This white boy came over a month ago and asked why my pillow was shiny. I told him it was satin, because I need a satin case to maintain my natural hairstyle overnight.

This past weekend I stayed over at his house after a party because it was too late to go back to Manhattan, and when I got in bed I noticed that one of his pillowcases was satin.

I asked him why a white, nearly bald man needed a satin pillowcase and he said he bought it for me, in case I needed to sleep over sometime. He didn’t want me to ruin my hair on cotton.

I kissed the ever-loving shit out of him.

That’s how you show a brown girl you care.

I just finished babysitting my friend’s children, and she has most definitely mastered the no spanking/alternative discipline route. I always talk about taking it because I don’t believe in abusing children, but I’ve never personally seen it in action by a Black parent. Her children are 2 and 5 and they are the kindest, nicest toddlers I’ve ever met. They listen to her because she’s their mom and they automatically recognize she’s important and she gives them what they want (love and affection and rewards). In return they like to clean for her and give her artwork and cuddles all of the time.

To get them to listen to her, she makes sure to listen to them and what they’ve got to say instead of telling them to shut up all the time. The 5 year old asked her a few months ago why you can’t eat food that was on the floor after picking up food on the floor, and she explained it calmly and clearly. He asked 4 other questions after that and she answered all of them. He was satisfied and happy with the answers, and ever since he hasn’t done those things. She lets them gush and gush about Hot Wheels or Team Umizoomi and engages with them and counts with them and everything, so they never feel alone or neglected enough to not want to obey.

My friend lets them make mistakes by themselves on the rare chance they don’t listen so they can learn from them and let that be punishment enough. For example, the younger one we’ve been telling not to go near the dog cage because he doesn’t like dogs. He went near it a while ago, got his hand licked, freaked out, and hasn’t been anywhere near it since. The board on the wall that she uses has a column for each boy horizontally, and vertically are all the traits she wants them to have, like being nice, listening to her and their teachers, eating their food, cleaning up, having manners, etc. They get a sticker whenever they do it for the day, and they lose all their stickers when they break a habit. That’s enough punishment for them, so they don’t break it.

When they wake up, it’s cleanup time, or bedtime, she plays what she calls “musical habits”. She puts on a playlist of their favorite songs (it’s like 20-25 minutes) that make them feel motivated, and they should be finished getting ready or cleaning by the time the last song is over. If they’re not, they get a toy from their toy bin taken away or an Oreo from their snack bag taken out (aka eaten by her). But she hasn’t ever gotten to that because they always finish. They don’t even like hearing the consequences lol. And I just wanted to say I really enjoyed seeing good parenting by a Black woman that wasn’t abusive or harmful to the child’s development, it gave me inspiration and hope. Just had to talk about it somewhere.

A new video released Monday titled “The Talk” compellingly tackles the impact of racial bias through the lens of black parents in America.

This video accurately displays what it is like to be black in America. It shows the conversations all black parents have with their kids to keep them safe and to encourage them to fight the racist society. And it’s heartbreaking that parents need to remind their kids that their “Black is beautiful”.Society needs to change and time has come to talk about this.

Be Steadwell - Self described “Queer pop” musician. Her style mixes soul with acapella and folk, and her lyrics are usually explicitly gay. Her latest album “Queer love songs” should be on all our pride playlists.

Domo Wilson - 23 year old lesbian rapper/independent artist and youtuber. She released her debut album “hear me now” this year and it’s very emotional and heartfelt. I’d also reccomend checking out her videos!

IAMDDB - I swear this woman is some kind of gay even if I don’t know what. She says everything she does is “for her ladies” Her music has been described as “Trap-Jazz” and her song “Shade” is a current favorite.

Janelle Monae - Bi/Pan concept album mastermind. Her music is very hard to describe, but maybe alt-pop heavily influenced by hiphop? Also she can rap! Just listen to “Django Jane.” She released an album this year titled “Dirty Computer” and a gay accompanying short film of the same name.

Kehlani - Queer contemporary r&b/neo soul artist. Listen to “Honey.” She also did an amazing song with Hayley Kiyoko, as well as some very gay lyrics on other peoples tracks. Her verses in “Playinwitme”, “Body Count” and “Icy GRL” are some examples.

Kelela - Queer Ethiopian-American Alternative r&b/Electronic musician. She’s very inspiring, has a lot of interesting takes on the music industry, and makes awesome music.

Kodie Shane - One of my all time favorite artists, Kodie Shane is like a queer hiphop goddess delivering more and more gay energy upon us every year since she started. Listen to everything she’s ever made. Start with “Sing to her”, it’s her latest single.

Syd/The Internet - Syd is a lesbian r&b artist who also fronts the r&b group The Internet. She regularly uses feminine language in her songs and her mvs are the greatest things ever. Also, look at that cute lil smile!

Tiara Thomas - Tiara is a pop/hiphop/r&b artist. She’ll never label her sexuality because she doesn’t want it to become bigger than her music. Some gay songs are “Retro 1’s” and “I’m still at the bar.”

Tiffany Gouche - Lesbian r&b/soul singer. Her EP “Pillowtalk” is good as hell and she recently released three new singles “Queen Tings”, “Dive” and “Down.”
