I have been a David So fan now for more than 13 years now. I was first exposed to his comedic work by JustKiddingFilms back in 2007. I was surprised to see David in a movie like Gook but the role of Daniel was tailored for him. In and out the movie David acts like a child that curses every 5 second lol. I recommend watching his youtube skits. The nike one is my favourite.

Daniel and Kamila are my two most favourite character in their movie. This is because unlike rest of the characters both Daniel and Kamila are ready to mom on from past tragedy. There friendship brought some color figuratively to the monotone black and white film .Kamila would hang out most of the movie with Daniel at their his store. Explaining her presence in the store to customers, Daniel says, “She’s adopted.”

The movie Gook is set during the Rodney King trial. King was beaten mercilessly by a group of cops and recorded secretly. Wide spread protest erupted after the acquittal of the accused police officers. Korean business were targeted in the riot. The Koreans arms themselves to protect their stores.

“Gook” is an derogatory term for an Asian immigrant. The term is directed especially at individuals of Philippine, Korean, or Vietnamese descent. In the movie the brothers are korean. In the movie the brothers were referred by the term because the black and Hispanic communities believed Koreans should not allowed in to their communities with their high priced stores

Celia and Minny’s friendship has to be the silver lining of the movie. Both of the women were oppressed in their own ways. Hilly was in an abusive relationship. She could not change jobs because the lack of job security and continuously had to deal with her racist employer . Celia is married to Hilly’s ex-fiance so she was ostracized from the women groups headed by Hilly. This cause Celia emotional distress even leading to a miscarriage. At the end of the movie Celia husband finds out about Minny and offers her a full time job and credits her for saving Celia’s life. This allowed Minny to leave her abusive husband with her children. ( The Help)

Skeeter mother’s Charlotte Phelan influenced her desire to write the journals after she fired their Bates. Bates was the Phelan family 80 year old African American maid. She took care of and nursed Skeeter throughout her childhood. She was like a mother to Skeeter. We learn from the movie that Charlotte is fighting care and I think she fired Bates because she feels guilty that Bates had been more of a mother to Skeeter than she has ever been. ( The Help)

Both the main characters, Chiron and Jonah have a complicated relationship with their mothers. Chiron was rejected for his sexuality at an early age while Jonah was exposed by his mother in front of his family. In the US a high number of lgbtq children and teenages are rejected by thier parents. Every year 1.6m teens become homeless. 40% of them are lgbtq ( We the animal/ Moonlight)
