. Protection is a big thing for me and so a majority of my recipes, teas and spells centre around the protection of one’s self and household! Ingredients: 1 Cup of Arborio Rice or any other kind you prefer 1 tsp of marjoram 1 tsp of sage 1 tsp of Thyme and Rosemary mixed Sprinkle of parsley Sprinkle of Fennel seeds Fill pot with water till it covers the rice. As the rice begins to bubble add herbs. Mix together. Cook as you would with regular rice. Serve with meat (preferably salmon) or any other foods you like! This recipe is great and makes the kitchen smell extra homely!
