Damn, rewatched some of part 2 now that part 3 is coming out and I'm seeing just how much they put Robby though the ringer. That Zara thing was the straw breaking the camel's back. I pray she doesn't pop up pregnant in part 3 and they force some Johnny parallel, that's my biggest fear for these next 5 episodes. Tory can beat her up and that better be the last time she shows up on screen.

There's a certain demographic of the Cobra Kai fandom that's honest to god braindead and tragically that's who the writers cater to more often than not.

The season 6 finale closes with a tearful, sentimental montage of all the parents waving their children goodbye as they head off to college, with the final shot being Daniel, Amanda, and Shannon saying goodbye to Robby after helping him settle into his dorm room. As Shannon cries outside the building and Daniel comforts her with a consoling hand on her shoulder proclaiming “don’t worry, this will be really good for him!” the audience thinks wow, Robby must have worked really hard to graduate on time with the rest of the kids, good for him! Until the camera pans out and you see the bold lettering on the building reading ENCINO PSYCHIATRIC FACILITY

Does it bother anyone else that the girls in Cobra Kai mostly fight with their hair down?? Like babe, I just know it's getting in your eyes and sticking to your forehead. Tie it up, I beg.

How Cobra Kai Fails Robby Keene
Tumblr media
Yes, this is about both the show and the characters in it. And no, this is not meant to hate on the show or any character whatsoever. What I will point out is something the show is showing us through its framing, writing, and narrative choices. These are the 3 keywords I will be using a lot in this essay. Please make sure that you fully understand their meaning to understand what I say better.
[Word count - 3.8k words. I got carried away. What’s new?]
With the disclaimers out of the way, let’s go, baby!
Robby Keene is easily the most intriguing character in Cobra Kai to me. Mostly because I couldn’t slot him in any archetype when I started watching.
He isn’t the protagonist – he is billed 5th and introduced all the way in the 4th episode. He is not the quintessential hero or good guy because he is introduced as running scams. That should mean that he is the antagonist? Well, stealing some money so you can have food and having remorse while doing it really disqualifies you for that. He is neither the a-hole with the heart of gold because my guy is so quiet in nature.
The closest I could come up with was him being someone like Katniss Everdeen, the protagonist of the Hunger Games series. She doesn’t have a distinct personality because all her energy goes into survival. Similarly, Robby doesn’t fit in any clear archetype because all his energy goes into survival as well. He regularly chucks his self-esteem down the drain and does what he needs to to survive – from running scams to allowing being bullied.
Robby’s story has been fascinating all through S1 to S4. I’m amused at how much prominence he holds in the narrative while simultaneously being treated unfairly than other characters. He is the 4th main character and is directly in competition with Miguel. And things are pretty bleak for the guy…

So I just watched the season 5 trailer (I know pretty late) and it looks like Johnny takes Robby to Mexico but without telling him they're going to find Miguel, at least at first. Like???
So Robby agreed thinking ok a father son trip, still a lot of issues between them but still agreed to the trip only to find out it's about Miguel, again. Yikes, that's gotta hurt a little bit.
I love Miguel too so I'm glad Johnny is going to get him back but... where was this energy when Robby ran away 🤨 Johnny? You literally gave up mid search but for Miguel you're gonna cross the border and fight the people of Mexico? I hope they beat you up Johnny.

When you're sad because your hurt/comfort Robby fic is more hurt than comfort and then you get even sadder because that's what it's like in canon too.

For being one of the main rivalries of the show, Miguel and Robby really don't interact much.
