Lessons from Handwriting the Bhagavad Gita: A Journey of Self-Discipline and Growth
In November 2024, I had the opportunity to visit Udupi and receive darshan from one of the greatest coaches in the world, followed by a profound meeting with His Holiness Sri Sri Sri Sugunendra Theertha Swamiji. It was during this visit that I first learned about the “Koti Gita Lekhana Yajna”—an initiative inspiring people to handwrite the Bhagavad Gita in different Indian languages.
At first, the idea felt daunting. Writing all 18 chapters by hand? It seemed like a huge commitment. Still, something inside me nudged me to take it on—not as a task, but as a personal challenge.
The beginning was slow and awkward. I couldn’t even remember the last time I had written so much by hand. But I started dedicating just 15 to 20 minutes a day, slowly getting into a rhythm by writing around 8 to 10 shlokas daily. Eventually, last week, I completed the entire Gita in my own handwriting.
Key Lessons from the Experience
The Power of Consistency Simply showing up each day—regardless of how I felt—made all the difference. Those small, steady efforts built real momentum.
Patience and Inner Strength There were difficult days when I wanted to quit, but staying committed helped me realize our capacity to persevere, even when it’s hard.
Life Mirrors This Process Whether it’s pursuing fitness, learning a skill, or leading teams—these same principles apply. With consistency, patience, and discipline, we achieve outcomes we once thought were out of reach.
This journey wasn’t about finishing a task—it was a reflection of what’s possible when we stay with something, no matter how small our efforts may seem.
