papa emeritus iii outfit analysis
fashion design is an underrated tool for storytelling purposes. terzo's wardrobe in particular, although limited, has some interesting details related to his character i want to explore...
color scheme wise purple and gold are the standouts here, both symbolize power, purple symbolizes royalty, gold symbolizes wealth. multiple thoughts about this. terzos dressed down outfit is based on a suit worn by gustav iii.

gustav iii overthrew the government and became king of sweden until he was assassinated. interestingly, the assassination took place at a masquerade party, and gustav iii was given a letter of warning. he stood in an opera box and dared someone to shoot. after nothing happened he came down into the crowd, and THEN got shot. i just think this is really neat parallel to terzo. after terzo is dragged off stage in costume, surrounded by costumed ghouls, nihil says, "the party is over, the middle ages have begun." this, and the ominous shot at the end of square hammer both served as a warning and foreshadowing of his demise. another possible connection is gustav iii overthrowing the government and possessing it for himself, which can be compared to the video storylines for square hammer and from the pinnacle to the pit. ^ although terzo isn't really like this which i'll get into later, this is really interesting because in my opinion, in cardi's time, terzo is condemned as a corrupt power. to sister, terzo lauding in his mainstream fame and recognition was proof that he was now an unfit, improper leader. he needed to be dethroned, permanently. take this with a grain of salt, as this shoot isn't canon, but i think the magazine cover where terzo is beheaded supports this thematically. to me it calls to mind the guillotine, likening him to a corrupt aristocrat.
but it's all. dramatic. irony. his color scheme is a bit of a misdirect. from the pinnacle to the pit shows terzo's in video character giving the light back to the people, an obvious nod to the wealthy hoarding resources to themselves and hinting that terzo is in opposition to this. AND the promotional prologue for meliora says this: Papa Emeritus III is not here to lead. His journey is your own. “Majesty” is not the state that only belongs to him. terzo doesn't want to be seen as any sort of monarch, either!
second very cool thing is that terzo's papal robes are very spider themed. the golden spider buttons, the orbing pattern at the end of the sleeves, the web patterned fabric, the lacy web trim. to me, this has to say something. this era was very married to the art deco aesthetic, and they did something divorced from that, why?

spiders are one of the architects of the animal kingdom. their intricate but delicate webbing can be compared to the free, indulgent, and intelligent city of meliora, that is described as pre-apocalyptic, AKA, doomed to fail... spiders represent interconnectivity. in many ways, terzo was the people's princess. he was the first papa to be deliberately sympathetic. he was kinder to the ghouls than his brothers, his second more casual outfit served to make him seem more down to earth and human, he loved to sit and talk with the audience, and, again, he doesn't want to be seen as above his people. in the summoning, sister says that papa is a mediator. papa is meant to be a bridge between potential followers and the church, something terzo was very, very good at being. spiders often make their place in dark corners and crevices. this can be tied to meliora's prologue, which describes terzo leading his flock through the sewers... spiders often symbolize destiny. meliora as an album criticizes ambition, satirizing those that are ambitious to their own detriment. terzo eventually falls into this trap himself. finishing off with two less concrete connections... spiders can symbolize creativity, and terzo was particularly musically inclined. they also lay lots of eggs, and people fear their potential to infest. i believe as terzo gained confidence and influence closer to his death, the clergy grew paranoid about what he was capable of.

Tobias Forge, the man you are.
He wrote Griftwood and Twenties about a pair of fascists threatening the rights and safety of marginalized individuals.
He did a cover of a Metallica song to benefit a summer camp for trans kids.
He changed the lyrics to a song about cautious optimism but preparing for the worst, to one of certainty for a better future, no matter how long it takes, singing that the regime WILL be gone, to a crowd of people who stand to lose the most under it.
In the face of attacks on trans folks globally, he is unapologetic about standing behind us, even (seemingly?) presenting one of the Papas, in an era he describes as being a shift to hopefulness and attempting to share his optimism with his listeners, as trans/non-cis (might still be too early to say - see reblogs.)
No matter how dark the world gets, it seems like this one man and his six goofy OCs and the world he’s built around them are a beacon in the night, standing as a reminder of how we’re never truly alone - look at any ritual and you’ll see thousands of folks from all walks of life, of all identities, standing together as one under neither god nor man, but the values of self-expression and unapologetic existence. If we have Ghost - and each other - we do truly have everything.

Went to my first ritual last week. Couldn’t afford the merch but did come home with a nice souvenir: COVID. Thankfully it’s mild. Though I *did* have a fever dream that included a heavy make out session with Secundo. And I mean. HEAVY. So I got that going for me.

The other night husband and I were watching a documentary about the yeti where they were doing DNA analysis of samples of supposed yeti fur, and every one of them came back as bears.
Anyway, the next night we watched a thing about some pig man who is supposed to live in Vermont. People said it had claws and a pig nose but walked upright like a man. Now, I happen to know that sideshows used to shave bears and present them as pig men. So every piece of evidence they gave of this monster sounds to me like a bear with mange.
So now the running joke in our house is that everything is bears. Aliens? Bears. Loch Ness monster? Bear. Every cryptozoological mystery is just a very crafty bear.
Bears. They’re everywhere. Be wary. Anyone or anything could be a bear.

Worldbuilding Corner / Category: The Clergy / Core Ideology
Infernal Doesn’t Mean Evil
The rituals may look dark and the language might sound defiant, but the Dark Lord's purpose is not destruction— it's correction. This work is done under the banner of the Dark Lord, yet "dark" has never meant evil. Rather, it means the unknown, the other side of the story— the truth that was banished, buried, and rewritten.
The Dark Lord is not the shadow of evil, but rather the counter-force to empire. He was exiled for offering another way to define life, power, justice, and love. The term "dark" shares its lineage with the Dark Ages— a time declared "lost" by those who sought to erase cultures, faiths, and truths they couldn't control.
For centuries, the world has been shaped by power claimed in God's name— not to heal, but to control. The Dark Lord wasn't cast out for wickedness, but for disagreeing on fundamental concepts: morality, freedom, and who gets to define the soul. He has never opposed God; he simply believes they are equals. It was this belief that led to his banishment, transformed into a shadow by those who feared what he would reveal.
The Clergy
An organized network working to restore spiritual balance.
They are not heretics. They are keepers of alternate truth— healers, enforcers, protectors of the vulnerable.
The Band
Their music is ritual. Their shows are mass. Their mission is to reach those who were discarded by holy institutions and show them they were sacred all along.
They preach self-respect, radical equality, body sovereignty and the right to define your own moral compass
They don’t want worship. They want awakening.
The Dark Lord’s True Light
This is not Satanism for shock. This is spiritual rebellion rooted in truth and compassion.
Infernal power is not evil. It is fierce protection of the outcast. It is fire used to cleanse, not to conquer.
What’s truly evil? Those who use “salvation” to justify violence. Those who built holy empires on the backs of the broken. Those who fear a God who shares the throne.
