BLOOD ON THEIR HANDS
A puddle of dark, red, liquid lies on the ground. Snowflakes fall in to it. The camera rises up as the liquid begins to drip past the camera. Hands enter the frame covered in the liquid. It drips from in-between the fingers. The camera falls back down and focuses on the blood before the footage cuts out and the logo or the National Rifle Association appears.
This piece is in response to all of the mass shootings that have happened in America in recent years, and politicians’ inability to pass any effective legislation because the NRA is in their pocket. The NRA stands firmly against any type of gun control because their primary goal is to sell more guns. Because they have stood in the way of gun reform that could’ve saved lives and actively stand against those try to make a positive change that saves lives, they’re the target of this video.
I was inspired to make this after the Las Vegas shooting, but didn’t. After the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, I was moved to finally make it. I think it was very successful. I think the color correction makes the red pop in a very haunting way, and the slow motion really adds weight. The score and diegetic sounds I added really do give the video a sense of place as well. However, if I could do it again I would ask my subject to remove their phone from their pocket.
