This week has been all about Leather Protectors. We launched our line of Leather Protectors about 6 years ago. We took a novel approach by designing our protector based on the contours of the insulating rubber gloves that are worn underneath. Prior to that, protectors were made 2-dimensionally and flat - a top layer (back of hand) and a bottom layer (palm side) - with no regards to the rubber gloves they were fitting over. We knew that if we made a 3-dimensional protector, we could perfectly mirror the shape of the rubber gloves - thereby, creating a protector that was more form-fit resulting in greater dexterity. We also knew that we could use a higher quality leather on both the hand (e.g. water resistant cow grain on our Primaries) and the cuff (water resistant cow split) that would result in greater comfort, grip and durability. We also used a Flame Resistant Kevlar strap and Arc Rated fastener (no drip / no melt) in an effort to try an build the very best protector we possibly could. I am happy to report that the resulting products have been met with much enthusiasm amongst workers. We are diligently trying to keep up with the increase in demand from the leather side of things, but it has not been without its challenges. Due to the increase, we were having trouble getting enough of that soft, supple, beautiful leather that workers have come to expect from Youngstown. The good news is that we are working closely with the tannery to ramp up leather production for the long-term in an effort to produce and supply the very best protectors we can make. One thing is for certain, we will never sacrifice the quality of our materials or the craftsmanship of our products no matter what headwinds we may face. And we will always continue to improve our products and our processes behind the scenes for long-term growth and sustainability. Cheers!

We got a chance to sneak away for the weekend and head up to the cabin before a crazy spell of upcoming work travel. The weather was beautiful and the Fall colors are well underway. We love to go out on the water a couple hours before sunset and these photos show just how calm the water was at that time. We couldn’t have asked for better Fall weather. A little fishing, some family, friends, good food and a little time in the woods does the body good. Every time we get to the cabin is awesome, but Fall takes the cake. Super fun summer vacation up at the cabin. This was our first summer trip on the property - so fun to see all the trees, plants and wildflowers in bloom. Neat to see how and where the sun travels throughout the day. Really excited to paint this canvas with natives for the pollinators and wildlife. There is shoreline, wetlands and woodlands; sandy soil, wet soil, dry soil; shade, partial sun and full sun - so lots of different plants, flowers and trees that thrive in each of the different places. It was also really cool to see what the land does when it is untouched - as we haven’t done much to it since last September/October. This trip was 100% family and 100% awesome. Fun to fish the lake every morning and night. Fun to have morning coffee in the Adirondack chairs out front watching the birds, squirrels and chipmunks. Fun to watch the solitary doe pay a visit almost every day. Fun to let the dog run and be a dog. It was great to be back in nature. It’s good for the soul. Fun to hang out in the garage at night and play pool and darts. Thanks, as always, to our wonderful neighbors @dawnten40 and Todd. You guys are the best. Thank you to @mechellemalone for all of your help, work and support in making our little place in the sticks so cozy and fun. We look forward to our next trip out in the Fall to sow some wildflower seeds from @mnlcorp and let the natural growing process begin. It will only get more beautiful with time. Remembering my Momma today. Woke up to these beauties this morning. Gardenias were her favorite flower and these have found a perfect spot to thrive in some morning dappled shade. Just beautiful. Love you, Mom. (at Faircrest Heights, Los Angeles) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQG3owUpFrx/?utm_medium=tumblr

Just finished an absolutely incredible and beautiful book on landscape design - ‘Planting In A Post-Wild World’ by Thomas Rainer and Claudia West. The book was laden with gems, but saved the best for the very last paragraph of the book: ‘If it is true that the next renaissance of human culture will be the reconstruction of the natural world in our cities and suburbs, then it will be designers, not the politicians, who will lead this revolution. And plants will be at the center of it all.’ Amen. (at MSP Airport) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPY3U1PJLTN/?utm_medium=tumblr

Good morning from the jungle! Looks like another beautiful day to be had in paradise. Lots to do today which might include getting a new tool for driving screws into dense hardwood. It’s all very exciting. We’ll see. Lots to do today. (at Faircrest Heights, Los Angeles) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPOFThzpwM7/?utm_medium=tumblr

We now have 3 buds open on the ‘second chance orchid’! This little plant was left for dead 2 years ago and is a testament to nature’s resilience. After getting rid of the dead roots and replanting it, it immediately rebounded and took about 2 years to muster up enough strength and grow a cane which is now blooming. The flowers are so cool looking! We also have the little brother to this one that was also ‘saved’ and looks to be a couple months behind it’s older sibling. Should have an office full of healthy orchids by next month. So awesome. (at Youngstown Glove Company) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPBju4uJuWC/?utm_medium=tumblr

Bush Anemone. Aka Carpenteria Californica. Super cool plant. Believe it comes from the hydrangea family. About a 3 foot tall perennial evergreen that shoots out about 50-100 flowers this time every year. I like the flowers. They look like fried eggs. Great for mass plantings. Low water requirements. Full sun. (at Faircrest Heights, Los Angeles) https://www.instagram.com/p/CO5vvhhJ0Uu/?igshid=nawgp91slmwz

Quinoa and black bean tacos. If plant based eating has taught me anything, it is this. So incredibly delicious. This meal has become a ‘once a weeker’. Do yourself a healthy favor and google the recipe, find one that speaks to you and make it your own. You won’t be disappointed.
