SHE GOES quiet for a long moment from his responses . perhaps she was being unfair , too harsh . though she's never really been good at softening her words . but still . clearly he's struggling and her judgement can't be helping .

he changes the subject , after something of a compliment no less , and it leaves raven a little unsteady . she should probably apologize . but he's given her an out and , selfishly , she's going to take it .

"I don't regret telling you to go." He shakes his head a little as Raven brings that up. "You asked what happened - that is the answer. That doesn't take away the fact that I want you to always do what you need to do. You don't belong to me, you never have. That was what you wanted to do and I wasn't going to get in the way. Same with Erik."

"I'm not a drug addict. Hank developed a treatment for my spine but as a side effect it represses my powers." There's a short silence. "It's nice.. not hearing all those voices. Quiet." He had enough pain of his own to live with, he didn't need everyone else's.

"You weren't my mother, and you're still not now. You were better than her." Another short silence, before the professor turns his head, blue eyes finding hers. "Why are you here?"

SHE HADN'T expected him to look at her and essentially tell her no . not as in ' no you're wrong , ' but NO , as in ' how you feel about that truth is wrong . ' she doesn't really say these things out loud , so when she does they have to be qualified with something , a way to cushion it so it feels less VULNERABLE . but peter looks her in the face and rips the vulnerability out of her , right to the surface . . . . it's terribly uncomfortable .

his gaze doesn't waver , but hers does , glancing away and to the side as if she can find a proper response there . ❝ i'm not a SCAREDY CAT , ❞ she mutters , clearly ruffled . his question is personal , probing . though given he's the person she considers her best friend , she fucking SUPPOSES he's allowed to ask .

her jaw works , because despite her protestation , she is scared . of so much . but especially of losing things , of losing HIM . she opens her mouth , starts to speak , but then closes it again , trying to form what she wants to say . how do you bare your heart while trying to keep it safe ?

❝ because what if you leave again ? ❞ she finally says , lifting her gaze back up to meet his . ❝ what if you go and this time you don't come back ? ❞ it comes out a little more accusatory than she means it to be , but she doesn't take it back or try to soften it . that's not really in her nature .
