That would honestly explain so much! Of all the characters in Deltarune that cross with Undertale, the only one notably absent is Papyrus (heck, we've met Mad and Onionsan before Paps), almost like he's been forgotten about.

Ok, so I've been thinking about the egg & tree rooms in Deltarune. Each are located in "in between" spaces where we find a "forgettable" man. The game seems to make a big deal about "in between" states of being, where lost things fall between the cracks and are forgotten.

Guess WHO else in hometown talks about "in-between" states of being?

AND he just happens to have a brother who is described as "forgettable" in UT's no-mercy run flavor text. During Papyrus's date, an egg shows up on the "dating" hud. Now I'm not saying that Papyrus is 100% the forgettable man, BUT something is going on here with the skelebros.

First, great art!

Yeah, Gaster, especially after chapter 3, strikes me as someone who is no longer an antagonist or a protagonist; instead, he's above it all. It's his deltarune, he made it. He's an author watching us go through his story, which is really interesting in this specific case because he is both diagetic and non-diagetic to his own creation; he's both a completely removed character and an integral part of his own story. To me it feels like Toby exploring all the aspects of narrative: we've got the relationship between the player and the protagonist, and now the relationship between the writer and the story. Gaster loves his creation in the same way a writer loves their story and characters, but he's still a writer and wants to see that story unfold.

So what does that mean when your characters are living, thinking, desperate to be free of the story you've written?

To whom it might concern,

Gaster is not the villain of the story. He's not evil/abusive/something else. He's a father, a loving one to an extent. Yes, he created his children with the prophecy in mind, yeah fulfilling the prophecy is their main goal, but they're more to him than just his tools

It's like when you read a story and something bad happens in it. You refuse to acknowledge it, and go to create/enjoy fanfictions, art etc. where everything is okay and everyone is happy. Yes, you know it's not how the story goes but you still play pretend

They also play pretend but sometimes it's hard

Also: Gaster is a scientist. He knows how to be one. He doesn't know how to be a father

What's really evocative to me in all the new revelations and hints about Kris' true nature and intentions in Chapter 4 is the impression that... Kris is never free.

When they are free of our direct control, they are still not acting 100% of their real desires, they are following the orders of some evil Voice(s?) on the phone.

The ending seem to imply some sort of emotional conflict between them wanting to help out Susie, who is very dear to their heart, and following this plan which is probably not beneficial to her. A plan that they have to follow cause...

When Kris is not controlled by our very literal puppet-strings, they are instead controlled by the coercion and emotional manipulation of their mysterious benefactor. No matter which option they go with, Kris just cannot be free.
