Stories are obviously a theme throughout Moffat’s Who, but I think they are especially important for Clara and her character arc. I was thinking about the quote “History is a burden, but stories can make us fly,” which is from a Clara episode, and it reminded me of the part in The Rings of Akhaten when Clara says, “Blimey, I hated history.” That’s always seemed incongruous to me because what Merry Gejelh knew were songs and stories, not dry pieces of fact, and Clara - a storyteller and English teacher - loves stories. But while Bill and Amy both have a favourite piece of history (and it’s Roman Britain for both of them, oddly enough), Clara’s is Robin Hood, a folk legend, an impossible hero.
Clara doesn’t want cumbersome history, with its facts and actualities. Going back again to The Rings of Akhaten, remember that she saves the day not with the events that actually happened - which is what Eleven attempts to do - but with the things that didn’t. What saves them is all the days that never came, the stories that Clara made up and invested in the leaf of everything that she could have had with her mother, everything that she felt like her mother’s early death robbed her of.
This is tied in with the less savory aspects of Clara’s character: her willingness to lie and manipulate, spinning a story rather than telling the truth, and her refusal to accept things such as Danny’s death. But it is also what makes her shake her head and say, no, don’t destroy Gallifrey, I don’t care if you’ve already done it, you cannot do it. It is what allows her in Flatline to stand up and spin a story with herself as the hero, saving people’s lives - one episode after she sees the Doctor do the same by pretending to be heartless. It is something that she and the Doctor share, a refusal to bow to history, and sometimes, like with Ten in The Waters of Mars, that is wrong.
But it is also the founding principle of the show, and that’s reflected in Clara’s ending as well. That ending - her death - is written in history. It’s set in stone; the universe needs her to die, as it once needed the Doctor to. But that doesn’t stop her from taking the long way round, from filling in the edges of history with impossible stories.

Phoning Martha Jones
Recently I was listening to The Doctor’s Daughter commentary, and RTD mentioned offhand that he originally wanted Ten, when waving goodbye to Martha Jones, to make a “call me” gesture. It was cut out because they thought it would undermine the solemnity of the scene, which was probably a wise decision, but now I’ve set up a new headcanon that the Doctor calls Martha and moans to her whenever he needs a Doctor.
“Marthaaaa, nobody wants to travel with me.”
“Is it because you’re a right misery and you never wash your dishes?”
“….probably. Is that shooting behind you?”
“Yeah, Mickey and I are being shot at by three hundred troops of Mire on a planet that’s in the middle of a nuclear war and rapidly losing oxygen. Can this wait?”
“But I’m lonelyyyyyy, Martha.”
“Oh my god.”
“Marthaaaa, my stomach hurts.”
“Did your voice change?”
“Yeah, regeneration, try to stay focused, Jones. Does that pink stuff you left in the bathroom work?”
“DOCTOR, NO, that’s my shampoo!”
“At least my stomach smells like grapefruit now. Do you pluralize grapefruit? Grapefruits? Grapefruiti?”
“Oh my god.”
“Marthaaaa, I’m being erased from existence.”
“New phone, who this?“
“Oh my god MARTHA NO”
“Marthaaaa, River can’t come with me to the grand opening of the Iron Maiden Tree Nursery in the year 6577 on the planet Woot, are you busy?”
“Who’s River?”
“She’s got the space curls of a god.”
“I’m in a jacuzzi. I’m not getting out.”
“Well, okay, can Mickey come? I think this dress would fit him.”
“He says no. He’s in the jacuzzi too.”
“You two hang out a lot, don’t you?”
“We’re married, Doctor.”
“Marriage. That’s a good idea. I should do that.”
“Oh my god.”

“Sorry, is this you having flashbacks to 2010?”
“No. I’m living on a cloud in the Victorian era.”

