Final: Favorite and Least Favorite Upcoming Technologies

My favorite tech that we discussed has got to be the expansion of Virtual Reality into the mainstream through services like VRChat. VRChat allows you to create your own avatar and talk and emote using these wii-remote like devices. I think this could be the future of business, meeting in these virtual rooms and conducting meetings or transactions. I also think the education sector has a lot of opportunity here; we sort of saw this with our minecraft experiences how easy and fun it is to meet and learn in a virtual world. The only hiccup I could see is that the remotes can be expensive and clunky to use for beginners.

My least favorite social media technology we discussed is deepfakes. Although initially it seemed interesting and cool, I think the possibility for disasters and misinformation is too high. Essentially, you are able to collect photos and implant a different face onto someone in a moving video. This problem, I fear, will be exacerbated in the coming election cycle and you could see actual “fake news” spreading where people saying or doing something that didn’t actually happen. I think this technology has a way bigger downside than benefits and I worry about a future where people will have to defend themselves from doctored, incriminating footage that wasn’t actually them. I think deepfakes could negatively impact our justice and political system in the near future and there should be legislation restricting or criminalizing its use in a harmful way.

Technology Mashup: OnStar

OnStar is a technology that is fairly old but I just learned of it and it benefited someone close to me greatly during this past week. It combines GPS technology with the tech infused in your mirror and dashboard of your car; if you push the button you are connected on a call with a dispatcher who can send various emergency or towing services to help you. Last week, my friend’s car was hit and actually flipped and he lost his phone. He was able to click the button and they sent an ambulance and police officer to help him get medical treatment and fill out a report. This mashup is really convenient and I imagine it has helped save lives and made the lives of service men and women easier as they know exactly where you are and what you need help with.

Reddit Upvote and Downvotes with Links

For my upvotes, I stuck to things that genuinely make me happy. It wasn’t hard to find and I am really enjoying how much of my feed is stuff that I like. There is an awesome new movie coming out called 1917 with Shawn Mendes and I love historical fiction. There was a lot of cute dog and cat pictures which I can’t get enough of as well. I also upvoted some funny pictures as well, but only the ones where I actually audibly chuckled. 

As for my downvotes, I knew where to go to find stuff that I didn’t like: the video game subreddits that I play. I mostly play Total War games and Overwatch, both of which are full of either people who play too much complaining or inexperienced people demanding changes. It was really frustrating to see all of the negativity posted on really great games.

Twitter Tools: Mentionmapp

Mentionmapp is an application that incorporates twitter that allows for further information about who you talk to and what their shared interests are as well. This is perfect for someone who is new to Twitter and hoping to find more people and a bigger community of like-minded people. Mentionmapp states that they are able to identify the main conversation talking points for any given topic. For me, I’m very interested in the current Democratic debates so using Mentionmapp it then pointed me to political commentators whose tweets provided more insight on the debates. Essentially, it is able to determine who is carrying the conversation in the topics you’re interested in. Another key feature that I absolutely love is that it can determine fake profiles, in the coming elections I do not want to be getting information from a bot or fake profile. I would definitely recommend this to all my friends as fake profiles are very numerous and misleading sometimes, also it would be nice if everyone was more streamlined and able to find key influencers quicker.

Working with Minecraft & Links to All Group Google Pages (Docs, Sheets, Slides)

My time with minecraft was very nostalgic and refreshing. I grew up playing minecraft in High School with my friends and it brought back a lot of fun memories of just hanging out with friends online. In terms of my expectations, it was exactly how I remembered it: very relaxing and a great way to destress. Due to my previous experiences, minecraft was easy. I liken it to riding a bike, once you’ve done it once you can easily pick it up and do it again without any practice in the interim. I think the main reason for its popularity is that it is so simple yet it touches on the basic dopamine release you get from building and completing something that it is creative and your own. I think the popularity directly coincides with how much fun it is to be social and creative at the same time.
