The best part about getting a job is that you can then ignore that place’s Idiot Rules. I work at a nature center and I am allowed to trample through the woods off-trail as much as I like, pick up frogs “for science” (read: gits and shiggles), and stand waaaay too close to the pond to skim out fish

‘tis delightful because I’m a small ish teenage girl and these big men pass me on the trail and ask if they can camp or whatever in the woods and I’m like “No Sir We Need To Protect Native Insect Habitat” and they can’t argue with me

Some rules in society are so-called "idiot rules" that are only in place for idiots. The Thing You're Not Supposed To Do can be done safely, but since an idiot can't do it, they have to officially prohibit it from everyone. And if you do fuck it up and end up eating shit, you're best off dusting yourself off, hoping that nobody saw you, and never tell anyone that you even tried, so they won't find out that you're an idiot.

My local theatre has a brick wall completely covered in kiss marks. Thousands of them, on a massive wall. Some of them clearly made by hanging off the ledge of the walkway above and making the kiss upside down. There are some that must be twenty years old.

When I was seven, and had just finished my first play there, an older girl told me about the tradition, had me pick out a spot, helped me reapply my lipstick, and told me to kiss it. It was lover then most, because I was a little kid. She told me that everyone did it after their first performance, because now they were a part of the theatre’s history.

Every play after that, I would visit the wall of marks. Several years later I did the same, telling a younger friend that it was her turn, passing on the tradition. She had had some stage fright to get over, but when she persevered I was very proud of her.

Five years after I eventually quit, I came back. I couldn’t remember where my mark was. Certainly, hundreds had been added in the years I’d been absent. But somewhere, my little seven year old self’s imprint, on one of the most formative nights of my life, is preserved.

My two yr old is looking through a book about prehistoric art and she saw a picture of those cave painting of hands and she held up her own and said "hand!" And I gotta be honest. That hit
