10 tips for landing that job
2020 has seen a new level of competitiveness in the job market. What can you do to stand out from other candidates? RTO - We talk to employers, educators and HR experts about how to land that job.
Ever wondered why you missed out on getting that job?
Applying for jobs and being rejected can be a harrowing experience. We give you ten tips that help you put your best foot forward in a recruitment process and give you the best chance of landing that job.
Tip 1: Be confident
Anybody can have confidence. Being confident in yourself will show during a job interview process. Before making that phone call or walking into that meeting, be sure to take big breaths, stand up straight and remind yourself that you are more than capable of doing the job at hand. Go on, be confident!
Tip 2: Proofread your documents
There is nothing more off putting than reading a resume or cover letter that contains typos or grammar errors. Proofread everything you send to the recruiter/ employer. This includes emails, texts, letters and any other documents. If you are not confident yourself, ask a friend to proofread for you.
Tip 3: Upskill
Employers want employees who have qualifications. Consider taking a course in your field so you stand out from other applicants. There are plenty of free online courses through sites like Coursera.
No time for study? Talk to us at  RPL Australia about how to upskill without more study.
Tip 4: Don't give up
Getting knock backs for jobs really sucks. But you can't give up. Who's to say the person who got the job hadn't been looking for longer than you? Who's to say the next job you apply for might be the one you get? Keeping a positive attitude will lead to your success.
Tip 5: Get qualified
Most employers agree that employing staff with qualifications benefits their organisation. Having a qualification shows that you are dedicated and skilled.
Do you want to get qualified without doing any further study? You can do this by applying for recognised prior learning (RPL). RPL means that your prior work experience, skills or study can count towards a new qualification. Visit Recognition of Prior Learning to find out more about getting the officially recognised for what you already know.
Tip 6: Revamp your resume
Each job comes with a particular set of skills and each employer will be looking to see that you meet those skills. Ideally you should review and revise your resume for every job you apply for.
Ask yourself: Does your CV need to include that you were the captain of the athletics team in high school? Is your barista training relevant if you are applying for a job as a hairdresser?
For more information read how to write a killer CV.
Tip 7: Chat with a recruiter
Registering with a recruiting company that specialises in your field can help you find the right job. Some recruiters offer CV and cover letter writing services too. Recruiters usually offer their services free to job applicants so, what've you got to lose?
Tip 8: Take a volunteer role
Australia has one of the highest volunteer rates in the world with approximately 35% of Australians over 18 years old participating in some kind of volunteering activity every year. Not only is volunteering rewarding for the soul, it can also look great on your resume. Volunteering can lead to new opportunities and helps you meet new people. It is kind of like feel good networking!
Tip 9: Stay in touch
This tip is vital. Employers like to know that you are invested in the job. If you have questions about the job details or the application process, contact them and introduce yourself as a candidate.
If you've applied for the job and haven't heard anything for a week or two, call or write to check in on the process. And if you attend an interview, always call or write afterwards to thank them for the opportunity to meet in person. Not only does this show that you are keen on the job, it also demonstrates you are an ace communicator!
Tip 10: Be yourself
This one is simple. Not being genuine in your correspondence or putting on a show in an interview benefits no one. Recruiters, managers and experienced HR can tell when people are not being honest.
If the job asks for something that you don't have, for example, experience using a particular computer program, it is best to be honest and say you are not familiar with that program. You can quickly follow Best RPL by pointing out that you are familiar with other similar software and give an example of a time where you picked up a new skill quickly.

About RPL
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is the process of assessing your relevant prior learning (including formal and on the job learning) to determine whether you qualify for credit towards a qualification.
RPL can help you fast track your career or your study pathway. We know that you hold skills and knowledge gained through work experience or past study and that you want to gain recognition for that!
RPL can help you get paid more at work. The higher the qualification you hold, the more likely you are to get paid more. Really?! Yes, really! Studies show that workers who hold a certificate III, IV, diploma or advanced diploma will, on average, get paid 30% more than high school graduates.
In RPL Australia , there are literally thousands and thousands of qualifications to choose from, to suit almost any job, across almost any sector.