“Yeah yeah I know, I know, not the pink stuff. I’m not an idiot, Jones. Are you—are you chuckling?? Do I hear Mickey? Are you chuckling at something Mickey said???? Well you just tell him—”

“Is that an echo effect?”
“No, there are three of us on the line. Hello!/Morning, Jones!/Wait, who are we talking to?”
“What! Mickey, get over here. Which of you is it?”
“The attractive one/the one who isn’t an idiot/No, really, who are we talking to?”
“That is so funny. Mickey, go tell them we’ve got three over here.”
“What? What?/Go tell who? Jones, who are you talking to?/Is this somebody important we’re talking to?”
“Your fourth through ninth incarnations say hello. They’re having tea with us.”
“WHAT!/We weren’t invited?!/Oh, this Martha Jones, I remember now.”
“The one with the Northern accent just said ‘oh my god.’”
“Marthaaaa.”
“Hello? Who is this?”
“It’s me, the Doctor. Why does everybody question who I am? Is it the voice?”
“Are you Scottish now? Blimey.”
“I regenerated—Clara thinks it’s because of Daleks, but actually I just ate the pink shampoo. Always lying. Never mind. Martha, I need you to look up dream crabs, all possible sources of them, what they like to eat, best means of transport, and what the capital of Denmark is. I’ve forgotten.”
“Doctor, I’m being attacked by Chumblies at a convention of masked lunatics, can this wait?”
“Well, I guess I’ll just crack into that new Ben and Jerry’s as I die from loneliness, a poor old man who can’t even get a friend to look up obscure alien fauna for him.”
“Fine. Mickey, give me your laptop.”
“Actually, no, wait, Santa just showed up. Never mind.”

After listening to Moffat stating earnestly that the reason she saves him is to save the love of her life even if it comes at a great personal sacrifice, I don’t know how The Doctor could have said anything other than that he loves her.
He’s a stranger to her but not only is he whispering his feelings in her ear, but he’s behaving as if he’s in love with her. As much as Amy and Rory were good friends to her, this is a woman who was kidnapped and raised by monsters with a single mission in life – murder. And here she is face to face with someone who is selflessly fighting for her when, from her perspective, he should have absolutely no reason to. He’s dying and all he’s trying to do is save her. Help her. Teach her. All this for no other reason than that he cares.
How could anyone go through life knowing they have killed the love of their life? So she saves him. She’s choosing to believe that her fate is to love him rather than murder him. Because up until this day, she believed she had no other choice. Suddenly, she is seeing an entirely different future for herself and she knows the only way to save that future is to save him – the man who loves her and who she will love. The complete opposite of everything she’s been conditioned to believe.

steven moffat is a good writer. people think he’s a mystery-box writer, and he isn’t. he spins plots that are like … mystery-box-adjacent because the characters are scared of looking into the box and finding something as mundane and powerful as “love” at its center. the object for the characters’ quest is the relief that comes from realizing they are loved and won’t be abandoned and that they don’t have to be excessively smart or cynical or isolated to succeed. one of my favorite things to see in fiction is a.) a writer who is not cynical writing b.) characters who are afraid to stop being cynical. The structure of the narrative becomes a way to show how far the characters have to go to avoid sentimentality, only to run smack into it and become completely unnerved for the better.

It's getting to the point where I think I'm part of the anti anti Moffatcirclejerk, which is insane because I don't like how he handled Amy's pregnancy, I don't like how a lot of his female characters could be stereotyped, and I really disliked how Amy treated Rory. (*I understand why, but I didn't like it.) One thing I strongly disliked about the era was the abuse of male characters played off as a joke(see: slapping the doctor, Rory etc). Also, Danny Pink should have been treated better by the narrative, but I do appreciate that he consciously tried to do better by Bill.

Lol literally saying they don't want to upset anyone then launching into a full on attack on Moffat and calling him an inept writer 🤣🤣🤣 The man had a career before Sherlock and Who, has four or five Hugo awards, and has written some of the best regarded episodes in Doctor Who history. Honestly the tumblr anti-Moffat circlejerk makes me want to puke because a) he's a good writer b) for dw, any criticism at him can 99% be applied to your favorite showrunner c) people straight up lying and twisting his words and taking them out of context d) when he delivers ppl call it pandering

Delgado. He wants people to believe he has multiple brain cells, but his tendency to make extremely bad alliances and throw himself onto moving vehicles says otherwise.
