Chapter 3 Excerpt

She jolts, startled to find him waiting outside her hut. His appearance is unexpected.

“Sesshomaru?”

He studies her. There is an uncomfortably long pause as his eyes roam over her form. When he finally speaks, it is with the same detached tone Kagome has grown accustomed to hearing. “I have come to request an audience with you.”

“Okay,” she replies automatically. 

Apparently, her response serves as approval for him to enter her home. 

Sesshomaru ducks his head to clear the doorway. Kagome follows, unhindered by the clearance. 

He halts a few paces from the entrance, surveying her living area. Kagome stands by the door, unsure how to proceed. She and Sesshomaru exchange a handful of words when they meet. Their interactions are sparse. His reason for coming here is as clear as an overcast sky. 

“So…how have you been?” Kagome asks, breaking the awkward silence. 

“Rin told me you helped her. I offer my gratitude.” He bows.

“It’s fine,” Kagome says, waving her hands back and forth. The formal gesture makes her uncomfortable. “I’m glad she was interested and wanted to learn more about what I do. Honestly, I should be thanking her. My clinic may have never taken off without Rin.”

Sesshomaru gives her a quizzical look.

“What I mean is I’m grateful. Rin shared her experience with others. They don’t hide from me anymore. They trust me again.”

“They should. They owe you their lives.”

Kagome stares at him. She is shocked Sesshomaru cares— even more so that he acknowledged her. 

“Your clinic is open to anyone, correct?”

She nods. 

“May I request your services?” 

“Rin and Kohaku are already receiving treatment.”

“For myself,” Sesshomaru states.

How cute is it that the first person Mabel thought (when Oliver and Charles weren't available) to help her with moving out was Theo? Like...AIHOSFIUHPAOFIHWOP! Also, she's learned so much more sign language since they last time were together.

The hour has grown late. She should have returned by now.

He scans the horizon. The sun hangs low, a red orb sinking beneath the mountains. The sight makes him uneasy. Instantly, he leaps into the sky.

The miko’s scent is faint but he manages to pick up on her trail. It leads Sesshomaru to a secluded village. As he nears, he picks up on dozens of scents varying from yokai to hanyo, and human. The miko is not among them.

He lands in the town center. His eyes immediately seek out an indicator of where she may be.

A hanyo female steps toward him. "Who are you?"

He ignores her. The miko is no longer in the vicinity. Her scent has gone stale. Aggravated, he turns to the hanyo. “Where is she?”

“Who?"

“Do not be coy. Where is the miko?”

The hanyo studies him. She is not intimidated as others are. He would admire her confidence if the delay did not increase his fear that something has happened. Considering the condition of the village, he is certain her plans went awry.

A panther yokai appears from one of the huts that remain standing. “They took her.” 

“Who?” Sesshomaru growls.

“The Nightwalkers— rogue demon slayers. She was helping us get rid of them and then...,” he trails off, head hanging in shame. “One minute she was behind me and the next… I’m sorry.”

Sesshomaru does not stay to hear the rest of the panther’s apology. He will find the miko and kill all in his way.
