Australia is in Crisis.

Hello, tumblr. 

Some of you might be vaguely aware of the horrific climate emergency in Eastern Australia right now. Some of you probably don’t know anything about it. Either way, I want to shed light on what we’re currently experiencing right now and raise awareness because far from being the ‘lucky country’, it feels like we’re approaching the apocalypse. 

I’m making this post to try and raise awareness, because it feels like no one but Australian’s are talking about this. It feels like we’re alone out here on our dusty, smoky, dying island, without any aid from the rest of the world.

Please read this, and then reblog. I will also share links at the bottom for agencies and charities who are in desperate need of donations. 

What’s happening in Australia?

New South Wales, Australia is currently experiencing the worst drought in living memory. 65% of Queensland is also suffering through drought, with other states all experiencing lower than average rainfall. Towns are running out of water. Water restrictions are so tight, people can’t shower or wash their clothes. One town in western NSW has to have their water delivered to them, because their rivers are dry. 

Farmers are suffering. Animals are suffering because they can’t be fed. Indigenous culture is suffering because their connection to the land is being disrupted. Last week, a farmer near where I live (central western NSW) lost over one thousand cattle to the RSPCA because he was unable to feed them. Prices for food are going up, which means people are unable to feed themselves properly either. 

But that’s not all.

Queensland and New South Wales are on fire. Over Two million hectares (nearly 5m acres) of bushland has been burned this fire season, and we are currently only six days into summer. By comparison, less than one million hectares (around 2.2m acres) was burned in the 2019 amazon wildfires. Koalas are in real danger of becoming functionally extinct as a result of these fires. People have lost their lives, and our fire fighters are at risk every single day they are out there trying to control the uncontrollable.

The air quality in NSW is so bad, people with respiratory conditions have been continuously warned to remain inside. Sydney is stuck under a blanket of smoke, and has had worse air quality than Beijing more than once.

And what is our government doing about this?

Absolutely. Utterly Buttfuck Nothing. 

Our government is made up of evangelical morons with their heads in the sand and continuously deny climate change. They (both the governing Australian Liberal National Party, and the opposition Australian Labor Party) refuse to take decisive action on climate change. Australia is NOT on track to meet its already inadequate Emissions Reduction Target, and our Prime Minister would rather go and hang out with billion dollar corporations for a photo op, and offer ’thoughts and prayers’ while our country burns. He also likes to claim that there is ‘no link between climate emissions and the bushfires’ despite being warned repeatedly by multiple fire chiefs that this season could be our worst on record. 

Scott Morrison is more worried about kids ditching school to protest against climate change than he is the 608 homes that have burned and families that have been displaced by these fires.

Australia is suffering, our government doesn’t care, and we need the international audience to know about it.

I’m trying to start drawing and posting art consistently again. It’s not easy, I took a few years off pretty much, and my quality suffered for it. But, I miss drawing, and miss interacting with people through art.

I participated in #TransDayofVisibility a few years back on tumblr with a since deleted post, and after that I was quiet as I hit a stagnant point with my transition for a few years due to my health. But I decided several months ago to not let my health keep me back anymore. Today, I am proud to participate once more.

1. Are you named after anyone?

Nah, both my parents knew they wanted to name their kid my name before they even met, so my name was set in stone ages ago. It was fate.

2. When was the last time you cried?

Last night. 

3. Do you have kids?

Nope.

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?

Not as much as I once did. My sarcasm didn’t ring well with people and certainly didn’t translate well online in text chats, so I had to change my humor around.

5. What’s the first thing you notice about people?

If they’re nice to me.

6. What is your eye color?

Hazel.

7. Scary movie or happy ending?

I like scary movies more except their endings usually are lame so happy movie ending I suppose.

8. Any special talents?

No, I’m useless.

9. Where were you born?

Hospital, but it was during a record breaking snow storm, my mom and I were snow locked into the hospital for several days.

10. What are your hobbies?

Writing, art, playing games to avoid my crippling depression, sleeping to ignore the things I should be doing, and long walks on the beach.

11. Do you have any pets?

Technically no. I live with a few other peoples animals, but I haven’t had my own in while.

12. What sports do you play/have you played?

Track, Badminton, Gymnastics, Swimming, DDR (yes its a sport if you go hard core I sweat more for this than anything), and Skateboarding. That all ended before high school was over though.

13. How tall are you?

Seven cats tall, give or take.

14. Favorite subject in school?

Science and Math. They were simple finite equations and information. Plus the teachers actually gave a damn about other students not being a dick to me. You’ll like anything if you have a safe place to learn it I guess.

15. Dream job?

Work at a game studio, or an animation studio. I did wanna be a Veterinarian when I was younger but <<insert fucked up memory here>> so that idea hasn’t been with me in a long time.

It’s Keith’s birthday. He deserves only the best.

He’s mostly asleep, but not quite deep enough to be completely unconscious at this time of the morning. Keith’s mind supplies the source, being a particularly strange dream that he’ll forget the second he wakes properly and won’t have the care to try and recall. It’s not until his subconscious begins supplying reasons for what he’s feeling that he begins to rouse, and he’s rather fond of the fact that the real reason for it is far nicer than almost anything his sleepy brain can conjure to explain it away.

Lance’s harebrained ideas usually result in Shiro wishing he’d taken on some other student as his charge when he joined the mentoring program at their university. This time though, he finds himself almost needing to lie on the ground at Lance’s feet and beg for his thanks, because if Lance hadn’t spotted Allura across campus, he never would have suggested they go to the bar where she performs with her band, and Shiro would never have met the guy with the too-pretty eyes who plays guitar.

How should he ask for Keith’s attention? Call him by name? Was it right to be so personal after only meeting the night before? Was something like “Hey you” cool or uncool? Would it be rude to just shove the paper at Keith and hope he opened up first? Personal or impersonal…what was the damn etiquette here?

Shiro hadn’t been able to make up his mind by the time Keith walked past, and so he settled for blurting out whatever he could to call Keith’s attention.

“You did good.”

Nailed it, Shiro thought humourlessly.
