Viral Interventions: Final Artifact (2D)

For our artifact, we decided to display our cage with the QR codes and the three items: a pride flag, a paper uterus stuffed with cotton, and an expired passport, as we had it displayed for our presentation. We decided to bring our exact set up from during our presentation since our message speaks on a lack of control from bans, therefore, a cage is too vague as are the three items alone, and the cage with only one issue, may feel like we are pushing aside the other issues, making them seem less important and serious. We also included the QR codes, in case there's anyone who looks at our artifact and could use the QR codes.
Materials: Cage, pride flag, paper uterus stuffed with cotton, expired passport, and laminated paper with resourceful QR codes.
Dimensions: Approximately 25 inches long, 19 inches wide, and 19 inches tall.

Viral Interventions: Final Documentation (2D)

In accordance with our sentence: “What the politician banned is diminishing our control”, we decided to acquire a cage and put inside of it a pride flag, a uterus made of paper and stuffed with cotton, and an expired passport. We chose these specific items since the right to abortion, LGBTQ+ rights, and immigration, are laws and rights that have been debated recently, leading to restrictions. On top of the cage, a paper with QR codes link to helpful resources is displayed that those who pass by could stop and scan if they are interested. Moreover, by adding these items into a cage, we show a literal lack of accessibility over them, which mirrors reality. We decided to set this up in front of a nearby courthouse, since these issues all surround laws and politics. We first left the cage alone with the items to see if there would be a difference in reaction, so that maybe people may be more inclined to check it out. Afterwards, we all stood by the cage, waiting to see if anyone would interact. Collectively, we decided to wear all black, to appear more uniform and professional. However, the courthouse was very empty, few people passed by during both times and none interacted with us, save for a few stares. We stood for about 30 minutes before two security guards from the courthouse approached us, questioning what we were doing and making sure it was not a protest. We calmly explained to them it was just an art project and they understood but requested we’d leave the premise, so we did. For the video, we decided to showcase our process in preparing our piece, the presentation and the conversation we had, with emotional music in the background since these were serious topics we were covering.
Medium: Third District Court of Appeal.
Materials: Cage, laminated paper of resourceful QR codes, tripod, paper uterus stuffed with cotton, expired passport, and pride flag.
Dimensions: Approximately 25 inches long, 19 inches wide, and 19 inches tall.

Viral Interventions: Final Artifact (3D)

For our final artifact, we decided to showcase the bag of trash we collected as well as the grabbers we used to pick up the trash. Like our sentence suggests, these pieces of trash and our grabbers are nothing eye-catching or grandeur, but they are still heroic objects because they helped clean up a beach. Although it was not a grand amount, a little is still something, and eventually that will all add up and amount to more. Therefore, displaying the trash and trash grabbers on a pedestal allows it to take importance at this small stage of its existence.
Materials: Trash bags, trash, and trash grabbers.
Dimensions: Approximately 1 1/2 feet long and 2 feet tall.

Viral Interventions: Final Documentation (3D)
Our sentence was “My 9-5 routine may not be eye-catching or grandeur, but it is still heroic”. For our final documentation, we uploaded a 10:34 minute long video, which showcases our process as we cleaned the beach and wrote our sentence, along with adversities we faced and interactions we had. The wind was particularly strong that Saturday, reaching around 15 MPH, which slowed down our clean-up process a bit and also didn’t allow for the drone to work properly. The beach was pretty empty the entire time we were there, we assume due to the strong winds, however, we did have two interactions: one person walked by and said what we were doing was creative, and the other curiously asked what we were doing. There was another person who walked right through our piece but they did not interact. On account of the beach attendance being very minimal, we were only able to distribute 3 of our 150 affirmation cards to the group of the person who asked what we were up to. Moreover, writing in the sand was much more difficult than we expected and the beach was already pretty clean so we did not have enough trash to form our sentence. This resulted in us using seaweed that had washed up to write out our sentence. Overall, our project did not turn out exactly how we envisioned, with the unexpected lack of people, lack of trash, and strong winds, but we were able to adapt and work around all of our difficulties. We worked from around 12:30 PM to around 4:30 PM– we tried to capture and show this process and passage of time with the number of videos and repetitive nature of our actions. We encapsulate the idea of “a little makes a big difference”, which is the action of us cleaning up, with our sentence and project– how cleaning up little bits of trash off the beach everyday is nothing astounding or grand but it is still important because those small amounts add up.
Medium: Haulover Beach.
Materials: Trash bags, trash grabbers, trash, and seaweed.
Dimensions: Approximately 40 feet long and 35 inches tall.

Viral Interventions: Final Proposal (2D)

For our final proposal, we decided to go with the idea of the caged uterus, however, with some modifications. Now, we have added two more prevalent issues: LGBTQ+ rights and immigration, as well as our location now being in front of a courthouse, rather than just a busy sidewalk like the original proposal had suggested. Here, we will display a pride flag, a fake uterus, and an expired passport all in a cage. This would symbolize how these rights are now being ‘locked up’ with restrictions and therefore out of one's control. We decided to lay these items flat on the base of the cage rather than hanging them up so people have to look closer to see what these items are and, since we will be standing beside the cage, we can speak with them and encourage them to interact.
Medium/materials: Digital art on a tablet.

Viral Interventions: Tasks (2D)

For this assignment, I worked on the production task list part. I decided to depict our tasks as if it was a task list banner in a video game as I thought it would be a fun and different way to organize our tasks. We each made our own avatar using the website: https://www.avatarsinpixels.com/, which I implemented into the task list banner so we each appear as different playable characters in the game, set with our tasks to complete. I thought of this as a spinoff to a checklist that was more artistic and open to design and creativity.

Viral Interventions: Final Proposal (3D)

We decided to do the beach clean-up idea as well as combining it with the idea of the care packages. For our final proposal, we have depicted the scene of two of us in the forefront cleaning up trash from the beach, while the other two in the background are about to give a care package to a family visiting the beach. We will split the work between two groups as mentioned– two members will work on cleaning up trash from the beach, while the other two will work on passing out the pre-made care packages to any beach visitors they encounter. We decided to combine these two ideas, in order to reach and help out more than with just one idea. Moreover, we can help our community not just by cleaning up the beach but also the people nearby.

Viral Interventions: Budget (3D)

For my portion of our project Paul worked on organizing the budget. Our project is straight forward and simple, so putting the budget together was a breeze. Paul wanted nothing but good items. Paul was able to find sales because of black Friday and cyber-Monday. He found Reacher Grabbers on sale with free shipping from amazon. He used multiple sources for a good price to get our items. Home Depot has sales for cyber-Monday and Heavy-Duty trash bags were at a good price. Paul was able to save 20 percent off on it. I think our biggest purchase is going to be our cards with words of affirmation. This is the most important element for our Viral Project. He found a deal for one hundred and thirty-eight dollars and eighty cents. Which Is good. One step closer to finishing the project.

Viral Interventions: Timeline (3D)

For this assignment, I worked on the timeline part. I decided to depict our schedule through a watercolor art piece of a series of written letters blowing through the wind. I dated the letters with the dates we have scheduled and wrote what we will be doing on those days as the content for the letters. I thought this would be an interesting and different way to show our timeline, plus the floating letters through the city alludes to littering– which is what our sentence and video will be about. I highlighted the dates and underlined the keypoints so it is easier to read, as well as drawing the wind to help guide the eye a bit between the letters.
